Great video man !!! and thanks alot for clearing up my confusion about the ammunition. I was confused about the difference in the rounds.... this simple comparison made sense .
Can I possibly mount a bi-pod to it for improved stability I have a problem with keeping it steady it's either my technique or I can't get the breathing/heartbeat timing down
i've been using a marlin 30-30 with 150 grain rounds since 1996 and have gotten 17 deer with it. 5 bucks and 12 doe. they are wonderful guns from 125 yards and less. very accurate, light weight, reliable as a rock, easy to clean, just a great all around gun with good power for deer. i'm in southern PA.
Outstanding review. Thank you for posting. I'm trying to decide between this rifle and the Browning BLR. The BLR is a great rifle, but I'm leaning towards the Marlin - mainly because it's half the price!
I'm mainly interested in North Carolina deer hunting
@nialljamesbuckley Buy the Marlin - it's a nice rifle and will get the job done with deer. Plus, I'd hate to take an expensive rifle into the woods. You know it's going to get beat up over time.
@nashi55 - you mentioned a few times that it's a smaller gun - good for a lady or a youngster - do you think that's just a perk or do you think an adult would be better off with a larger weapon? My wife has no interest in shooting and my kids aren't quite old enough yet. this will be my first rifle - i've only ever hunted with a shotgun - small game and birds.
@nialljamesbuckley No expert here, but I'd say it's a benefit. Just think of carrying it all day in the woods. A 7lb Marlin vs a 10lb rifle would just be an easier day too me. You can carry more gear or food, or just carry less weight all day! The size and weight are better for a youngster/smaller shooter, but can be a perk to an regular sized adult as well.
i have a 336c as well. in .30-30. great gun, i love it. very rugged, but powerful at close range, easy to carry, reliable, affordable. Love it. I definitely prefer it to the winchester by far. Great for general shooting, or for serious deer hunting. Easy to use. Surprisingly accurate too. Basic rifle, great for an entry level rifle.
@deadleppards76 I compared them back to back years ago and the Marlin was far better too me. Marlin was tight & solid and the Win 30-30 was loose - as though it wasn't put together well. I know Win has a great reputation for 30-30s but Marlin won this one easily too me. I've owned a Win shotgun for over 25 yrs, so I'm not anit-Winchester.
My dad just bough this gun, when we took it out it was shooting high and to the right. We weren't able to zero the sights only way we were hitting our targets was by holding under and to the left. The manual mentions how to use the rear sight but not the front, just want to see if you have any input thanks.

30 30 and both are great guns but i would rather have the marlin cause it is more solid the the winchester but anyway great vid
i was watching the rest of your vid and u talked about how it an issue to mount a scope on the top eject winchester it not really an issue at all mine came drilled an taped on the right side for a scope and it does great for where the scopes at but i do agree on marlin as first pick thz

