Back in those days, most country stars were just like regular folks. Emmyou Harris was very pretty, so was Tammy Wynette, and Dottie West, but they didn't look like these women of country today, who look like they just stepped out of a Victoria's Secret ad or something. These old country stars were real people. Real talent. I'll take them over Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, or even Carrie Underwood.
You know, she's really tired in this performance. The album cut is better. Also, sometimes you end up favoring the first version that you hear of a song, just because it's the first you get attached to. Hers was the first I became attached to. Did you know it was her mother's very favorite?
@MyAngelMamaMine Your exactly right, first impressions are everything. I have never heard her do a "bad" presentation of this song, but I am so fond of her version of it with "The Hot Band", Rodney Crowell on her right hand side backing her beautifully and the string work was awesome. I taped it on my I-phone because everytime it gets to 10,000 or so views the record lable jerks it back off youtube. I have heard her say it was her mom's favorite song of all she sang. How satisfying that :-)

"This woman" is a class act....always was, still is and because she did this song so well it became a signature piece of hers.
How can anyone ever say anything bad about EmmyLou?

His? Do you mean "Earl Montgomery's" by any chance?
From Earl's comments, it seems he thinks Emmylou owns it.
Let's don't be petty. ("This woman" indeed!)
