What do you think about those that go to prison to join a violent gang when they get out? Or about people like Warren Jeffs who rapes 12 to 15 year old girls so they can have girls to get raped in the future by the one who raped their mom. There are sick people out there that needs incarceration and shouldn't be allowed to get out.

That's not old! The facility in Owen Sound , Ontario, Canada is over 157 years old and plans are to keep it limping along for another fifteen or so. It is hidden amongst residences ( the front building is 12.9 feet from my property; the back of the walled area is 11 feet away; my bedroom windows are 33 feet from the property line). The County of Grey owns the property and collects a large monthly lease, the City of Owen Sound will have to buy the jail if it closes -- it agrees to anything.
prison systems are not money makers the ratio of inmates to staff is crazy. In oklahoma all staff has to take a furlough day just to help pay for cost of a prison. The number of inmates has not doubled but went seven times what there poplulation of inmates was. The are given medical and if chronic free and if chronic medical medications are free the price we pay for something at a store the get dirt cheap. Inmates are the one makin the business 3 hot meals, free home and cheap prices for them.

Maybe the lawmakers should get a real tour of prison. Throw them in there for two days and I bet they wont pass as many laws that lock pot heads up. Hell I think every prosecutor and judge should experience it too just so they know the hell that they are sending people to.

option #3, remodel the entire facility handle all maintenance issues, inventory and renovation, paid for by that state's taxes 20% and the other 80% of the monetary funds from Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, with the inmates working in the prison metal shop for these companies to pay for a new luxury palace
Most people think that prisoners are monsters and should be treated poorly but most are just guys who 'screwed up'. Many are non-violent drug offenders who got caught doing something many of us have done at one point in our lives. Remember that we live in a "Prison Nation" that incarcerates more people per-capita than any other country in the world! Never judge convicts too harshly because odds are that YOU could easily be an inmate at some point in YOUR life. Never think "Not Me!"...
Only those involved in the multi billion dollar "buisness" of the prison industrial complex and the sheeps in society who believe the poltics of fear are beating the drums for new and more prisons.

@strong8action I so agree. One recommendation I would make, is that we need to have more flexibility on privilages that prisoners have. For instance, what we could do is put the more remorseful prisoners in prison cells with a computer desk so they can play World of Warcraft until parole or release. I am imagining that a photo-sensitive keyboard system would allow bulletproof glass to protect computer hardware from violent criminals whilst allowing data entry.
