This is folk song mainly from Guangxi province that pass down from generation to generation. They usually dont write the songs down in words, they just sing sing sing and sing everyday at home, in the field,doing chores, and hanging out etc....back in the old days, that is how they mate (as in finding their lovers). One standing on one cliff while the other in another cliff and sing. Their feeling is in the song.They making them up as their feeling goes..very talented.

The natural landscape in China, here in the U.S. and in other countries were much more beautiful because we did not have so many people. With exploding population growth comes excessive consumption and development. Thus the beautiful nature like we see in this movie is gone forever! Very sad.

Everything was dubbed in those days including the dialogue, they don't have digital song, not even stereo in 1961 in this movie. Once I watched a movie been made, the actors were lipsyned, they all moved their lips and the studio work will do the rest.

The actress isn't actually singing... the songs were dubbed in after the show was shot. I forgot who the actual singer was though.

yes,the movie Liu San Jie came 1st. It was banned in certain countries because it was singing against the landlords. Kind of poor against the rich. it was a good movie and HongKong copied some of its rymes to its movie "San Ker Lian" & later "san ker yin yuan"

I brought this VCD back from China with me. Such beautiful scenery. Such wonderful singing. I can watch this opening scene for hours on end. I wish I could go to Guangxi now.

This is such a departure from the overtly political movies of the early 60's. I believe it is one of China's first musicals.

This movie was quite similar with the movie in 1960's named " Shan Ge Lian`" which played

by Guan Shan (Hongkong star Guan ZhiLin's Dad)and Yueh Feng.I don't know which one came

first,but I never heard of this movie till now ,thanks for sharing so classic movie!

This movie comes first at 1960. and shaw brothers' movies comes at at 1964. Actually, so called the huamei movie of love eterne are also follow the mailand movie. 'tian xian pei.

I love the story of Liu San Jie. There are many s tributes to her in Liuzhou and Guilin China. Today Guilin is a tourist city. What's great is this move was shot in the Guilin, so you can see what it was like 50 years ago.

i love this movie..simply because i admire her strength and sense of righteousness. A rare movie depicting a strong female lead...especially in the male dominated society at that time ( 1961)

@bigpigmouth: This is amovie, so you can buy the dvd if you are very interested. I don't imagine it's very easy to find outside of China, but in the area around Yangshuo it is almost impossible to escape. The movie has subtitles.
