She should learn the newly arranged Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #5 (arranged by Alexander Warenberg, based on Rach's Symphony #2) -- it soooooooo beautiful!!!!
It is quite obvious now that her performing career has hit a dead-end of sorts. Very sluggish - almost stagnant - ang career niya ngayon, and nobody can deny that. Nakalimutan na nga ba siya ng publiko? Is her management agency to blame? Or is it she herself the problem?
Got an axe to grind you moron? Dead end of sorts? What kind of low quality crack did you buy and use when you wrote this? You are plainly wrong because I for one can deny that her career is NOT dead-end, just like the very few remaining brain cells in that small head of yours. If you are trying to advocate another artist, do not put down Miss Licad because that simply will not help your agenda.
@SamuelConcepcion OK. I will if that's what you really want. But first of, you tell me EXACTLY what evidence qualifies for laos, and please define, not loosely, but very specifically in exact terms what is considered laos. You labeled her laos so tell me what that means in your book. I apologize if I called you names. That was wrong and I simply over-reacted to what you said, to which I disagree passionately, because she simply is NOT laos.
@rayinexile Any idiot knows what "laos" means. Use the standard definition. BTW you sound like a kid who is just beginning to speak/write English. Your English sounds awkward.
Why are you trying to put words in my finger tips?
The New Yorker dubbed her as the "pianist's pianist". If she is not that frequently featured performer, maybe the prospective audience are racist like you or that they choose overly animated antics of you know who.
I can praise an artist lengthily but if I don't like him/her, a word or a sentence would be enough. In Cecile, there are a lot others who like her artistic rendition unlike you FATSO, you should respect other people's feelings.
NellyBoogan Look, if you want to worship the classical pianist version of Liberace, it's your prerogative. No amount of convincing on my part will break the spell he has on you. If this makes you happy, good for you. An artist is an artist whether his/her work is on display in a dark corner of a broken down studio or on a pedestal in the Louvre. Justify Lang Lang's shortcomings any way you want to. One day, you too will realize "the emperor wears no clothes." You're obviously not a pianist.
@bulisabahay57 Same goes for me: if you want to deny the fact that Lang Lang's performing career is so much more active and successful than CL's, then no amount of convincing on my part will break the spell she has on you. If it makes you happy, good for you. But you seem to have admitted that CL's works sit in a dark corner of a rundowm studio and Lang Lang's are on display in the Louvre. I just won this argument..... QED

Miss Licad won the Gold Medal of the Levintritt Foundation in 1981, which had not awarded the prize for 10 years. The Leventritt award was sparingly given, and there was no award presented if the judges felt the required standard was not achieved. Among the judges was Istzak Perlman. Mr. Lang Lang has yet to achieve this lofty standard, let alone last thirty years. Let's see where his career is after thirty years.
@bulisabahay57 Well, let me ask the "reverse" question: Lang Lang is 28 years old now; when Cecile was 28, had she attained the level of success that Lang Lang had so far? For ex., playing at the White House, Olympics, Grammy nominations & awards, 30+ CD records some of them golden/platinum, performance with Berlin PO and Vienna PO, many magazine covers, Adidas endorsement, several TV documentaries about him, youtube concert, etc., etc. (even though I believe CL is a better musician).
Lang Lang's Buffalo concert was a complete hit, and the audience could not get enough of him, standing ovations and all. Now I know why Lang Lang is considered a mega star in classical music - he definitely has charisma and knows how to titillate the audience with body language. I guess musicality is not enough for concert performers these days - they should also have charisma in order to be successful, at least commercially. This is what Lang Lang has that Licad has not enough of.
I just saw Lang Lang play this piano concerto with the Buffalo Phil. today (7-10-11) at Kleinhaus Symphony Hall. He played it very, very fast, I think it was all over after less than 30 minutes. Licad's playing here is more mature and her sound is more sonorous. Lang Lang's playing was mostly about speed. He did try to "paint" some color, but the result sounded immature and childish. But then, Lang Lang had a lot of charisma and a very magnetic personality that the audience could not resist.
@classical always,ahem...Miss Licad performed Rach. 2 with the the Seattle Sympony in Sept. 2007 for four nights. IT WAS STANDING ROOM ONLY. ALL FOUR NIGHTS. Bronfman couldn't repeat this feat in Seattle. This was what the Times critic had to say of Volodos. "For all the ear-boggling bedazzlement of Volodos' playing, however, you're left with the nagging sensation that the interpretive depth isn't always there." Your shallowness in understanding of music is betrayed.

