Get yourself a diesel turbo. Mine is a 1600cc ford focus. 60mpg without trying or using silly tyre pressures. 0-60mph in 10s and 120mph, low tax & insurance, very cheap to run. Weighs less than a prius too, cheaper to service. 70+mpg on the motorway and that's all with hard acceleration. No messing with a prius and the complete con that they are. They should use a diesel generator to power the motor, not an engine.
when the prius first came out, they said it got 70mpg. they lied. most owners say the best they get is 45mpg. not that great. a ford escape is much more practical and gets 38mpg easy, and tops at about 42. when you consider you are driving a disposable car meant to last 2 years, isnt that worst for the environment. does the mpg really make up for it? in japan and korea people have to scarp their cars when they reach 2 years of age. and thats all they are really made for. i say buy from big three
@anthonyledo Who said it gets 70mpg? Do you have a source? I never read or heard that claimed by Toyota. On average I used to get 45mpg like you say. I have replaced that car with a new one which averages closer to 50 and gets better mileage when I try to, like setting the cruise. I also don't know why you assert is is meant to last 2 years. I leased it for 3 years without any issues and returned it with 62K miles. The batteries are lasting well over 100K miles.
toyota told us it did. the first generation prius. they lied to us, but its expected. i guess toyota tested fuel consumption while rolling down a hill to bend the stats in their favour. if you read the real sources people can make 45mpg tops. as someone else below said, the computers are not to acurate. they are absolutly right, use pen and paper. i have a v8 explorer the computer told me it got 54mpg once. no way in hell. was more like 20. prius is not as friendly as they say. toyota lies.
@anthonyledo Just FYI I have actually audited the computer by calculating my mileage at the pump and it was right on.
I remember when Prius 1 came out people said it got 60MPG city. This is not a lie but is debateable. Over a short distance combing the all electric feature with stop and go regen braking you can attain this. The new Prius has an all electric EV setting for slow city driving where you aren't burning gas at all. You have to admit the technology is interesting for the future.
@anthonyledo The cars hybrid system including battery is under warrenty for the first 8 years or 100K miles, and in New york their are prius taxies with over 300k miles on them, we just bought an 06, and it runs like new....literally...and no matter howww hard we try we cant get under 45 mpg or so, ave is about 50-55....so not sure what your smokein...oh also thats calculated at the pump..the computers normally 1-2mpg off.
@anthonyledo oh also we went around to all the dealers and test drove what they had to offer comparable to the prius, new, used ....didn't matter nothing even came close to the prius.
Big deal. I will get over 60 mpg on the highway at the same speed in my Jetta TDI. Not to mention I will drive about 200 miles further thanks to a bigger tank. Also, don't take the MFD readings to heart. They are often wrong and that is not an accurate way to calculate mpg. Pencil and paper are the only way.
This is a day ago and you just said a few mins ago in another post you expect to get 50mpg on the highway and that you haven't even put it on the highway yet. lol
The mfd on the Prius is 0.3% accurate. The vw (at least the previous gens.) are not very accurate and you can't rely on them. For example, when you are slowing down and stopped, it says they aren't using any fuel..and yet the engine is running on them. That was one reason you can't trust them.
Yes, but the Prius technology is a stepping stone to plug in hybrids which are going to change the world. A lot of people misinterpret my enthusiasm as being that the current Prius is the answer to the world's problems. I just see it as an interesting first step. My next car will be an Aptera which will get 300 miles to the first gallon of gasoline. That's were the future is IMO.
A geo metro? ok, so lets figure this out. You buy a geo metro that doesn't have any of the safety things from today, is a MUCH smaller car and has a engine bay that you can see more of the ground then the engine. Never mind all the repairs it's going to need to get it running again. You'd spend more time on the bus then driving it. what a dumb shit!
What, seatbelts and 2 airbags are enough for me! Smaller car meansless weight means more mpg, who cares if the engine is small, THAT IS HOW YOU GET 50 MPG, STUPID. Repairs? Autos on MSN begs to differ, think before you post, stupid.
then to Japan for assembly, and finally to the United States. All this shipment for each tiny step in the production process costs a great deal, both in dollars and in pollution.
The Prius' battery contains nickel, which is mined in Ontario Canada. The plant that smelts this nickel is apparently nicknamed "the Superstack" because of the amount of pollution it puts out; the area for miles around it is a wasteland because of acid rain and air pollution That smelted nickel then has to travel (by container ship) to Europe to be refined, then to China to be made into nickel foam,
While I think that is an interesting point I'd have to say that a Prius is probably a very good use for the nickel. After all, they didn't put the mine there because of the Prius. I like the Prius because it is the first of its kind. Everyone knocks it when it is a pretty cool breakthrough that has far more positives than negatives IMO, and time will only improve on it.
I know this is old..but you are wrong. I live not to far from that plant. It has been there since the 1800s. Most of the damage is done from back then. It is NOT nicknamed anything lol. It is no longer wasteland around it as it once was and it now wins all sorts of awards because it is the best plant in the world...probalby why Toyota buys from there. And do you honestly like that the nickel is the only thing on the ships making the trip? No.
Maybe you should look around and see what else that nickel is used for. Or maybe you should take a look at that nice lead acid battery you have in your car...the Prius' battery isn't NEARLY has harmful to make as your regular cars battery.
TWO words. GEO METRO!!!!!! 1.0 liter, 3cyl, 55mpg No stupid $12,000 battery to go bad and no bull shit. The technology for high mpg vehicls has been around for ever. Check out the BMW isetta from the 1950's aor the 1960's SAAB. All got 50 to 60 mpg.
I know, that's why I leased this one because I figured they would quickly become obsolete when the plug ins become available next year. I think people paying more than they cost new to buy a used one right now are crazy.

@anthonyledo In Japan, they do replace car engines not scrap the whole car, but I'm not sure what that has to do with my vid.
