You can sneak a lot past the censors if you're clever. The line in this song where he's getting hot and heavy with his girl on Lover's Lane and she says, "I need a filter on that" -- meaning a condom.
I'm surprised they were able to get away with the little hand action at 1:23. Pretty risque for back then. Actually , pretty risque for prime time even now.
@karinablacktie Not that risque. They used to squeeze all kinds of double entendres into their stuff. Lousy story since I can't remember the participants, but a comic, probably Milton Berle, and an actress, Marilyn, Diana Dors, Jane Mansfield? had this interchange: He: You want to play television? She: Sure, how do you play? He: I play with your knobs and you watch my antenna go up. This was an old joke in the 50's. No problem with censors since the shows were LIVE.
There are only two famous people I have always wanted to meet but never will be able to due to the fact that they passed away before I was born: John Wayne, and Phil Harris.
This guy was the "definition of "cool" ....nobody was ever better than Phil Harris! Only person who could even "remotely" come close in the "cool" division was Dean Martin.
I'm 31 years old and I have a very special place in my heart for Mr. Phil Harris. I'm glad I found this video. He was truly a class act. --Johnny Cash, a legend as well:)
Phil Harris and Alice Faye had a radio program that was funny tunny funny. You can hear them at OTR. Truust me you will enjoy it. It was a take off from Jack Benny.
I love "The Darktown Poker Club" by Phil Harris-I first heard it on Radio 2's Alan Dell Big Band show here in the UK in the 1970s, and finally got a copy of it last year!
Exquisite talent and widely known in his time, even now.
I saw him hunting with Curt Gowdy and Bing Crosby on ABC's "The American Sportsman" and I never stopped to ponder how cool that was until now. Try getting a show devoted to hunting on Network TV today.
Though at the time I hadn't known Phil for his crooning, I knew him for being the substantial talent that propelled Baloo the Bear. My Mom told me so.
