the 'iceball' theory of comets is somewhat implausible in many cases as any 'ice' would be well and truely atomised that close to the sun.

In the Southern Hemisphere maybe.This was very close to hitting the Sun. I have not been told of any reports from the Northern Hemisphere, Nor have I seen any images as of yet