@themattlyone The 30 30 in my experience kicks less than the 20 gauge. Although, i was shooting a very light shotgun (4 pounds) so i felt the recoil much more than the rifle.
I just received my new Marlin 336C and have one concern. After cleaning and lubricating the rifle, I tried loading with a few rounds. >50% of the time the rounds won't load properly. I have to turn the rifle sideways or even upside down to jiggle the round so it can be aligned with the barrel beofor I could squeeze the lever close for fireing. I have fired 1894 (44 mag) and it had no problems loading. This is my first rile; is this loading problem common or possibly defective?
@Hoppergrasss I have a 336C also. I haven't had a chance to fire it in about a year. But I do remember with mine the rounds didn't want to load if the rifle was sideways.
Thanks for the reply. I called Marlin and I was told that I should send my new rifle to a Marlin designated gun smith for repair. It may need to be adjusted. I tried 2 different brands of ammo, including Winchester factory ammo, but it still would not load properly or smoothly without. Oh well. Bad luck I guess. Hope your rifle is working fine.
@remoman I'd say safety - the hammer is down, but not resting on the firing pin. Not locked back sll the way either, so it could drop down and fire either.
killed many, many deer and elk with a 336. have lots of larger caliber bolt actions, single shot T/C, but my marlin 336 and my marlin 1895M .450 are my absolute favorites for deer, elk, bears. BEST rifle going!!!
These guns are find, why someone would really want anything more, doesn't make a lot of sense, I seen a guy shoot a Canadian Black Bear, with a 30-30, one shot, one kill.. I don't depend on guys for safety, but hunting it is fine..
my 336W (is it a W or a C what has the micro groove barrel?) does nto have a scope, and never did. it came with teh option to mount one... differnet hammer.
I enjoyed your Video a lot. I have this Rifle and it is a Joy to own. It will never kill an Animal, but I use it for home defense. Thanks for a Great Video! Joe B.
I plan to buy one of these exact models early January and was wondering: how much did yours cost out the door, after tax and all? I was planning on getting the 336W to save a bit, but I really like the slimmer and better-shaped walnut stock.
@RevolverPhantom I've had mine for several yrs so I'm sure prices have changed. Impact guns has the 336w listed for $375. Of course they are out of them..........
@nashi55 Ah, I thought since you posted the video in 2009 it was a recent purchase. I'll be getting the 336C rather than the W and it's listed at $442. So I should be able to get it for maybe under $500 OTD, I hope.
@RevolverPhantom Well it's not that long ago - got it in 2008. I was already thinking it was 2011! Seems like it was $425 at the time...... The C is the better choice than the W too me.
I have a marlin 1894 chambered in .44 magnum, and I love it. I bought it last year, and took two whitetails with it so far. Each of them went down with one shot through the heart and lungs.
@alfredazpeitia No expert, but I'd say it might be a little under powered for the longer range shots on big game. However...a lever action in 35 Remington, 338 Marlin Express, or 45-70 might be a better choice. Maybe others can say their thoughts........
@alfredazpeitia I have heard of people using the 170 grain rounds on Elk. It's just what I've heard though, I've never taken anything larger that a white tail with it
@alfredazpeitia I had a friend that took a elk with a 30-30 ,But he is a really good shot and the elk was 60 yrds away. The shot hit the animal in the heart and still managed to run a while. For big game a 308,30-06 minimum and good choices are 375,7mm mag ,35 rem. 45-70 for less than 200 yrd shots ,405 grain drops 24 inches at 200 yrds
@alfredazpeitia If you want a lever action elk gun look at a .444 Marlin, .450 Marlin or 45-70. If you need to make longer range shots look at a .30'06 or one of the .300 magnums.
7 lbs isnt very light i have a semi automatic browning in .270 that weighs around 7.5 lbs with scope probably around 8 ish pounds with a fully loaded magazien ( 4 round plus one in the chamber ) yes they are a great rifle .3030 is a good caliber to start on i went from a .22 bolt to a .410 single shot to a 12 gauge pump then a .243 then 3030, 30-06 and .444 marlin is the biggest ive shot and thats a gun you want to hold on to but great video good quality video/audio hoping to get one soon! :)
@ablemancanada Sure...but compared to about 9-10 lbs for the Garand & M1A I have it is!!! True - ARs and other riffles offer great performance for a similar weight. Glad you liked it.
@nashi55 i wasnt really refering to the AR platform rifle like sure you can get it in 223,204 ruger, 6.5 creedmor , 6.5 grendel , 6.8 rem spl , 450 bushmaster and .308 win but for hunting who wants/needs a rifle with an accesorie rail pisol prib adjustible stock and a 10-30 round magazie? my old mauser action fn built .270 bolt or 1909 model savage 99 in .3030 could do just as good inside 100 yards as there 2000$ " black rifle "
@ablemancanada Nobody does for hunting... It's just that I see them used for that more and more. Nothing wrong with a bolt action for game hunting. Part of it may be trying to impress other guys with the most exp rifle or one having all the newest gizmos.
as for home defense we dont have to worry about that over here in NZ, the only people with guns are the army and hunters, sometimes cops. no pistols readily available (you have to join a pistol club, get an extra endorsement on your firearms licence and attend the pistol club monthly, with a bloody good excuse if you miss one) but if I was put in a situation of home defense I would definately either go for my remington 870 magnum express 12ga with buckshot, or my semi automatic .22 carbine...
I have a mossberg 472 lever action 30-30 - very similar to this marlin.. I must say it is an excellent rifle for hunting, with a simple 4x32 tasco scope on it I have been able to hit deer exactly where I aimed (right through the ribs, heart & lungs - only a spoonful of damaged meat, but instant death) on many occasions out to as far as 350 yards using 170gr nosler partition federal rounds... definately a good rifle if you want to make sure the target animal goes down and stays down.