What I noticed and I disliked is that she plays the part from 1.50 ca. to 2.50 ca. very slowly and less "legato" but a lot "staccato" than most of pianists used to do.
Anyway, everyone can understand that this is a choice you can't share but it's obvious that we are facing a great pianist with an impressive tecnique.
I read lots of comments. I loved her starting then I don't like particularly the way she continues to play this first movement. Anyway, no point that Cecile Licad got an impressive tecnique and dominates completely the instrument.
No doubt tha she's one of best pianists. You can see other videos of her here on the Tube and you'll see really an amazing pianist.
I've read that her recent performance in Moscow was "awesome" but it was written by a Filipino journalist (probably her close friend) based in the Philippines, not in Moscow. I have searched but have not found any review articles about it - if it was indeed "awesome", there should be news articles raving about it -- at least in Moscow daily newspapers. But there is nothing. For example, how many standing ovations did she get? What was/were her encore(s)? Did she get another invitation? Etc.
@MadamePukengkay Did you read the english edition of one of the papers in Moscow the following day? Forgive me, prpbably, you were looking only in Russian dailies..
Another point, why does everyone only have to be watching just the very top pianist's ?
Surely if we enjoy Music there is time to listen to all levels on youtube. There are disabled players, youngsters etc all doing their best at various levels of skill. Many good unknowns on youtube really appreciate it when you give them an encouraging comment . One who I like very much is MORINOROBA. She is a young Japanese lady who plays the piano wonderfully and is also a fine artistic person.
@lovemetu People can enjoy whatever they like and should do so. But if you read the posts here, several said this was a great performance or even the best one, which Licad is hardly. Who said great and having a name mean anything? One of the best Tchaikovsky's is Freire's that 98% of people have never heard. One of the worst is Pogorelic, who is hardly the top pianist his fans at one time thought he was. But if people are going to write about great or "the best," it should be that.
Well again your point of comparing artist's. Two of my friends are professional pianist's and both of them favour Van Cliburns version of the Tchaikovsky piano concerto as I do myself and yes I have listened to the artists that you mention playing it. All wonderful pianist's though, its just down to personal taste.
As you say, they all have their day, some have long careers, some dont, family pressures, injury problems, motivation, mental problems etc so lets just enjoy them all while we can.
@lovemetu You do not mention who your friends that are professional pianists are and in fact, there are more than a thousand all over the world. Russian pianists commonly prefer Cliburn because at that time, Cliburn's visit to Russia was a historic event. It is personal taste at a certain level - and yes, Cliburn can be compared with top performances. However, the discussion on this page is Licad, and her performance is just mediocre compared to the many pianists who have recorded the piece.
let me remind you that both horowitz and argerich also had their own detractors. horowitz at first was criticized for being just loudest and fastest and argerich had the reputation for being just fast straight and dry.
If you consider Cecile Licad's performance so mediocre, then why did you even bother to visit this video in the first place ? You seem to be a very self opinionated person in your views in the way that you dismiss the talents of the various famous pianoist's who have played this piece, so perhaps if you know so much ,then you should be on youtube playing it yourself ?
I for one am very happy to be able to hear Cecile Licads playing her version of the Tchaikovsky piano concerto.
I think people should be a bit more thankful that we are able to watch and listen to all these wonderful artists on youtube. Years ago people would have had to pay a lot of money to travel and see what we now get all for free, perhaps we should all try to be a bit more grateful for what we have nowadays, the choice to watch and listen to so much free entertainment.
