It's rather pathetic that they made them lip-sync this. I love the Jam more than I ever did, and this song is incredible, but the dumb lip-synced vocals ruins the performance for me.
if i remember right this song is about eton pupils joining up to help the police crack some heads during the great strike sometime during the 20s i believe.
Yeah, the whole story is he read a newspaper article that a bunch of Eton Officer Training Corps cadets (called "Eton's Rifles" in the song) were, as you said, jeering unemployed and working class workers marching in a protest, so a bunch of the marchers went to teach the cadets a lesson, but unfortunately found that "All that rugby puts hairs on your chest" and ended up getting beaten up by the outnumbered Etonians instead.
The craft of song writing has largely been lost because X factor and Simon Cowell inspired types simply have nothing relevant to say, they've become TOO polished. anybody can have a number one single if you throw enough money at marketing the damn product and that's my problem it's not passionate or emotional it's PRODUCED and targeted at a deomgraphic
@kerumble i know he was in his late teens when he wrote Going Underground, think he was about 22-23 wen he wrote this! He is a god in the music bizz,a well respected (and rightly so) musician.
I'm sorry, maybe it doesn't matter how old I am, but I wish I'd been around to see bands like the Jam/Clash/Members live; no matter how many revival tours they do, it won't be the same:/
Newsflash: Nobody gives a fuck what your age is. There's still decent music out there, you just have to look for it. Look deep into current music scenes and you'll find witty, poignant lyrics, fantastic bass riffs and solid vocals.
Yes, we get that you've decided you dislike the mainstream way, posting your age and expecting adoration from old mods is laudable though. Grow a pair and look deeper. You weren't "born in the wrong decade" make this decade your own.
@jenssalumae2 Difference is before the 90's you didn't have to look for decent music, it came to you. We had New wave, Mod, Ska, Rockabilly and New Romantics in the 80's, we didn't have to go looking for good music, it came to us. I feel sorry for younger people today, all they get is songs about having sex, it's a shame.
@CarsChicksHaribo Well I suppose being buggered to within an inch of one's life after Divinity Lessons by the Latin Master has to have its compensations. One may be poor and without status but at least one's rectum doesn't hang out like a burst balloon
im 13 and i love this song but i also think that some of the songs today are quite good ... but theres more good songs and bands from the 80's and stuff ... like madness :D
@Sylaq socialists don't hate the rich just because they are rich. Socialists hate the system that we have grown to accept in which those who have money seemingly having more rights than those without. Yes Paul Weller sent his kid to a posh school. He wanted the best for his kid of course he did, the values Socialism dont imply that the rich do not have a right to send their kids to the best education possible, only that those who are not rich have the right to the same quality of education also.
Some of the garbage written on here is so badly thought out an really just hateful mainly it seems towards the most vulnerable . Perhaps this is the price were paying for the Eton rifles......Eton rifles!
The hypocrisy from you pseudo socalists is beyond parody. In one instance you're agreeing with the song's sentiments of "class-struggle" & how Thatcher made millions unemployed, & then in the next breadth you're having a go at "unemployed chavs", like a bunch of fucking snobs. Yes, of course i'd want the best for my kids, & I want them to have a good education - but I didn't make my money slagging the those institutions that I'd eventually be sending them too. Some joined up thinking, please!
@Sylaq who says posh schools are best for your kids ?- weller went to an ordinary school and look what he achieved- posh schools just teach your kids to be posh twats! the fact weller sent his kid to a posh school shows he forgot his own lessons- and yes most likely his kid is a posh twat-!
@platuner So, do you consider Paul Weller's son, who was born into wealth and went to a posh school to be a "rich twat" as well? I'm trying to understand some of the 'socalist logic' I'm hearing on these Eton Rifle videos.
Takes me back to a more inocent time of class war and violence. Although I came from a very respectible comp whenever we played the private schools we got raped. Anyone else have to do the tunnel at the end of the game where you had to clap the other team.
Wellers a genius and still doing well for an old bugger but i wish hed get a haircut lose some weight and stop fake tanning - he really looks a mess these days- he really aged the last 6-7 years- all that smoking and drinking has caught up with him- hes still a legend but i almost cringe when i see him now- he looks haggard though his shows are still great. When i see this it doesnt even look remotely like him- the man had it all and the Jam were easily one of englands best bands
WTF IS THIS RELIGION BULLSHITE BEFORE THE SONG FUCK ALL THEISM,YOU GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES FOR THE SUPERMAN IN THE SKY I NEVER WILL, AND THE JAM STILL THE BEST BRITISH BAND EVER.
Can't believe Cameron said this was one of his favourite songs. The fact that he's 'running' our Country and then clearly missed the obvious point of this song scares me, how stupid can he be?
@LauraMJJ88 I think he should be able to like whatever song he wants. Music shouldn't be limited to people. Frankly I'd rather he liked this than Justin Bieber or something
If he sent his kids to the fancy school then fine, maybe there will be a couple people with actual brains in attendance having been raised properly by an intelligent father.
What chance have you got against a tie and a crest? Priceless :) :) Never thought of trying the corporate game as it always thought of trying me first :(
@who8allthepies The likliness of Jonas Brothers being even the TINIEST bit to the Jam, is as likly as Havenet and Waterloo winning the Championss League, For Starters, They're American, You gotta have the British passion to be like Weller & The Jam. I'm proud to say I'm British, Better Music. Better Life style, Better Armed Forces, and we got a musch, much better society (please don't mention the Riots =] ).
it wasn't the school they were at, but their attitude that the songs about, everyone wants he best for their kidsdon't they, but you don't want them to be arseholes!