I am torn between buying a 1911 pistol or a lever action for my next firearms acquisition. The Marlin seems like the perfect choice. I love the 30-30 cartridge. Thanks for the informative video.
@jigglejack100 I'm no expert, but based on what I have read the 30-30's max effective range is 200-300 yrds. You'd need a 308 or 30-06 to reach out to 500 or more.
i love this gun. the 30-30 is the number one most used gun, in america. If you count all the animals killed from the 1890's and up this gun has dropped everything... This gun has killed everything but probably an elephant.
BUT BECAREFUL BUYING A 30-30, u don't wanna accidentally get a .35
i have a marlin glenfield 30a and i believe that its from 1979. pretty much the same critter as the 336, but sold by sears on a budget. i took my first deer with it, and i must say this its the best-shooting deer rifle we have. with a 4x fixed scope, it is deadly. cant wait for the upcoming deer season
Enjoyed your video, I am thinking about getting a 30-30. My comment was about you saying that the 30-30 would be a good choice for home defense. I would have to disagree as that is a LOT of wall penetrating power for most homes to be fired in, as it would easily go through a wall and in to another room, or perhaps even in to the next house. I have a Tarus Judge for that reason or would use a 12 gauge for that reason, not to mention the larger pattern is going to give you better point and shoot.
@johnnyd1972 Glad you liked it. Agreed, not the best choice for HD. For guys that want a rifle and a military style one isn't allowed in their area, this will be fine. Some may want a Mini-14, AR, or similar. The Marlin won't attract attention but will perform well.
True it will go through walls..so will 223, buckshot, slugs & other rds. The best to me is 6 or 8 birdshot in a shotgun. You have to know what is behind you at all times. Suppose the perp is by a window at night and you miss???
@nashi55 Thats the weird thing. My Marlin is a Marlin, but a glenfield model 30, .3030 cal winchester. I think my rifle holds about 4 or 5 bullets. Look on my youtube channel under "gun collection"...or type in "hinduw gun collection" in the search bar above, you will see the marlin
@hinduw Based on my quick research...yours appears to be an older Marlin. I saw one made in 1966...so I guess the design has changed. Looks like a nice rifle!
you spoke of price being reasonable several times in the video, but never said how much you gave for yours. just curious on the average price for one. i want to compare prices with what i hear from different people. beautiful rifle by the way. i think that this rifle would be ideal for my girlfriend. i personally own the marlin 1895 cowboy chambered in 45-70 gov. love this gun and love marlin lever actions.
@MrJohnboy1911 Prices vary so much. You can check local shops or online stores plus online auction sites to see what they are selling for now. Saying what I paid almost two years ago isn't very helpful - I'm sure it's changed since then.
There are minor differences between the C and the A, but mostly the wood if my memory serves me right. The A has a walnut finish and the C is solid walnut.
@karlaschultz1 depends on what you want to use it for, 357 and 45 is just a pistol round, range is like 75 yrds, not that far. the 3030 is an overall amazing rifle, the range on the 3030 can go to 350 yards,im personally getting the marlin 336w 3030, great for hunting, shootin down range and everything else. and if you decide to get a 357 or 45,it also comes in a 44 which is a lot better in my opinion, the 45 is horrible for lever actions in my opinion tho,jus remember its still a pistol round.
@ultimatevideowatcher What's your intended use? Hunting deer? What ranges do you plan on? Want a scope mounted? Most important - what is the budget????
Deer hunting/ plinking. range, not to far, but I would like something that could keep its power at longer distances too. I will probably mount a scope but it wont be anything special. Budget, not a problem. I been saving up for a while and I am ready to spend a good ammount of money if I need too. Because I have been sticking with the .22LR and the 22-250 for a long time and recently decided to get into some bigger firepower.
@ultimatevideowatcher Then you have lots of options too me! Maybe shop around and see what's out there you like. Fisrt ones to my mind are Remington 750 30-06 semiauto or marlin lever action in 338 or 35. I beleive both are tapped for a scope.
30-30 ammo tends to be less expensive than 30-06. but 30-06 has more knock down power and a farther range. it would be dependent on the purpose that you will use it for.
@LittleMaggot50 I would say yes. Recoli isn't too bad, and with lever action he'll control the firing. No worries like a new shooter might have with a semi-auto. Smaller and lighter too.
i got a marlin xl7 .270 bolt action. very nice. only around 300 bucks. also comes in 30-06, 25-06, and .270. also for people more familiar with the short action there is a xs7 which is .308 and .243 any one looking for something that is a bit more rangey than a 30-30 that would be good.
But I have compared them side by side and the Marlin has a better feel, like it's made of one solid piece. The Winchester felt like 50 pieces slapped together. Not solid at all, as though it'll fall apart anytime.
@BaltoMovie Never owned lever action winchester...I worked at a retail stores from 1985-1992 that sold guns. I compared them then - marlin won hands down. Customers would agree too. The marlins sold for more, but worth every penny of it to me. Winchesters felt loose....as though it was put together by chimps. Decided back then that I'd buy a marlin. Mine feels as solid today, as they did back then. Yes cost cutting hurt winchester badly. My Win 20 ga shotgun feels fine though..bought it in 87.
@nashi55 the 336w sometimes comes with a scope, but also it is about $100 cheaper, it has a beach stock and a metal, not a rubber butplate, and some says it has inferior machining, but thats bull crap.
@LittleMaggot50 All of the 336Ws I've seen had the scope mounted, but it is an option I wanted solid walnut, not another wood with a walnut finish. But the W quality didn't seem lower too me...just not as nice.
I liked tthe 336C best, so based on my comparisons paying a little more for it, even without a scope, was worth it.
Nothing wrong with a W, might be the best choice for those that will use it all the time. It'll just get beat up in the woods.
this was very helpful