@classicalalways Cecil plays in various concerts around the world. If she plays mediocre, according to you, you pompous ass, then why is she chosen to perform then? Are those people tone deaf and only you can judge music according to your own pompous standards. Or you just saw that Ms Licad is not white and therefore inferior, you idiot.
@jurbinsky77 You can be as insulting as you like and as wrong as you want. You clearly show your lack of knowledge between a pianist with a thriving solo career versus a pianist who no longer has as much of one. For example, Licad once played some of the kind of concerts that Helene Grimaud plays now - with the elite orchestras. If you know Ms. Licad's career well, you would know that she does not play with orchestras like Chicago very much at all - and this has been for years.
tell me sir, why should we believe you over the thousands others who think licad is one of the best? who are you to be more "knowledgeable" than all others?
@libettaThousands of others who think Licad is one of the best? You think Licad is "high in demand" or generally considered "one of the best?" If you want to believe Licad is one of the best, you have that right, even if they do not know much about what makes a pianist great. Who am I? I am one of the thousands who believe that Sokolov, Kissin, Volodos, Bronfman and several other pianists today are "one of the best" & Licad is not. Licad is not like Yundi Li, Lang Lang, Yuja Wang either..
gee sir, your ego is way over the roof. i have nothing against any of those pianists you mentioned, apart from kissin maybe, who has a harsh, heavy sound. the fact that you mentioned them doesn't take away anything from Licad. you don't have any right to make us believe Licad is not one of the best. i have asked many pianists and have heard many good reviews about her, certainly nothing like a comment from an asshole such as yourself
@libetta By the way, Libetta is certainly one of the greatest pianists - outside of his outstanding technique, check out his Beethovem and Mozart sometime.
@classicalalways ..ahem...Miss Licad performed Rach. 2 with the the Seattle Sympony in Sept. 2007 for four nights. IT WAS STANDING ROOM ONLY. ALL FOUR NIGHTS. @jurbinsky77 Incredible you assume this has to do with nationality or ethnicity, when there are many Asian pianists that have much more active careers and are featured in recordings of the major labels. It appears that you think someone who is not fond of Licad's playing would be unfamiliar with Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Yuja Wang, and many others. Maybe it is you who just does not like pianists from a certain country.
@classicalalways This is a vid clip of Cecil Licad's Tchaikowsky Piano Concerto No.1 and people posted their appreciation for the performance of Cecil. But it's different for you, you summed it up that Cecil is a mediocre pianist that she is no longer playing with orchestras unlike other elite pianist. So what? This is an excellent rendition and Cecil's absence from your visibility could have been caused by certain issue we don't know of. If Lang lang defines your standard, you're an idiot.
@jurbinsky77 No, this is a vid clip of a mediocre performance and some people posted that it was good or great. People like you claimed she was internationally famous and therefore it was good. You claim it is an "excellent" rendition when there are performances by Horowitz, Argerich, Janis, Richter, Gilels, Cliburn, and several others that are more "excellent." You accused racism, but can not account for other Asian pianists who are much more highly regarded and not white. Keep insulting.
@libetta So much of what you say is such nonsense that this is hilarious. One not need be a professional to judge another pianist. That is so wrong on so many levels, but your venom is nice to read.
@libetta Since your friends and pianists know so much about judging, try explaining her OWN manager's website with the latest reviews and where she is playing. Even you can not dispute those are mediocre orchestras and small cities with hints of any important concerts - but maybe you think Santa Rosa, CA is NY or London or Paris or Tokyo.
websites are not the testament of one's greatness. it's easy to say one is mediocre, without constructive analysis. her playing grabs most people, and you cannot do anything to make them feel otherwise
@classicalalways No, why don't you just stick to UFC and "rate" the people you like. If I have a high opinion of this rendition is because I have several Concerto No1 by different pianists and I palyed them in my .013 THD system, hence I can differentiate. Now being fat and stupid does not give you any authority to criticize what other people are enjoying. You old fuck!
