If I'm understanding this properly, one party chants the melody while the other party either drones or chants the notes of the chord on which the song is based, correct?

Reason I ask is that I'm more familiar with Gregorian chant and Medieval polyphony than the Eastern styles of chant.

Unfortunately-that means you're not orthodox,cause if you were-you would stay loyal to real orthodox tradition and the holy fathers that are against uniting in any sence. You can not think or improvize your own way.That would mean that everyone should believe their own way and no one would stay orthodox and loyal to the Truth,that is ONE and ONLY.Relax and give yourself to His will. Pray,fast and don't worry.Let muslims and others.

You watch those things from a political point of view.But from a religious- we are the soldiers of Christ,we are suppose to die for Him because He died for us.While many orthodox Christians were tortured and killed from the catholics with a blessing of a pope,than you didn't need a unity.Now when you realized that you are about to vanish-you want unity. It is a big sin,and even bigger heresy.Our holy fathers forbid it,strongly. We will never unite,God give.