Has any one used the Remington Managed Recoil Rifle Cartridges. I have a bad shoulder and I am looking for a round that will not kill my shoulder.
I shot a 20 gauge with a target load and could only shoot it 6 times.
Would the recoil on a 30 30 be less than a 20 gauge shotgun.

I enjoyed your Video a lot. I have this Rifle and it is a Joy to own. It will never kill an Animal, but I use it for home defense. Thanks for a Great Video! Joe B.

@jburawski while the 30/03 and a lever gun is not ideal.........semi auto 12 guage buck shot..... it will work.
perty mutch anything going faster then 1000 FPS and hte bullet weaghting over 75 grains will put a person down.
make sure you target shoot that. they are sutch a joy to shoot!

I plan to buy one of these exact models early January and was wondering: how much did yours cost out the door, after tax and all? I was planning on getting the 336W to save a bit, but I really like the slimmer and better-shaped walnut stock.
RevolverPhantom 1 year ago
@RevolverPhantom I've had mine for several yrs so I'm sure prices have changed. Impact guns has the 336w listed for $375. Of course they are out of them..........
nashi55 1 year ago
@nashi55 Ah, I thought since you posted the video in 2009 it was a recent purchase. I'll be getting the 336C rather than the W and it's listed at $442. So I should be able to get it for maybe under $500 OTD, I hope.
RevolverPhantom 1 year ago
@RevolverPhantom Well it's not that long ago - got it in 2008. I was already thinking it was 2011! Seems like it was $425 at the time...... The C is the better choice than the W too me.

I have a marlin 1894 chambered in .44 magnum, and I love it. I bought it last year, and took two whitetails with it so far. Each of them went down with one shot through the heart and lungs.
catholicforever 1 year ago
do you think the 30-30 makes for a good Elk hunting gun? Im thinkin of purchasing a lever action myslef in the cal.
alfredazpeitia 1 year ago
@alfredazpeitia No expert, but I'd say it might be a little under powered for the longer range shots on big game. However...a lever action in 35 Remington, 338 Marlin Express, or 45-70 might be a better choice. Maybe others can say their thoughts........
nashi55 1 year ago
@alfredazpeitia I have heard of people using the 170 grain rounds on Elk. It's just what I've heard though, I've never taken anything larger that a white tail with it
daBlade80 1 year ago
@alfredazpeitia I had a friend that took a elk with a 30-30 ,But he is a really good shot and the elk was 60 yrds away. The shot hit the animal in the heart and still managed to run a while. For big game a 308,30-06 minimum and good choices are 375,7mm mag ,35 rem. 45-70 for less than 200 yrd shots ,405 grain drops 24 inches at 200 yrds
Hardcorediver44 1 year ago
@alfredazpeitia You CAN use a .30-30 170 grain on an elk, but you must get in close. The closer the better & not over 100 yards away.
xbones101 1 year ago