@jurbinsky77 Be as nasty as you want and be the first to call me old. If you want to think Licad's performance is above those of Byron Janis, Freire, Argerich, (Horowitz is not for everyone), Gilels, Rubinstein, among others - that's your call. Anyone can argue anything as words are just words. However, there is nothing wrong expressing her performance being mediocre at best. As for today - her own bio's recent "highlights" show few major engagements and she is simply not much in demand.
All these pianists are artist's who bring great pleasure to all.
Why is there this sort of teenage type mentality, like a hideous X Factor for classical music, with fans screaming and calling for their own personal favourites. No one will ever agree on WHO is the best at any form of music, its impossible, human beings always have their own likes and dislikes, in music, politics ,who's the best looking, blah blah, stop arguing and listen and if you dont like it, just click the off button !!
@lovemetu While it may sound nice on paper what you write, the logic does not work since we are talking about an art. It is not like comparing a drama vs sci fi movie. For those who have done their homework and listened critically both of artists in the same work and comparing artists throughout all of their performances, rating musicians and performances is not pointless. Or get rid of all competitions, Grammys, Oscars, and anything else that compares performances.
Yes I can see your point, but as I say some people get very abusive and argumentive about their own choices and as I say everyone has their own favourites, thats human nature. All these musicians are very highly trained and perform all over the world to big aqudiences ,with people paying to see them. Why cannot the fans of the various artist's listen to to others and say something like, ''That was a nice performance by whoever, my own personal favourites are ...whoever ''
I don't think the discussion should get bogged down on whether she is or is not as good as other virtuosi. The whole point to me is to appreciate her interpretation and particular rendition of what is otherwise a commonplace though technically challenging piece of piano music.
@ranhilio Knowing how an artist compares to others in the same commonly played piece of work is the only benchmark for knowing how well that person plays the piece. Today, the Tchaikovsky Concerto is hardly challenging given that so many non-virtuosos play it - and virtuosos whenever possible prefer to perform more demanding works. Of course, it is quite enjoyable - but Licad's is at best very ordinary, and can be argued to be in the lower half of the pile of recordings available.
Search for "Gabrielle Chou" and "Conrad Tao" - they both play the piano and the violin --- absolutely incredible!!!!! Do you have geniuses like that in the Philippines?? I guess not.....
@KellyBoogan hahah, that's what you thought, why don't you come here and find out! every violinist here knows how to play piano too!! u don't know anything about here, u racist... and do you have manny pacqiao? lolz
I completely love this Piano Concerto. It has a mix of so many qualities, just unbelievable. Pogorelich did an amazing job with it. If you would like to listen to another great composer YouTube the Great Great Grandfather in Composition of Peter I. Tchaikovsky:
Wonderful concert and beautiful rendition! Please listen to my performance of Fantasy-Suite for piano from Tchaikowsky's ballet "Swan Lake" and let me know your opinion. Thanks and best regards, Rezo Jorbenadze.
She's now completely overshadowed by new, younger pianists such as Yundi Li, Aimi Kobayashi, Yuja Wang, Valentina Lisitsa, Lilya Zilberstein, Evgeny Kissin and many, many others. Her career has been stagnant for many years now. Other countries produce many, many more talents, and not just in piano but also violin, cello, voice, etc., etc. So don't be proud.
@21436587abc Second best? Try at a minimum Horowitz, Janis, Freire, Argerich, or Gilels (any) that go well above Licad. She might be nice to look at, but don't confuse that with whether she plays this work as well as the greatest interpreters of this work.
