Get YOUR money grubbing soul checked. He was a tragic ass. I worked with him several times. Big cheeseburger and good French fries. B-Drawer Buffett at best.
ShockDoc - You're just like all the people who say they're his son or daughter, or, like you, worked with him. He had no children, unfortunately, and the only place he ever worked, by choice, was a Montgomery Wards and the only person he socialized with from that job became a life-long close friend, and, trust me, it wasn't you.
If the guy had done no more than write "If I Could Only Fly" it would have been enough. I had never heard him perform his own songs until now, but I know his songs always made me stop and look for the songwriting credit when other people covered them. I'm anxious to see this film to find out more about who he was.
@ShockDoc You oughta pick up the latest Blaze Foley album that's just come out on Fat Possum Records (same label that has Townes' recordings), THE DAWG YEARS. Earliest known recordings of Foley, great stuff.
@schoepsman It's a comin'! We wanted to get as much archival performance footage into the movie as possible -- it's finished now, just going through the polishing process. Gonna start showing it next year. These things kinda take time but it's fixin' to arrive.
@poorjennie The film was scheduled to premiere at SXSW 2009 but the projector bulb unfortunately failed and it never screened. We took the opportunity to re-edit the film to fix a couple of rough spots (we rushed it to the festival) and will be releasing it in early 2011 with a tour.
The documentary looks great, hopefully i will get to see it one day, the problem being that i live in Ireland. The clip of Clay Pidgeons is really special, i wander if that clip will ever be posted in full here?
thank you so much for digging up this bit of treasure on a man I knew was very special-the way he lived & what he stood for. He shouldve been as big as Johnny Cash-I even like his rumbin voice better than Cash. Bless them both. Please make the tribute-final video available to the public. He needs to be honored & remembered forever. Thank you
It didn't premiere, due to a fluke projector problem that the festival couldn't have predicted or was able to deal with (some people who were in the audience that night are blaming Blaze for the projector bulb going out). So it's still in production, the filmmaker interviewed is re-editing it and hopes to release it in 2010.

This director/producer is opportunistic as hell, has completely free reign since his subject obviously has nothing to say about it, and is at least honest about trying to make a buck and promote HIMSELF. The guy didnt even know Foley. I did, and thought he was an amateurish putz, blunt and pushy, and always trying to piss people off, which he did. If I could Only Fly' was the only one that showed any promise.People claim he was 'honest'. If the guy hadnt died,no one would be talking about him.
..YOU are WRONG, ShockDoc. The maker of this Doc. is a GREAT guy and personal friend to me! I,as is the director, are also close friends to Blaze's sister and son,and personal friends who loved Blaze! You know NOTHING and are bitter-stuck in the past bitterness that will one day drown you!
no body id talking about your stupid ass. Maybe you knew him, maybe not, but for you to critiqe his shit? John Prine sang his stuff, Lyle Lovett did too, and no one will ever sing your shit you jealous little toad.
Obviously you are neither a judge of talent or humanity. Blaze was a friend of mine, something I will always be proud of, and he was obviously beyond your comprehension, sad. On Jack Teagarden's gravestone it says "Where there is hatred, sow love". Listen to Jack and Blaze, two Texas greats.
Yeah, I don't ever remember Blaze even having a wallet. Let me think...hmmm. I do remember going up to David's Market to buy more than a few quarts of Lone Star beer on several occassions but a wallet? My memory is fading! What's new? lol.
Wrecks Bell had Blaze's wallet on the wall at The Old Quarter in Galveston for 14 years.Ike hit and water rose 8 feet inside the OldQuarter. The wallet was lost with everything else. We would show his drivers license to fans,he left it with Wrecks in Houston the week before he died. He is a legend in songwriting circles.Wrecks,Jon Hogan and others still sing his songs.
nothing got releasd by him cuz he was a real musician

Sure wish the film would come to Denver! Somehow, I doubt it'll show up on Netflix. That's too much to hope for.