ablemancanada 1 year ago
@ablemancanada Sure...but compared to about 9-10 lbs for the Garand & M1A I have it is!!! True - ARs and other riffles offer great performance for a similar weight. Glad you liked it.
nashi55 1 year ago
@nashi55 i wasnt really refering to the AR platform rifle like sure you can get it in 223,204 ruger, 6.5 creedmor , 6.5 grendel , 6.8 rem spl , 450 bushmaster and .308 win but for hunting who wants/needs a rifle with an accesorie rail pisol prib adjustible stock and a 10-30 round magazie? my old mauser action fn built .270 bolt or 1909 model savage 99 in .3030 could do just as good inside 100 yards as there 2000$ " black rifle "
ablemancanada 1 year ago
@ablemancanada Nobody does for hunting... It's just that I see them used for that more and more. Nothing wrong with a bolt action for game hunting. Part of it may be trying to impress other guys with the most exp rifle or one having all the newest gizmos.

The best home defense weapon is the one that's in your hand at the time of an attack or intrusion.
srtmonk 1 year ago
as for home defense we dont have to worry about that over here in NZ, the only people with guns are the army and hunters, sometimes cops. no pistols readily available (you have to join a pistol club, get an extra endorsement on your firearms licence and attend the pistol club monthly, with a bloody good excuse if you miss one) but if I was put in a situation of home defense I would definately either go for my remington 870 magnum express 12ga with buckshot, or my semi automatic .22 carbine...
toadecks 1 year ago
@toadecks Well it's not the best for that, but would work if it was your only defense.
nashi55 1 year ago
I have a mossberg 472 lever action 30-30 - very similar to this marlin.. I must say it is an excellent rifle for hunting, with a simple 4x32 tasco scope on it I have been able to hit deer exactly where I aimed (right through the ribs, heart & lungs - only a spoonful of damaged meat, but instant death) on many occasions out to as far as 350 yards using 170gr nosler partition federal rounds... definately a good rifle if you want to make sure the target animal goes down and stays down.
toadecks 1 year ago
I am torn between buying a 1911 pistol or a lever action for my next firearms acquisition. The Marlin seems like the perfect choice. I love the 30-30 cartridge. Thanks for the informative video.

can you shoot the 30-30 at 500 yards???
jigglejack100 1 year ago
@jigglejack100 I'm no expert, but based on what I have read the 30-30's max effective range is 200-300 yrds. You'd need a 308 or 30-06 to reach out to 500 or more.

i love this gun. the 30-30 is the number one most used gun, in america. If you count all the animals killed from the 1890's and up this gun has dropped everything... This gun has killed everything but probably an elephant.
BUT BECAREFUL BUYING A 30-30, u don't wanna accidentally get a .35

i have a marlin glenfield 30a and i believe that its from 1979. pretty much the same critter as the 336, but sold by sears on a budget. i took my first deer with it, and i must say this its the best-shooting deer rifle we have. with a 4x fixed scope, it is deadly. cant wait for the upcoming deer season

onslaught5012 1 year ago
Enjoyed your video, I am thinking about getting a 30-30. My comment was about you saying that the 30-30 would be a good choice for home defense. I would have to disagree as that is a LOT of wall penetrating power for most homes to be fired in, as it would easily go through a wall and in to another room, or perhaps even in to the next house. I have a Tarus Judge for that reason or would use a 12 gauge for that reason, not to mention the larger pattern is going to give you better point and shoot.
johnnyd1972 1 year ago
@johnnyd1972 Glad you liked it. Agreed, not the best choice for HD. For guys that want a rifle and a military style one isn't allowed in their area, this will be fine. Some may want a Mini-14, AR, or similar. The Marlin won't attract attention but will perform well.
True it will go through walls..so will 223, buckshot, slugs & other rds. The best to me is 6 or 8 birdshot in a shotgun. You have to know what is behind you at all times. Suppose the perp is by a window at night and you miss???
nashi55 1 year ago
@johnnyd1972 shot gun all the way, a lot easier to point a gun in the dark, than aim it.