@lovemetu Cliburn is certainly one of the most famous performances of all-time, but his performances have both fans and detractors. His Tchaikovsky is certainly not filled with the virtuosity that Horowitz, Janis, and Argerich bring to the table. His fans find it very musical and appropriate for the piece. Certainly Cliburn for a few years was an exciting pianist. Unfortunately, his talents diminished in just a few years.
And how many of the FANS are that educated about the subject of classical music ?
My favourite musical instrument is the violin and there seems so much abuse of the various famous artist's.
Many are abused mainly because they are of a women of Asian descent, racialism seems to be rampant amongst some of the comments. Many of the HATERS are just non achievers themselves, so there is a lot of personal jealousy directed at those who have achieved the top spot.
Morinoroba devotes her life to art and playing her piano. Her father has built her a little ''concert hall' of her own and she does concerts for the local people where she lives in japan. She plays wonderfully, especially Chopin, its nice to give moral support to the lesser known artist's ,they really appreciate the support !!
There are many like her,so cast your net widely and who knows , some of them may become tomorrows stars !!
World class talent from a Filipino. One of the few good things Imelda Marcos did for our country. Stand tall, Cecile Licad, very, very proud of you! Mabuhay!
'Been listening to these many times, never get tired.
She's performing today, July 3rd, 2010 at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines, Manila.
@mehr1350 Save the nationalism for when the Filipino soccer team competes around the world, as Licad can not even be considered one of Asia's most significant pianists.
then i would prefer to be not "one of asia's most significant pianists so long as i have a LEVENTRITT award and one of the star students at CURTIS studying with SERKIN. got anything else?
@libetta If you're familiar with the # of amazing Asian pianists, you know Curtis products are just a few (but fail to acknowledge their talent). Any knowledgable music lover knows great pianists are not judged by prizes won or their teachers, but instead by how they perform great works as compared to other pianists - or what's unique about them. Lang Lang and Yuja Wang are not even today's best Asian musicians (though their techniques are staggering). Both are more exciting than Licad.
no. i have asked a lot of musicians from those schools (Including julliard) and they acknowledge licad as one of the very finest living player. so which competition winner haven't captured you at all? it's like viewing it as just a bunch of wannabes, but fact of a matter is you never get to join one unless you are properly equipped. would serkin even accept her as his student in the first place. you sure have never heard of her Saint-saens or Pappilons, which is listed in history!
It's unfortunate that Licad slows the concerto down to a snail's pace - at times there is just total silence in the first solo piano part. How Licad could be mentioned in the same breath as Argerich in this concerto is mind boggling, especially when there are so many other finer performances ranging from Byron Janis and Nelson Freire and Emil Gilels to for those who like it not so virtuoso - how can one say this performance rivals Cliburn or Richter?
how can it not? as 77 tanaka mentioned, she's full of romantic fire and genuine feelings. argerich is great and all, she just lacks the fervent desire to dig more into the piece
@libetta Playing more slowly does NOT necessarily mean digging more into a piece. Considering pianists like Anton Rubinstein were around the days Tchaikovsky was writing much of his music, certainly the music was written for bold virtuosos (which Licad has never been). Of course, sure, if she had something new and incredible to bring to the piece, like Gould did in Bach - she should be respected. If you want slow, you might as well go to Pogorelic or any of Karajan's pianists..
bold virtuosos- you haven't even heard (no one did) rubinstein in any recording and you have the guts to say he is a BOLD VIRTUOSO and for whatever reason can't explain LICAD not being one. Nice one about Pogorelich. certainly you haven't heard his slow and BANGIN' HYSTERICAL playing. certainly not one that is pleasant or even easy to listen to
This girl is really good. No she is not Argerich or (dare I say) Lang Lang). But she is amazingly virtuosic and has a wonderful understanding of phrasing. I play piano and I will never be as good as her, and it will never be for lack of trying, lol.