@brollytom Oh yes, it's of course a stupid thing they want their kids to have a good education. If you could give your children an education like that, you would as well!
@brollytom Paul Weller sent his kids to New End in Hampstead and I saw him everyday coming out of his green mini mate, Jamie Weller was in the other class to me.....
I'm 17 and can't think of a more insprirational musician than Paul Weller. Funny how tunes from over 30 years ago are still going strong... unforgettable in fact. unlike the shi**y tunes that shi**y singers sing now. I blame the likes of Simon Cowell who have ruined the music industry so f**k the system type of bands don't stand a chance... makes me sick, i wish i was around in the 70's for gods sake.
@TMKRAMBOTMK Always said I was born 25 years too late mate! Would have loved to have heard this stuff come out in the mainstream back then. Bopping along to Eton Rifles or Down in the Tubestation while getting ready for an afternoon on the terraces at football!!
@TMKRAMBOTMK I lived through this and believe me things were no different then. The music industry has always beeen manipulated by men out to make money with no interest in real music. Look around you, find your own heroes and support them. I went to see Biffy Clyro twice last year and for my money they are as good as anybody I've seen in the last 30 odd years.
@TMKRAMBOTMK Ignore the negative remarks, I was 17 when The Jam released this song, I saw them on Top Of The Pops and I saw other bands of the time (obviously).
In the 70's we were stuck with crappy disco music ( look up disco duck which got to numb 1 in the charts) then suddenly in '79 punk came on the scene, the Sex Pistols we'd never seen anything like it, then Gary Numan, Blondie, The Jam etc came about. What youth today needs is a music revolution :)
"What chance have you got against a tie and a crest?" No wonder this is one of our Old Etonian Prime Minister`s fave songs...as Paul Weller says "What bit, exactly, doesn`t he get ???"
boss song! the jam are ace, shame weller doesn't play their stuff at his gigs anymore, then i'd actually go and see him lol, his solo stuff is average at best!
@bilbomusician a trio of brilliance. quality play in every song, i wish i was older. im gonna start listening to the jam, the police, and other old bands more. just an idea
Wellers not a two faced cunt. He wants what is best for his off spring. Drugs, knifing, bro' bullying, muggings were all the rage in the 70's in Hackney, I'd be fucked if I wouldn't do the same. Weller made some top class tunes that stand the test of time, unlike the shit cunt loving crap in the charts today...Come On England
@pinkandjefflynne I agree with your comment. He spoke of what he knew and there's nothing wrong with wanting his children to have a better living environment than he did. People change, you all have to remember he was in his late teens early 20s when he wrote this so it's no surprise his ideals may have changed or the world simply changed in the 30+ years since he wrote this.

I blame the likes of Simon Cowell who have ruined the music industry so f**k the system type of bands don't stand a chance... makes me sick, i wish i was around in the 70's for gods sake.

@TMKRAMBOTMK but you weren't and you never will be "around in the 70s" so why don't you stop bitching and get on with your life

@TMKRAMBOTMK My dad was told the same thing by my grandparents about the jam.

Wellers not a two faced cunt. He wants what is best for his off spring. Drugs, knifing, bro' bullying, muggings were all the rage in the 70's in Hackney, I'd be fucked if I wouldn't do the same. Weller made some top class tunes that stand the test of time, unlike the shit cunt loving crap in the charts today...Come On England
pinkandjefflynne 1 year ago 63
@pinkandjefflynne I agree with your comment. He spoke of what he knew and there's nothing wrong with wanting his children to have a better living environment than he did. People change, you all have to remember he was in his late teens early 20s when he wrote this so it's no surprise his ideals may have changed or the world simply changed in the 30+ years since he wrote this.