@hinduw Based on my quick research...yours appears to be an older Marlin. I saw one made in 1966...so I guess the design has changed. Looks like a nice rifle!

@MrJohnboy1911 Prices vary so much. You can check local shops or online stores plus online auction sites to see what they are selling for now. Saying what I paid almost two years ago isn't very helpful - I'm sure it's changed since then.

what should i get between a 357mag,45lc,ora 30-30
karlaschultz1 2 years ago
@karlaschultz1 depends on what you want to use it for, 357 and 45 is just a pistol round, range is like 75 yrds, not that far. the 3030 is an overall amazing rifle, the range on the 3030 can go to 350 yards,im personally getting the marlin 336w 3030, great for hunting, shootin down range and everything else. and if you decide to get a 357 or 45,it also comes in a 44 which is a lot better in my opinion, the 45 is horrible for lever actions in my opinion tho,jus remember its still a pistol round.

ultimatevideowatcher 2 years ago
@ultimatevideowatcher What's your intended use? Hunting deer? What ranges do you plan on? Want a scope mounted? Most important - what is the budget????
nashi55 2 years ago
Deer hunting/ plinking. range, not to far, but I would like something that could keep its power at longer distances too. I will probably mount a scope but it wont be anything special. Budget, not a problem. I been saving up for a while and I am ready to spend a good ammount of money if I need too. Because I have been sticking with the .22LR and the 22-250 for a long time and recently decided to get into some bigger firepower.
ultimatevideowatcher 2 years ago
@ultimatevideowatcher Then you have lots of options too me! Maybe shop around and see what's out there you like. Fisrt ones to my mind are Remington 750 30-06 semiauto or marlin lever action in 338 or 35. I beleive both are tapped for a scope.
nashi55 2 years ago
thanks for the info :D
ultimatevideowatcher 2 years ago
if I were you I would go with 30-30 afordable and it gets the job dont and some
StAgMaStA1 2 years ago
30-30 ammo tends to be less expensive than 30-06. but 30-06 has more knock down power and a farther range. it would be dependent on the purpose that you will use it for.

Personaly I like the Winchester 30-30 Model 94 better than the Marlin
No offense though, I just feel the Winchester is more of a evenly weighted gun and I had more luck with deer with it
BaltoMovie 2 years ago
None taken.
But I have compared them side by side and the Marlin has a better feel, like it's made of one solid piece. The Winchester felt like 50 pieces slapped together. Not solid at all, as though it'll fall apart anytime.
nashi55 2 years ago
Oh lol I know what your talking about
I'm going to guess you have a pre verison
what is the serial number and I can confirm it
see near the 1980s Winchester began to make rifles that were about 60% cheaper to make. Some of the parts were actually replaced with thin plastic!
U uses to own a pre. The lever would actually fall out of place and the hammer was always too loose.
BaltoMovie 2 years ago
@BaltoMovie Never owned lever action winchester...I worked at a retail stores from 1985-1992 that sold guns. I compared them then - marlin won hands down. Customers would agree too. The marlins sold for more, but worth every penny of it to me. Winchesters felt loose....as though it was put together by chimps. Decided back then that I'd buy a marlin. Mine feels as solid today, as they did back then. Yes cost cutting hurt winchester badly. My Win 20 ga shotgun feels fine though..bought it in 87.
nashi55 2 years ago
@nashi55 the 336w sometimes comes with a scope, but also it is about $100 cheaper, it has a beach stock and a metal, not a rubber butplate, and some says it has inferior machining, but thats bull crap.
LittleMaggot50 2 years ago
@LittleMaggot50 All of the 336Ws I've seen had the scope mounted, but it is an option I wanted solid walnut, not another wood with a walnut finish. But the W quality didn't seem lower too me...just not as nice.
I liked tthe 336C best, so based on my comparisons paying a little more for it, even without a scope, was worth it.
Nothing wrong with a W, might be the best choice for those that will use it all the time. It'll just get beat up in the woods.