I revered Ms. Argerich's version of this masterpiece, the tempo was faster and nicely floating. On the other hand, I applauded Ms. Licad's rendition because her sound was so rich and pure in every register. It was played in orthodox tempo but it was full of romantic fire. Ms. Licad had the artistry to spark genuine emotion, indeed. However, these two great masters played it with a total technical command; two prodigious performances as only Martha Argerich and Cecile Licad can deliver.
Why do filipinos always feel the need to remind everyone that Cecile Licad is in fact a Filipino? Do they think it makes them special because they (along with about 15 million other people) share the same ethnicity?
You can display your heritage all you want, but it won't make your opinion any more valuable than mine
This is because Filipinos are very insecure about their standing in the world. They have very few achievements of international renown compared to other countries. In fact they are always last in the Olympcs, and other international competitions. They are losers. So when one of them excels, such as Licad, they always say "proud to be Pinoy". Who cares? Every person is proud of his/her country, so why even say it? They are so stupid, it makes them so ridiculous!!!
Pinoys are a bunch of fucking losers!!! They can't even rescue their own typhoon flood victims, and have to beg for help from other countries. What a poor, poor country! Talo pa ng Africa. Now say "PROUD to be PiNOY"! Pinoys mga ulol kayong lahat!!!
your very right ,and infact in theworld of pianoists he isnt that rispected like he is in amerca ,the yanks seem to love him ,there are people comeing out of europe and russia every year ass gooid as him
Exactly, just like how cecile licad is a very good pianist, but not to the proportion that Filipinos make her out to be. I've even heard Filipinos say she has the best interpretation of Chopin Ballade No. 1(Ridiculous, listen to Zimerman and tell me shes the best)
Perhaps the moderator/author could also remove the uncalled for vitriolic attack on Cecile Licad. Its uncalled for and not worthy of publication. She is one damn fine pianist.
It's the 21st century: if you expect all comments on the video to be positive, you might as well not post the video at all. Just keep the video to yourselves, Licad devotees.
In every masterpiece there parts that stand out. In this concert, I find Cecile Licad's fingers specially delightful from 5.00 to 6.40. - 77tanaka used the term electrifying. That is what it is. Thank you Cecile and tiklado07!
Ms. Licad's recording of Louis Moreau Gottschalk piano music from NAXOS American Classics is totally astounding. It's so melodious and full of surprising instrumental effects. She played it exuberantly with great flair - the flair that I could only hear from the legendary Vladimir Horowitz. I love her electirifying speed of the repeated notes in Tremolo as well as her crystalline tone which seems to be a dazzling lineup of stars in Le Banjo and La Jota; her riveting rhythmic sounds in The Union.
"The program then was balanced w/ Mozart's Symp #39 & Mozart's Piano Concerto #20 in D minor, the latter w/ the immensely gifted & exciting pianist, Cecile Licad, as soloist .. Licad & [Cond. Peter M. Davies] gave a glowing performance of the Mozart concerto. Licad performs w/ an engaging shyness that is almost diffident. Her playing possesses utmost lyricism & grace, as well as a SOPHISTICATED DIGITAL FLAIR & a powerful command of voices."
{Marilyn Tucker, San Francisco Chronicle, 10-24-1988}
If she's that good, how come she did not get invited to the 10-piano concerto event at the recent Beijing Olympics? You sound like you are Licad's son or mom. Are you???
If she is that good, then how come nobody has made a documentary about her? There are plenty of documentaries about famous musicians, e.g., Kissin, Argerich, Hamelin, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Midori, Sarah Chang, and even Nadia Salerno-Sonnenberg, etc. etc. And also how come she has not been invited as a guest in the David Letterman show (Sultanov, etc. have been invited, even Leah Salonga).
I just noticed that the owner of these videos ( tikladoo uploaded 42 Licad's videos ) has not visited her channel for months. I wonder why and I hope she's okay .
She is very talented player and she plays with passion. I see this in very little players and i am definitely impressed and hope to see more videos up soon. thank you.
Tchaikovsky's no. 2 is better than this.

