I think the Crowes are stylistcally closest to the Stones in the 70ies. Mainly because of their Open G tuning style they use very often. Keef Richards cultivated that after he has learned it from Ry Cooder. Crowes really are worthy successors of the 70ies Stones
ElHeffay1974, I have nothing against Johnny Colt as he played great on those early albums, but he can't hold a candle to Sven on bass. Sven makes him sound elementary. As good as Colt/Gorman was, Pipien/Gorman blows them away. If you haven't seen them live in the past 5 years, you've got to try before the end of this tour and they go on hiatus.
I'm a big fan of the Crowes but this Album, "Warpaint" stands out for me....it's just full of catchy grooves and funky guitar and some of Chris' best writing and melody making. Vocally. he's as soulful and expressive as anything he had done prior....just my opinion.
Oh, I'm not sure if they sound tighter. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is still probably the best album they put out from start to finish and they were incredibly tight. Marc Ford is one of the most under rated guitarists and Johnny Colt was a dynamic bass player. That rhythm section with Steve Gorman was the best in the business at one time (I remember a Stone Gossard/Jeff Ament interview stating that Colt/Gorman was off the chart and sick).
ive been watching alot of these recent black crowes vids and....man im thinkin chris has been totally inspired by led zeppelin...unless im missing something.
In the 60's there was a cool Mod band Small Faces with Marriott on vocal but in 69 he left and formed Humble Pie, remaining band members teamed up with Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart and became The Faces.
These two bands are IMHO stylistically closer to The Crowes than Led Zeppelin.
I would include also influences like Allman Bros. Band, The Band, of course Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd... even they have made a cover of The Velvet Undergrond 'Oh Sweet Nuthing' sometimes. I love this band, they have collected during years the music of the best 60's and 70's goups to make their own style
It looks like it, they all have beards now, even Gorman, they went from hippies to lumberjacks, but I love those guys, my first concert ever was these guys, seeing them again on September 18th
Peace brothers ! I didn't know they are still playing !!! They are very good musicians, since first album with song Hard to Handle. ( As I remeber it was in 1990 ) It's shame that currently is hard to find realy good rock bands. Respect brothers !!! I like Orson too.
That is very true. My wife and I (28 years old respectively) have seen them 5 times since 05 in 4 different states. She was a Christian rock fan prior, but now she loves the Crowes like me. I used to think the Stones were the greatest live band ever having seen them 4 times. They were great, but I think the Crowes take the cake live..........
All this talk of who's best and who's not is tiring me out, folks. Derek Trucks is as good as it gets, and he and Luther enjoy playing together, as does Derek and Eric Clapton, who loved playing with Duane Allman, who I saw play with Jerry Garcia kin 1970, who would play with ANYONE. Get it? The guitar gods could give a shit about the comparisons, they just want to play music, and if they can get along on stage, maybe we can get along in the mosh pit. Dig it?
you forget that guys like eric clapton and jimmy page are still alive...even guys like the edge are definitely superior, although luther owned warpaint for sure
Im a huge Marc Ford fan, but Luther is quite simply one of the best electric slide players of our generation, and brings some fresh blood to an already beautiful group of substantial musicians. Id love to see Marc and Eddie back, but Ill stand behind Luther.
What Marc brought to the table was a LEAD guitarist. Luther is killer but Rich can handle slide duties. Kinda like the Stones with Mick Taylor and Keith. Marc played the standard tuning solos and Rich held the groove down and did slide. Two of the same guitarist wont work in the long run because they do a similar thing. The Black Crowes are Rich's, Chris's and Steve's band...Rich won't play second fiddle for long unless he is paired with a great lead guitarist.
Best Stones=Keith Richards+Mick Taylor...Best Crowes=Rich Robinson+Marc Ford...Both combinations equal my favotite albums ever. Exile on Main St...Stones and Southern Harmony and Musical Companion...Crowes. Sticky Fingers...Stones and Amorica...Crowes, are close to 2nd place. My opinion might suck but I am allowed to have one...CHEERS!
Comparing Marc and Luther isn't fair, because so much has to do with the quality of material Chris and Rich bring to the table, and how well one guitarist fits into what the Robinson's are trying to do. Marc and Luther are impossible to judge by themselves in this scenario; they are one piece to a greater puzzle. Both are great players. The work the Crowes did with Marc is superb, as is the Warpaint stuff with Luther. I love that the Crowes have stayed so good over the years.
I don't think Marc would want to participate in this tune--some have suggested he IS the wounded bird. Makes sense--and you may want to have your wind tested further--no better live act available, sir.
I just saw these guys last night in Detroit. Let me tell you, what a SHOW! These guys are the real deal!
If you watch close at 3:37, the bass player plays the wrong note but quickly recovers. These guys are real, warts and all, even if the warts are almost non existent. I highly recommend going to see these guys play live!
holy shit that with be a fantastic show....4x this month SWEET!!! Seen them 4x over the summer and catching them on the 21st at the Palladium in Dallas which will be 15 shows total! Love me some Crowes! Damn it man, I sure miss ED....dude.... there IS NO OTHER! and MARC.. man... but know this... Amorica is excellent. Three Snakes and One Charm is not talked about much, but it too is a great piece of work. The Robinsons were at their worst for fighting and their drug use was way out of control. Great album.
This is a pretty good track! I haven't listened to much Black Crowes other than Moneymaker way back in the day. I think I had the album that came after that as well...
Great video! Thanks for posting. It's funny to see all the guys with beards. I wonder what's up with that? As a woman, it seems to me like the beards would be extremely hot under stagelights, etc. Especially for poor Steve kicking ass on those drums! This is one kick ass band. I'm loving the new album.
I like the Black Crowes, they're a cool band with a cool sound. They've got that '72 Stones/Exile on Main Street/Tumbling Dice groove NAILED! Awesome.
Wounded Bird is possibly my favourite track on Warpaint, and this performance does the song justice. I can easily imagine the Robinson bros releasing 3 or 4 more excellent albums in the next years. Since Chris released Paper it seems he's much more into this beatlesque sound. Lots of credit to him.
Great performance. Chris is baked:).

Hands down the best pure rock and roll band in America. No contest.

I second that emotion. The Crowes rule, I'm really digging how well Luther is fitting in, this is a great new song. Long live the Crowes.

This is a pretty good track! I haven't listened to much Black Crowes other than Moneymaker way back in the day. I think I had the album that came after that as well...

Not necessarily a bad thing--I love MFF as well, but Luther's got it--in spades.

Awesome.

They just aired this ep last night here in Australia. I was just about to post it.
Long live the Crowes.

Fucking Brilliant - WARPAINT is the shit..
