@ericlepic Well, you're probably right in the long term. In the short term shrinking the military would have catastrophic effects on our economy. There are towns and cities all over the country that survive and thrive because of that money. The town I currently live in is thriving for two reasons: The Air Force base here and the oil boom going on in the state. My town is just one example. There would have to be a transition. It's far more complicated then just cutting the military, sadly.

Closing the bases there, and moving those troops and their families back to bases in the US, would be a great boost for a town like yours (and mine, as I also live near a large military installation). Instead of buying groceries and going shopping in local German markets, for example, those families would be spending their money HERE!

Except that they wouldn't have jobs. They exist as personnel so they can work in Germany. The capacity doesn't exist. Downsizing bases is downsizing personnel. If they have no money and no job here, they will be on the dole which doesn't really help in the long run. If there were demand and jobs in the US at the moment it might be a different story.

You're telling me that if the troops were brought back to the US, they'd be fired instead of just stationed at a few of those bases that were previously on the chopping block? I'm not referring to civil service jobs in Germany; I'm talking about military personnel. I've never heard Ron Paul suggest that the military should be downsized, just that the # of bases in foreign countries should be.

By saying you want to stop the empire building you are by default saying that the military budget will be smaller. He's said this many times. Yes, bases are closed, but not very many of them. Personnel are laid off when that happens. Think about it like this, if a company is closing factories, does it give everybody new jobs in the other factories? Of course not. Our military would be much smaller if the many bases around the world were closed, as they would be closed to save money.

I'm positing that if the 3rd Marine Division, for example, were taken out of Japan and brought home, then if anything, it would mean the expansion of existing bases like Camp Pendleton and Camp Lejeune, which would be a lot cheaper than keeping an entire division supplied thousands of miles away. The military could sustain large cuts to its annual budget, and still retain the majority of its personnel, in my view.

The military has already closed bases in the US that they no longer needed. They wouldn't reopen them just to let people get their jobs. People are discharged regularly when they become redundant. An administrator or security guard on a German base isn't needed on a base in the US. Those jobs are already filled. Would some people get new jobs? Of course. A great many would be discharged though. It's just economics.

I grew up in an Air Force family, on various AF bases, and I'm a former Marine myself, so I know all about "use it or lose it" vis-a-vis annual spending. If a base commander doesn't spend all the money he's been given for a particular year, then next year he'll be given even less money for his base. So, of course he tries to spend it all, and much of it is wasted.