Let's see where his career is after thirty years.
bulisabahay57 6 months ago
@bulisabahay57 Well, let me ask the "reverse" question: Lang Lang is 28 years old now; when Cecile was 28, had she attained the level of success that Lang Lang had so far? For ex., playing at the White House, Olympics, Grammy nominations & awards, 30+ CD records some of them golden/platinum, performance with Berlin PO and Vienna PO, many magazine covers, Adidas endorsement, several TV documentaries about him, youtube concert, etc., etc. (even though I believe CL is a better musician).

cont'd --
Lang Lang's Buffalo concert was a complete hit, and the audience could not get enough of him, standing ovations and all.
NellyBoogan 6 months ago

Zeusdattilo 7 months ago

Etc.

She is a young Japanese lady who plays the piano wonderfully and is also a fine artistic person.
lovemetu 11 months ago
@lovemetu People can enjoy whatever they like and should do so. But if you read the posts here, several said this was a great performance or even the best one, which Licad is hardly. Who said great and having a name mean anything? One of the best Tchaikovsky's is Freire's that 98% of people have never heard. One of the worst is Pogorelic, who is hardly the top pianist his fans at one time thought he was. But if people are going to write about great or "the best," it should be that.
classicalalways 11 months ago
Well again your point of comparing artist's. Two of my friends are professional pianist's and both of them favour Van Cliburns version of the Tchaikovsky piano concerto as I do myself and yes I have listened to the artists that you mention playing it. All wonderful pianist's though, its just down to personal taste.
As you say, they all have their day, some have long careers, some dont, family pressures, injury problems, motivation, mental problems etc so lets just enjoy them all while we can.
lovemetu 11 months ago
@lovemetu You do not mention who your friends that are professional pianists are and in fact, there are more than a thousand all over the world. Russian pianists commonly prefer Cliburn because at that time, Cliburn's visit to Russia was a historic event. It is personal taste at a certain level - and yes, Cliburn can be compared with top performances. However, the discussion on this page is Licad, and her performance is just mediocre compared to the many pianists who have recorded the piece.

Or you just saw that Ms Licad is not white and therefore inferior, you idiot.
jurbinsky77 11 months ago
@jurbinsky77 You can be as insulting as you like and as wrong as you want. You clearly show your lack of knowledge between a pianist with a thriving solo career versus a pianist who no longer has as much of one. For example, Licad once played some of the kind of concerts that Helene Grimaud plays now - with the elite orchestras. If you know Ms. Licad's career well, you would know that she does not play with orchestras like Chicago very much at all - and this has been for years.

Maybe it is you who just does not like pianists from a certain country.
classicalalways 11 months ago
@classicalalways This is a vid clip of Cecil Licad's Tchaikowsky Piano Concerto No.1 and people posted their appreciation for the performance of Cecil. But it's different for you, you summed it up that Cecil is a mediocre pianist that she is no longer playing with orchestras unlike other elite pianist. So what? This is an excellent rendition and Cecil's absence from your visibility could have been caused by certain issue we don't know of. If Lang lang defines your standard, you're an idiot.
jurbinsky77 11 months ago
@jurbinsky77 No, this is a vid clip of a mediocre performance and some people posted that it was good or great. People like you claimed she was internationally famous and therefore it was good. You claim it is an "excellent" rendition when there are performances by Horowitz, Argerich, Janis, Richter, Gilels, Cliburn, and several others that are more "excellent." You accused racism, but can not account for other Asian pianists who are much more highly regarded and not white. Keep insulting.

