@emptycell Perhaps Buchanan and Debaser11, like many others, think first of the shorter, power-based events when T&F comes up. (Everyone knows Usain Bolt; few have heard of Gebrselassie.) In that area we see the greatest proportion of black athletes; while more generally, as you mention, the USATF team is almost half black. Still, the black population of America is only 13%, so Pat's main thesis (that overrepresentation of certain groups in certain areas need not be discrimination) still holds.

I know some african-americans who value education, worked their way through school and are very successful in my field of business and rightfully so. It would also seem that wherever blacks are impoverish there is segment of a present, or once controlling, white population... The error in your thinking, "illness" as you call it, is trying to compare a sport (no power, no political affiliation, no decision making & no interpreting of the law that affects all people) with the most powerful judicial position in the country. People need to get over this belief that affirmative action means unqualified people get into positions they're not qualified for. You don't get in unless you've got the grades and other qualifications. Affirmative action just helps insure that some of those who are admitted are from minority groups. I <3 Rachel Maddow......THIS is why I love to watch the show. She has such grace when faced with a position that she disagrees with; she gave him plenty of time to make his position clear, made her own clear, still gave him time to rebut/respond, and let viewers pretty much make up their own mind (unlike other pundits/shows/stations).

I'm just impressed with this dialogue, over all. I wouldn't have handled myself so well.
