  • took me back a few years

  • yes i totally agree inthephone trouble today is that we still have from may 2010 a un elected pm and a un elected government .chinless wonder cameron and that other shister glegg went behind closed doors and stitched everybody up including his own.but remeber we are all in this together yeah like fuck we are.

  • what kind of glasses is weller wearing?

  • @SumGuyNamedBrody cool ones

  • Revolution.

  • I play this LOUD when my kids arnt in the house...only because they love the jam and wudnt if they they knew there mum was a closet jam fan lol xxx they are 19 and 12...it wud be social sucide for them hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • I play this LOUD when me wife's not in the house.

  • when a song this good is number 4 you know decent music is being made!

  • kill the posh rich

  • What the fuck is the matter with english music today ? It is less than zero/boring and shit! I want The who, Motörhead, The Jam and Damned back !

  • @aivopark Someone called Simon Cowell and his ilk is responsible.

  • I like how crap the lip syncing is. Paul Weller makes me laugh, love this song.

  • @RayCrayon16 I remember Paul Weller, as a protest to the BBC on Top Of The Pops, keeping his mouth shut while his song played, he hated miming and wanted to sing live, and he protested by NOT miming.

  • what a catalyst you turned out to be..

  • The strongest git from a 19 yr old - let alone sardonic lyrics too

great bridge - who played keys?

  • @VexStarcraft ᴸᴹᴬᴼ he probably has sore elbows..

  • My sisters handle on the C.B was The Jam cause she was in love with them. Brilliant band. : )

  • gud tune eatin trifles ha ha

  • It's rather pathetic that they made them lip-sync this. I love the Jam more than I ever did, and this song is incredible, but the dumb lip-synced vocals ruins the performance for me.

  • so there playing by mine in the cavern in liverpool on december 1st i will have 2 get a ticket :-))

  • @TheOgo1971 Sounds like a plan

  • wow in the 80s and still wow in the 2011 :-))

  • @TheOgo1971 But it isn't an 80's song, it's from 1979 making it very late 70's.

  • the lip syncing annoys me

  • Paul Weller was always from the Roy Wood/Gary Glitter school of miming i.e pretty hopeless. Briliant song though.

  • Wonder if any of their kids entered Eton?

  • I love this song.. awesome lyrics..

  • Die Muslims

  • Eating trifles, eating trifles!

  • @GenuineBadman That made my weekend. Ruined the song for me, but it's a fair trade, innit?

  • Drummer looks like he's having a fit... and so many things wrong with paul wellers hair it's unbelievable, but amazing amazing song!

  • @MsCalmbeforethestorm RU 12 years old?

  • @Hornet0biker No actually.. But seen as you have to reply to comments in text speak obviously means you have the IQ of a two year old.

  • @MsCalmbeforethestorm Let's be honest, no-one should give a fuck how anything on youtube is spelt. Especially when your's isn't 100% correct as well.

  • @NeonKeerit The internet*

  • @NeonKeerit Can we not just have a bit of peace and love here?

  • @MsCalmbeforethestorm To have hair at all...sigh.

  • @MsCalmbeforethestorm What are you on about? This was 1979, that was the hairstyle then, a lot of the lads had hairstyles like that.

So what are you on about??????????????????????????????

  • one of their best songs but hey they they were all good.....

  • four public school boys didn't like this song.

  • Comment removed

  • if i remember right this song is about eton pupils joining up to help the police crack some heads during the great strike sometime during the 20s i believe.

  • @bregreen72 no it's about a group of eton rifles who jeered at unemployed workers or something

basically paul weller doesn't like the eton rifles

  • @tchoeool

Yeah, the whole story is he read a newspaper article that a bunch of Eton Officer Training Corps cadets (called "Eton's Rifles" in the song) were, as you said, jeering unemployed and working class workers marching in a protest, so a bunch of the marchers went to teach the cadets a lesson, but unfortunately found that "All that rugby puts hairs on your chest" and ended up getting beaten up by the outnumbered Etonians instead.

The message being: the whole game is rigged.

  • Ha, brings back so many memories of watching it on TOTP's :))

  • Paul Weller's nick name was the father of mod and it was a well deserved nick name.

  • @jinty59 He was more called 'The Modfather' :3

  • @jinty59 They call him 'The Modfather' :)

  • "i like the guy in the corner doing really enthusiastic dancing at 1:23" hahahah

  • ahhh when i was probably about 5/6 and my dad would play this in the car and i'd sing eating trifles haha oh dear

  • I'm 5 and it really pisses me off that the rest of the kids in my montessori don't like the Jam. Fucks sake!

