I know taste in music is very personal, however, my favorites are Ida Red and Cripple Creek.
II never of this group, and on an impulse I downloaded African-American in the Woodpile, and Run African-American Run. Their music was so catchy, I paid little attention to the content. I find the same thing here with these songs. I have read where this band is one of the forefathers of Bluegrass. The music is difficult to stop listening to. Very catchy rhythm.
What was your grandpa's name? Riley Puckett was my dad's first cousin. I've been to Riley's grave and trying to learn all I can about him and the band.
His brother Charlie Whitten also sat in on some sessions with the Skillet Lickers both Mike and Charlie were members of the Hometown Boys before the Skillet Lickers were formed.
Ida Red is just about my favorite old school song. So jazzy. I sure don't blame you for not posting the racial content stuff. My family is from TX and LA - no matter how old the person saying the word, it has no place today. I don't get in a big row with the old timers over it, but its disturbing and unsettling - and should be. Thank you for exercising discretion.
was gid tanner a racist? just using the 'n word' doesn't necessarily make him so, it was just part of common speech back in those days, and not always used in a malicious way.
You make a good point. I understand it perfectly and you are correct. I have known some very good people to use the 'N' word with no malicious intent whatsoever. Yet, it's origins ARE of a derogatory nature with condescending implications.
Was Gid Tanner a racist? I don't know. But, if you'll notice, I said 'racial, not 'racist'.
Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers predate Bill Monroe!

The music you hear is Back Up And Push. But this version is by Gid Tanner. If I'm not mistaken, it was the last recording he made.

There was a band in Georgia that was made up by Gid`s family. I wonder if they`re still playing. During the Nam era.

Gid Tanner..was a typical rural white man back in those times.
It's still like that in some places.
Are they racist? I don't think so. I call it old fashioned.
