I'm saying, for example, if I set my ipod on a table and play something throught the built in speakers, then attach the earphones and set them on the table as well, I can hear it louder with the earphones attached (which is not something that is to be expected as you imply, considering the size of the earphones' drivers).

When you listen to them in person, the gap between the performance of the 4G and 3G is much more obvious. The 3G is almost silent at its highest volume whenever there is any background noise whatsoever, even when using an app to enhance the speaker volume.

@Simone96TV I can't recommend it, but there are a low number of failed firmware flash instals that cause bricking so I wouldnt be too concerned by that. Jailbreaking technically voids your warranty if Apple discovers it, but otherwise if you find useful apps in the Cydia store than enjoy! I've never found much need to jailbreak beyond curiosity, very little of it is useful to me.

The iPhone definitely has more low end than the touch 4G but that could have partly to due with the larger surface area of the back against the table while the touch is curved and doesn't make as much contact. The touch 4G sounds the same other than the low end. The 2G/3G is quieter and has less lows and highs.

All the devices sound quite different when you are holding them, a flat surface amplifies them.

@jdsony The ifixit teardowns also do a great job illustrating the designs of the speaker systems and the champers designed to amplify the sound. Naturaly, the iPhone 4 has a louder speaker and a larger chamber so the frequency range is lower.

32GB is best for your money. It has 4x the space as the 8GB and costs less than double the 8GB. Also, just with all the extra stuff for support etc, the 8GB only leaves you with like 6.5GB to download your own stuff. If you mainly want apps, definitely go for 32GB, and like DetroitBORG said; videos and video recordings take up ALOT of space.