  • Back when a certain guitar didnt cost a over a grand

  • I like!

It Was a Drinking Song Fucking Cadet!

    Paul Weller,2008

  • As usual a great story-telling song from my favourite band. What a tune!

  • The craft of song writing has largely been lost because X factor and Simon Cowell inspired types simply have nothing relevant to say, they've become TOO polished. anybody can have a number one single if you throw enough money at marketing the damn product and that's my problem it's not passionate or emotional it's PRODUCED and targeted at a deomgraphic

  • i'm 89 and i hate this because it killed my dog. :( R.I.P. Barney.

  • @logicalChris wow. no need ...... no need

  • @N64ryan There is a need when innocent dogs are dying because of shit like this.

  • i like his dance during the solo

  • I love the jam screw you tiny tempa.

  • drummer at the front cool realy good bass on this song

  • god, how old was weller when he wrote all these? Unbelievable.

  • @kerumble i know he was in his late teens when he wrote Going Underground, think he was about 22-23 wen he wrote this! He is a god in the music bizz,a well respected (and rightly so) musician.

  • I'm sorry, maybe it doesn't matter how old I am, but I wish I'd been around to see bands like the Jam/Clash/Members live; no matter how many revival tours they do, it won't be the same:/

  • @Ozymaddyas Ha ha maybe not, I saw The Jam play live 3 times and I'm 50 this year LOL.

  • Stop posting your fucking age no one cares, you like the music? Great listen to it and shut up!

    Viva la punk!

  • Newsflash: Nobody gives a fuck what your age is. There's still decent music out there, you just have to look for it. Look deep into current music scenes and you'll find witty, poignant lyrics, fantastic bass riffs and solid vocals.

Yes, we get that you've decided you dislike the mainstream way, posting your age and expecting adoration from old mods is laudable though. Grow a pair and look deeper. You weren't "born in the wrong decade" make this decade your own.

  • @jenssalumae2 Difference is before the 90's you didn't have to look for decent music, it came to you. We had New wave, Mod, Ska, Rockabilly and New Romantics in the 80's, we didn't have to go looking for good music, it came to us. I feel sorry for younger people today, all they get is songs about having sex, it's a shame.

  • @CarsChicksHaribo Well I suppose being buggered to within an inch of one's life after Divinity Lessons by the Latin Master has to have its compensations. One may be poor and without status but at least one's rectum doesn't hang out like a burst balloon

  • im 13 and i love this song but i also think that some of the songs today are quite good ... but theres more good songs and bands from the 80's and stuff ... like madness :D

  • Im a 14 year old bass player and the Jam are probaly my biggest influences when I create my own music. This stuff never ages.

  • The Eton Rifles now rule Britian

  • @Sylaq socialists don't hate the rich just because they are rich. Socialists hate the system that we have grown to accept in which those who have money seemingly having more rights than those without. Yes Paul Weller sent his kid to a posh school. He wanted the best for his kid of course he did, the values Socialism dont imply that the rich do not have a right to send their kids to the best education possible, only that those who are not rich have the right to the same quality of education also.

  • people who came from datchet or eton know what this is about

  • Some of the garbage written on here is so badly thought out an really just hateful mainly it seems towards the most vulnerable . Perhaps this is the price were paying for the Eton rifles......Eton rifles!

  • Am I the only one here who is just here for the music and not the shit storm? better grab the popcorn, this shits kicking off.

  • The hypocrisy from you pseudo socalists is beyond parody. In one instance you're agreeing with the song's sentiments of "class-struggle" & how Thatcher made millions unemployed, & then in the next breadth you're having a go at "unemployed chavs", like a bunch of fucking snobs. Yes, of course i'd want the best for my kids, & I want them to have a good education - but I didn't make my money slagging the those institutions that I'd eventually be sending them too. Some joined up thinking, please!

  • @Sylaq I think you are jealous of the rich.

  • @Sylaq well said! Its really only common sense!

  • @Sylaq who says posh schools are best for your kids ?- weller went to an ordinary school and look what he achieved- posh schools just teach your kids to be posh twats! the fact weller sent his kid to a posh school shows he forgot his own lessons- and yes most likely his kid is a posh twat-!

  • @platuner So, do you consider Paul Weller's son, who was born into wealth and went to a posh school to be a "rich twat" as well? I'm trying to understand some of the 'socalist logic' I'm hearing on these Eton Rifle videos.

