  • How wonderful song! I haven't thought about learning Icelandic songs, but after that I must! Although, the most problem is the Icelandic pronunciation :,(

I really don't know how to pronounce some sound in that language... I find the Swedish-Norwegian-Finnish pronunciation simpler, I haven't got any problem with them for now, but Icelandic? Could anyone give me a hand with that?

  • why translate to english when you can just learn icelandic

  • awesome.

    I must learn Icelandic :)

  • Berþóra was great. She died far too soon :(

  • very nice sound. Even if I can't understand a word..

  • Her parents lived in my town

    Good people.

  • what a voice, and delightful on the guitar. Glad to have come across this.

  • thank you / takk

  • Great video! I love the icelandic language and her voice. I gotta get this translated :) Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you Birgitta! Your mother was great!

  • im israeli. an its still sounds nice althou i cant understand a word

  • Haha, i have the same problem. But it does sound very nice :D

  • Wow, I took the time an got the lyrics translated.

I loved this song even before I understood the meanings of the words. But now... It's just .. Wow. I love it! :)

  • it is a fantastic poem - by one of Iceland´s greatest poets: Steinn Steinarr - i hope some day someone will translate his body of work to english.

  • Could you please publish the translation that you've got? this song is very interesting

Did Bergþóra Árnadóttir do any other recording? I've found very little about her in the web.

    thank you

  • thank you all for your comments

from the daughter of Bergþóra who passed away a couple of years ago - it is so great to see how many have taken the time to experience her music:)

  • beautiful !

words are from the bottom of her mind

  • Nice video nice song :)

  • massaaa

  • Flott!

  • Icelandic and Norwegian were the same language once but Norwegian change so they can't really read old stories as well as we Icelanders =)

  • I like a lot!

  • icelandic, norwegian, danish and swedish are related east germanic languages. Settlers of iceland were isolated for centuries and thus retained a lot of the vocabulary and grammar of old Norse.

In a similar manner, Spanish Portuguese ,Catalan and Italian etc. are related romance languages having evolved from vulgate Latin...and there are many words that are mutually intelligible.

  • Not to be a know-it-all, but none of the languages you mentioned are East Germanic. They're in fact North Germanic. The only East Germanic language ever recorded is Gothic.

  • Luffarantastarn.....thanks for the correction. I guess what i was trying to get at is that icelandic is related to norwegian and swedish and danish. Actually Faroese is quite close to icelandic and may be mutually intelligible. I read norwegian and can read danish and swedish without much difficulty. Likewise since i also read Dutch, i can understand afrikaans quite easily.

  • Nice song, and so magnetic Icelandic language!

  • Icelandic is like a swedish language becose I understand this...

  • Liar, I'm from Sweden.

Icelandic is nearly nothing like Swedish.

  • May be something Icelandic is in your genes!

  • Come on, you suck at English, so I suspect your Icelandic isn't anywhere near good enough to allow you to understand this song.

    Ta livet av dig.

  • Very nice I love this song!!

  • Bergþóra er alltaf meiriháttar góð. Frábær tónlistamaður.

  • Þetta er alveg æði lag!!

Does anyone have the chords for this?

  • fyrsta verk minningarsjóðs Bergþóru mun verða að láta setja öll lögin hennar á nótur svo sem flestir geti spilað þau:) ég á von á því að það verði áður en árið er úti. Þau munu verða aðgengileg í tónverkamiðstöðinni og víðar.

  • amazing video and music. I love the norse culture and languages. Salute from Brazil.

  • but this is icelandic

  • icelandic is a norse language you mixed it with norwegian:) TTrmmetal wrote correctly:)

  • anyway, it's icelandic xD

  • yeah so what, YYrmetal said "he/she nurses culture and languages" thats quite universal? are you saying that people from brazil cant like other languages than their own?

  • ehm...no, i didn't say that...i clarified that this song is icelandic, and norse it's quite different...anyway, i'm italian and i love other languages, especially from north, so i can't say that people from brazil can't like other languages...that's all.

  • perhaps ttmetal was referring to nordic culture - that means all of the nordic countries - not norwegian :) i think i know what he/she means. nordic stuff... including dansish, swedish, norwegian and icelandic... i love south american culture...:)

  • Awesome song, and a tongue-breaking language :D. I am trying to sing it along, but it's close to impossible at this tempo, lol :S

    Anyway, 5 stars of course.

  • thank you for your kind words... keep practising:)

  • Thank you very much for the lyrics and the explanation, Birgitta!

  • you can find it in the section : about the video:)

  • Thank you =) =). I love this song. <3!

  • I am sorry but i can´t find a translation of this poem

it is an ironic epitaph about a working class man who had passed away. Here is a rough translation of the first few lines:)

You were broke and poorly dress man

with giant feet and sad hands

You didn't have any weight in national affairs as is

and no one really knew why you bothered to be born

  • And do you know where i can find the icelandic original text?? ^^

  • Are there lyrics out there? My Icelandic is too bad to hear them correctly.. :(. Lyrics would be the greatest thing =A

  • I adore her and this wonderful language!!!

  • thank you - this poem is among the best poems written in icelandic. i will try to look it up and post it here - there might be an english translation available ...

  • Oh thank you, it will be great if you post the lyrics! I wish I could understand what she sings about in the song. Sounds very beautiful.

  • wow this great...even thou i cannot understand the lyrics they seem peaceful....thanks for the beauty....

  • Bra sjungen.

  • Þetta er frábært lag, það er sko í miklu uppáhaldi hjá mér...
