I've had this set for a few years but because of where I stay I can never play them :( I've only ever been able to hear them while playing gigs. Sounds great to hear them again.
@Eddyles one thing ill say with my kit (mapex stomp) was the hardware that came with it had those ball joint stands and they never stay in the right place ended up buying new tama road pro arms other than that awsome kits, cant beat a nice 24 bass
Nice video man! I'm definitely starting to like the Evans EC2s a lot more after playing with them a while. I use to be very remo biase(and I still am for marching percussion at the high school where I teach) but, I have always loved the Evan Hx dry head with the pin holes on my snare. That has to be the most amazing snare head I have ever used.
Oh my goodness! And only with one mic thats amazing. So from my understanding you had EC2's over all of the toms and snare and the stock reso's? I have a Pro M myself. I have a studio 6 piece and I would love to have my drums mic'd up the way you do yours with only a mic. Man you'll have to let me know your tuning habits in detail because I have a hard time with my drums sometimes.
@njkidd10 yes it is EC2 coated on all the toms and snare and stock reso heads. I had them tuned about medium-loose but now have them a little tighter and they sound better. Check out the Bob Gatzen tuning videos, that's a great starting point, and I usually tune the snare a little tighter.
where did u point the mic i seriously wanna know how to do this. from what ive seen dynamic mics are pretty selective. whever u point them there gonna record so idk how u did this since ur drum set is pretty large. like what did u point it towards to get such a good recording.
@TheTelepathetics My ceiling is short so I think it was pretty much directly over my head a couple feet pointed down between the snare and kick drum. If you can get two mics, google "Glyn Johns" or "Recorderman drum miking" and it's the same huge sound but even fuller and in stereo. It only took me about 10 years of recording to figure out fewer = better!
@TheTelepathetics thanks! you really don't need a lot of stuff to get a good drum sound, just well tuned drums...Bonham used to only use a couple mics.
Hey I'm just wondering, does a 24" bass drum make a big difference in sound? I'm trying to decide between Mapex pro m (22" bass), and a ddrum dominion (24" bass) they're both maple but the ddrum has die cast hoops and bigger bass drum so I think I'm going to go with that. But if you'd like to throw in any wise words, feel welcome! =]
@Musefan6732 I actually had both a 22 and 24 for a bit. The 22 is punchier and sounds more "studio/EQ'd" to my ears. It was easier to tune and position the toms and heads were MUCH easier to find in stores (24's are super rare). The 24 is louder and has a lower pitch to it, but you have to tune it tighter to get it to cut through, which makes it a bit boomier sounding. I'm hoping to sell this kit next year and get a DW with 22x18 personally...but I can't complain about the sound of the 24.
@bambamsi the snare had an Evans EC2 coated with a bit of duct tape to mellow the ring over a Hazy 300 resonant with Puresound 16 strand bronze wires.
Probably the reason it sounds big and "80's" like is that my basement has concrete floors and brick walls, so it's very lively. I also used a bit of room mic for a more live sound.
i just got the snare head alittle bit ago setting it up tommorrow

how is your kick tuned?
rider2443 1 year ago
@rider2443 About medium I'd say. The 24 needs to be tuned a little higher to cut through. Good video is one by Bob Gatzen.
JarickL 1 year ago
@JarickL are both heads tuned the same and what are you dampening with?
rider2443 1 year ago
@rider2443 Usually they're pretty close in pitch, sometimes one is tuned a little looser than the other no dampening aside from the EMAD.

O ok thanks. Ill have to try those heads one day. Love the sound.

What kind of resonant and batter head do you have on your mounted tom directly in front of your snare?
lildaddysweetvoice 1 year ago
@lildaddysweetvoice It's the stock Remo UT head that was on the batter, similar to a clear Ambassador but not quite as good quality.
JarickL 1 year ago
Amazing sound for a mapex.

can u get that kind of sound out of ur 8 ply keller toms? im trying to decide between 6 nd 8. thanx
WillyBangsTheDrum 1 year ago
@WillyBangsTheDrum I'd try and track down Gladstone shells from C&C, they seem like they'd be amazing. More wood and fewer plies = way more tone.
JarickL 1 year ago
Your 10" toms sounds outstanding, nice tuning!
How is it tuned? You finger-tighten the lugs, then how many turns of the dial do you do, more or less that 1 full turn?