  • Takes me back to a more inocent time of class war and violence. Although I came from a very respectible comp whenever we played the private schools we got raped. Anyone else have to do the tunnel at the end of the game where you had to clap the other team.

  • Wellers a genius and still doing well for an old bugger but i wish hed get a haircut lose some weight and stop fake tanning - he really looks a mess these days- he really aged the last 6-7 years- all that smoking and drinking has caught up with him- hes still a legend but i almost cringe when i see him now- he looks haggard though his shows are still great. When i see this it doesnt even look remotely like him- the man had it all and the Jam were easily one of englands best bands

  • David Cameron, what a tool.

  • The Bass on this recording is SO prominent! I LOVE IT!

  • There has to be one!!

  • Where are they now "Dave" is our PM?

  • now this is proper music

  • WTF IS THIS RELIGION BULLSHITE BEFORE THE SONG FUCK ALL THEISM,YOU GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES FOR THE SUPERMAN IN THE SKY I NEVER WILL, AND THE JAM STILL THE BEST BRITISH BAND EVER.

  • NOBODY! is allowed to like the Jonas Brothers and the Jam... that would that be considered a "crime against nature".

  • search Spiders-where does this leave us now

rickenbackers and the jam sound for 2011

  • @suggswashere Why do I see that fucking band being plugged on every video I go on?

  • i wish it could go back to 1979 again,

  • Slough's greatest achievement...

    WOO SLOUGHERS!

  • Can't believe Cameron said this was one of his favourite songs. The fact that he's 'running' our Country and then clearly missed the obvious point of this song scares me, how stupid can he be?

  • @LauraMJJ88 I think he should be able to like whatever song he wants. Music shouldn't be limited to people. Frankly I'd rather he liked this than Justin Bieber or something

  • @bigpimpin110011 Nah, he's not worthy of liking the Jam, or even Bieber...

  • @LauraMJJ88 it's pretentious and completely stupid to say that

  • Comment removed

  • @LauraMJJ88 not necesarily running more ruining our country

    fucking thatcherist party :)

  • @xinsaneox Haha, very true!

  • If he sent his kids to the fancy school then fine, maybe there will be a couple people with actual brains in attendance having been raised properly by an intelligent father.

  • my friend is sitting next to me listening to shitty justin bieber.

its quite amusing... he is shocking.

its even clearer when you listen to the jam and how great they were.

  • i <3 the way people think the jam are the kings of the mods

    morons :D

  • @QuikWire and who do you think they are out of interest?

  • @fronoc

they jam were a rocker band when they came out, back when it was mods and rocks the jam were classed as a rocker band

  • @QuikWire Thats understandable

  • mi generacion es una mierda!!

ya no hay talento pero bueno si hay excepsiones pero en realidad ya no tienen imaginacion los artistas de hoy! la verdad):

  • Haha That miming is awfull... but even watching these guys just onstage inspires me :)

  • What chance have you got against a tie and a crest? Priceless :) :) Never thought of trying the corporate game as it always thought of trying me first :(

  • SLOUGH!

  • love the jam, one of the best bands ever

  • the jonas brothers ? FFS they could not even walk in the same sun as the jam. there not in there league.

  • @who8allthepies The likliness of Jonas Brothers being even the TINIEST bit to the Jam, is as likly as Havenet and Waterloo winning the Championss League, For Starters, They're American, You gotta have the British passion to be like Weller & The Jam. I'm proud to say I'm British, Better Music. Better Life style, Better Armed Forces, and we got a musch, much better society (please don't mention the Riots =] ).

  • Absolute brilliant band The Jam........I was a teenager when this was out, and loved their music....thanks for posting TheJamVEVO

  • vevo is shit, i don't want advertisment, i want to listen to the jam!!

  • Classic. The man had something to say. Made my youth this band did. The poet of his age.

  • A little ditty I compos[t]ed foer Boris Fado fado

  • Very good!!!!!!!!

  • click on the google ads and tell them EXACTLY what you think about those annoying ads - pass it on

  • it wasn't the school they were at, but their attitude that the songs about, everyone wants he best for their kidsdon't they, but you don't want them to be arseholes!

  • So poignant with what happened today with all that lot...

  • Top of the pops.... deprived people of potentially amazing live sets for too long!! UGH!!!!!

  • Fighting music..........

  • the voice of a generation , prophetic song. Look around the flies may have changed but the shit is still the same.