libetta 10 months ago
@classicalalways No, why don't you just stick to UFC and "rate" the people you like. If I have a high opinion of this rendition is because I have several Concerto No1 by different pianists and I palyed them in my .013 THD system, hence I can differentiate. Now being fat and stupid does not give you any authority to criticize what other people are enjoying. You old fuck!
jurbinsky77 6 months ago
@jurbinsky77 Be as nasty as you want and be the first to call me old. If you want to think Licad's performance is above those of Byron Janis, Freire, Argerich, (Horowitz is not for everyone), Gilels, Rubinstein, among others - that's your call. Anyone can argue anything as words are just words. However, there is nothing wrong expressing her performance being mediocre at best. As for today - her own bio's recent "highlights" show few major engagements and she is simply not much in demand.
classicalalways 5 months ago
All these pianists are artist's who bring great pleasure to all.
Why is there this sort of teenage type mentality, like a hideous X Factor for classical music, with fans screaming and calling for their own personal favourites. No one will ever agree on WHO is the best at any form of music, its impossible, human beings always have their own likes and dislikes, in music, politics ,who's the best looking, blah blah, stop arguing and listen and if you dont like it, just click the off button !!
lovemetu 11 months ago
@lovemetu While it may sound nice on paper what you write, the logic does not work since we are talking about an art. It is not like comparing a drama vs sci fi movie. For those who have done their homework and listened critically both of artists in the same work and comparing artists throughout all of their performances, rating musicians and performances is not pointless. Or get rid of all competitions, Grammys, Oscars, and anything else that compares performances.
classicalalways 11 months ago
@classicalalways

The whole point to me is to appreciate her interpretation and particular rendition of what is otherwise a commonplace though technically challenging piece of piano music.
ranhilio 1 year ago
@ranhilio Knowing how an artist compares to others in the same commonly played piece of work is the only benchmark for knowing how well that person plays the piece. Today, the Tchaikovsky Concerto is hardly challenging given that so many non-virtuosos play it - and virtuosos whenever possible prefer to perform more demanding works. Of course, it is quite enjoyable - but Licad's is at best very ordinary, and can be argued to be in the lower half of the pile of recordings available.

lovemetu 11 months ago

PIanoReview 1 year ago
@PIanoReview
how can it not? as 77 tanaka mentioned, she's full of romantic fire and genuine feelings. argerich is great and all, she just lacks the fervent desire to dig more into the piece
libetta 1 year ago
@libetta Playing more slowly does NOT necessarily mean digging more into a piece. Considering pianists like Anton Rubinstein were around the days Tchaikovsky was writing much of his music, certainly the music was written for bold virtuosos (which Licad has never been). Of course, sure, if she had something new and incredible to bring to the piece, like Gould did in Bach - she should be respected. If you want slow, you might as well go to Pogorelic or any of Karajan's pianists..
PIanoReview 1 year ago

I revered Ms. Argerich's version of this masterpiece, the tempo was faster and nicely floating. On the other hand, I applauded Ms. Licad's rendition because her sound was so rich and pure in every register. It was played in orthodox tempo but it was full of romantic fire. Ms. Licad had the artistry to spark genuine emotion, indeed. However, these two great masters played it with a total technical command; two prodigious performances as only Martha Argerich and Cecile Licad can deliver.

I know. Its like, I don't go to Van Cliburn videos and write: "yay USA Pride!!" Probably because I understand that NOBODY CARES.

I would recommend trying to spell conception before you hate on other countries.

I would recommnend looking up the Spanish form of "conception" (my surname) before responding to other comments.

Oh, so you have a finger fetish....

If she's that good, how come she did not get invited to the 10-piano concerto event at the recent Beijing Olympics? You sound like you are Licad's son or mom. Are you???
MadamePukengkay 2 years ago
If she is that good, then how come nobody has made a documentary about her? There are plenty of documentaries about famous musicians, e.g., Kissin, Argerich, Hamelin, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Midori, Sarah Chang, and even Nadia Salerno-Sonnenberg, etc. etc. And also how come she has not been invited as a guest in the David Letterman show (Sultanov, etc. have been invited, even Leah Salonga).

Why are you posting reviews from 20+ years ago? You just emphasize, unwittingly for sure, the fact that she is now "laos."

I just noticed that the owner of these videos ( tikladoo uploaded 42 Licad's videos ) has not visited her channel for months. I wonder why and I hope she's okay .
