Spartan sword blades and spear heads were made from Iron, at least during the time that Sparta was at it's peak power in the 6th-5th century BC. The armor, helmets, shields as well as grips and handles of swords and the butt spikes of spears were made with bronze, but the actually cutting and piercing blades were made of iron because of it's better edge.
I've always liked to imagine what it would have been like had there been a Spartan king who hired, or built a colony for, a large number of Scythians to serve as a cavalry arm for the Spartan army. Just imagine, the best infantry of the time combined with the best cavalry from the steppe. A phalanx of men trained and working together from age 7 forming an unbroken wall of shield combined with horsemen who can outrun and outshoot anyone, killing from 400 yds and killing precisely from 200 yds.
@LoneMyth Guessed as much. At ancient times, symbolism was used often as means to ward oneself from evil, or even grant strength. Whats funny to me is that we could say that Spartans were real dickheads. :)

@GodOfWar221 ... let alone the Minor Asian Thraecians like Moesians, Phrygians, Pamphlagonians.
What is interesting in the study of Phrygians is that them they apparently migrated from coastal Thrace (east of Macedonia) into Minor Asia in Mycenaean times and from there on they had more contact with Middle Eastern tribes than with post-Mycenaean Greeks who dived into Middle-Ages.
Yet in archaic times, Phrygians spoke a language that was too close to Greek - a huge hint on south Thraecian tribes

"like you're facing an army of death robots"!!! That must have been exactly what the poor Persians thought as the Spartan death robots bore down on them. Star Wars 480 BC. What a git!
@lion3p0 Not always. Even after the widespread use of iron weaponry, bronze swords and spearheads were common and there are a number of reasons for that. People do not realise that iron's qualities superceded on the whole those of bronze only after the use of the blast furnaces (developed most probably first by Chinese then brought to Europe in late middle ages - note though that Chinese used them for wrough iron and still preferred bronze for their weapons). Prior to that...
... prior to that, iron weapons came at a VERY variable quality because of the imperfections and residuals in un-melted iron. And it could be almost accidental. You would mass produce 10 swords, the 1 would be excellent, the 3 fairly good, other 2 acceptable and the rest would be so crap that would break on first hit (no kidding here...). And watch out: the secret of fake-steel (you know the japanese treating...) was known since Mycenaean times (eg. we have a Cypriot dagger with steel layers)
on the other hand bronze had a more predictable quality and there were known procedures to produce ultra hard bronze very close to the hardest bronze types we can produce even today. Hence the alledged difference of pre-blast furnace iron vs.bronze was NOT that big as people in the 19th and early 20th century imagined.
Naturally soldiers felt more comfortable using iron for consumables (i.e. spearheads, arrowheads and swords). For armor, bronze was the most indicated though iron was also in use
@GodOfWar221 Oh... hollywood is just hollywood, and Troy is really super-hollywood to be part of a serious re-enactment discussion. But anyway, just to point out your suggestion: Sparta mentioned in the poem of Homer was a city dwelled by Achaians or so, i.e. tribes identical to Mycenaeans. The later, well known Spartans, were Dorians, i.e. a branch of the Macedonian-Epirot tribes who descended gradually to south Greece from north Greece conquering a number of cities inbtween 1100 and 900 B.C.
@notgodsemigod Oh I had no idea the city-state Sparta was made up out of so many different tribes over the years, but it makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Thanks a lot for the information, I don't really enjoy the movie myself. I mean sure the story of the Illiad is a story of lovers and war, but they added a little more lovers and too little war in that movie, there are many things I would have changed. Anyway, thanks again for the reply, I appreciate the information!
@GodOfWar221 Yes. We have to keep in mind that Greeks as a nation (and just like any other true nation) were a collection of tribes (certainly relative tribes but then each with its own characteristics). To be noted that in Mycenaean times there were more tribes (other lost other evolved and changing names, changing accents etc.). For example, the Linear B tablets (by now proven ancestor of the Greek alphabet) reveal a 100% Greek dialect but do not point out a link to one of later dialects.
@GodOfWar221 You could devide Greek tribes into 4 main large groups:
1) The southern ones: Arcadians & Achaians: these are supposed to be the more ancient tribes of Peloponesus (they are those we called Mycenaeans)
2) The eastern ones: Ionians - alledgedly from Peloponesus too but all evidence points the Aegean and Minor Asia coastline where the 95% of their initial centers are found
3) The central ones: Aeolians & Boetians
4) The northern ones: Macedonians-Epirots-Aetolians-Dorians
@notgodsemigod ... also, one has to take into account that while these aforementioned tribes constituted the body of the nation of Greeks, from there one, though research is still ongoing there is a huge list of neighbouring tribes that were historically called (first by Greeks themselves) as "barbarians" who really were nothing else than cousin-tribes even speaking cousin-dialects. The biggest example is Thraecians.
@GodOfWar221 You have to undestand that the term "Thraecian" was used even in ancient times as a bunch-up geographical term than really as a real tribal one. In reality there is absolutely no proof, no linguistic evidence and even no cultural overulling evidence to link up "Thraecian" tribes so diverse as the Dacians north of Danube the Thraecians of the middle range, the Aegean coast Thraecians (like the Agrianes), the Paeonians and Dardanians north of Macedonia and of course ...