  • foxton sends his son to eton, weller sent his kids to private school, these socialists , red wedge wanted a hardline socialist state until of course they become millionaires and then well start acting like tories

  • @brollytom Oh yes, it's of course a stupid thing they want their kids to have a good education. If you could give your children an education like that, you would as well!

  • @brollytom Paul Weller sent his kids to New End in Hampstead and I saw him everyday coming out of his green mini mate, Jamie Weller was in the other class to me.....

  • I'm 17 and can't think of a more insprirational musician than Paul Weller. Funny how tunes from over 30 years ago are still going strong... unforgettable in fact. unlike the shi**y tunes that shi**y singers sing now. I blame the likes of Simon Cowell who have ruined the music industry so f**k the system type of bands don't stand a chance... makes me sick, i wish i was around in the 70's for gods sake.

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK but you weren't and you never will be "around in the 70s" so why don't you stop bitching and get on with your life

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK My dad was told the same thing by my grandparents about the jam.

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK Always said I was born 25 years too late mate! Would have loved to have heard this stuff come out in the mainstream back then. Bopping along to Eton Rifles or Down in the Tubestation while getting ready for an afternoon on the terraces at football!!

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK I lived through this and believe me things were no different then. The music industry has always beeen manipulated by men out to make money with no interest in real music. Look around you, find your own heroes and support them. I went to see Biffy Clyro twice last year and for my money they are as good as anybody I've seen in the last 30 odd years.

  • Comment removed

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK Music is falling down the hill, but you wouldnt want to live in the 70's

Everyone was Poor, Laws were stricter, and Now we have a lot of Technology and things that we Appreciete.

You should be Glad you are in the 2000's

  • @F34RGAMES I'm not, I don't like the 2000's I wanna play Pong.....LOL

  • @TMKRAMBOTMK Ignore the negative remarks, I was 17 when The Jam released this song, I saw them on Top Of The Pops and I saw other bands of the time (obviously).

In the 70's we were stuck with crappy disco music ( look up disco duck which got to numb 1 in the charts) then suddenly in '79 punk came on the scene, the Sex Pistols we'd never seen anything like it, then Gary Numan, Blondie, The Jam etc came about. What youth today needs is a music revolution :)

  • that is some good lip synching

  • I Play this In the car on the School Run My Kids sing along,. They also sing along to all my Northren soul tunes as well How sad Am I LOL LOL

  • I like the guy in the corner doing really enthusiastic dancing at 1:23

  • Comment removed

  • "What chance have you got against a tie and a crest?" No wonder this is one of our Old Etonian Prime Minister`s fave songs...as Paul Weller says "What bit, exactly, doesn`t he get ???"

  • this could be as relevent now as it was in the eighties

  • Do you kids, Understand the word Class, Think again before you put your earphones and listen to your brain dead shit!

  • classic, i always thought it was eating trifles lol

  • @funkycat06 yeah me 2 lol

  • don't swear, the jam are better than that.

  • Hold's a place In my heart both this song and most other jam songs... sheer brilliance!

  • boss song! the jam are ace, shame weller doesn't play their stuff at his gigs anymore, then i'd actually go and see him lol, his solo stuff is average at best!

  • @seafortha

he did this year. mostly his solo stuff but done going underground, and thats entertainment. and another

  • @seafortha Wild Wood is widely regarded as one of the best acoustic songs ever written

  • @iseabbv yeah it's an alright tune, but abit over-rated, and doesn't compare to most jam songs

  • fucking amazing

  • Spock!

  • Paul Weller's Dad Rocks.

  • one of their best!

  • The Jam are one of Englands gems just like The Beatles : D

amazing band and an amazing song!!!

  • @bilbomusician a trio of brilliance. quality play in every song, i wish i was older. im gonna start listening to the jam, the police, and other old bands more. just an idea

  • i think this tunes banging still

  • Too bad this isn't a live performance.

  • Wellers not a two faced cunt. He wants what is best for his off spring. Drugs, knifing, bro' bullying, muggings were all the rage in the 70's in Hackney, I'd be fucked if I wouldn't do the same. Weller made some top class tunes that stand the test of time, unlike the shit cunt loving crap in the charts today...Come On England

  • @pinkandjefflynne I agree with your comment. He spoke of what he knew and there's nothing wrong with wanting his children to have a better living environment than he did. People change, you all have to remember he was in his late teens early 20s when he wrote this so it's no surprise his ideals may have changed or the world simply changed in the 30+ years since he wrote this.

  • @pinkandjefflynne can you stop swearing i find it very offensive and it upsets me you stupid cunt
