  • Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers predate Bill Monroe!

  • That's my favorite version of Cripple Creek. Thanks! Love the Skillet Lickers.

  • @fiddler26

    Thank you, too.

  • That's my favorite version of Cripple Creek.

  • beginning sounds an awful lot like back up and push by bill monroe as i know it. any inputs?

  • @piobaireachdjongleur

The music you hear is Back Up And Push. But this version is by Gid Tanner. If I'm not mistaken, it was the last recording he made.

  • Brilliant stuff

  • @pekalek

Thank you. I agree; this is some great music!

  • There was a band in Georgia that was made up by Gid`s family. I wonder if they`re still playing. During the Nam era.

  • fantastic

    thanks for posting

  • @xTjPx

    Thank you, too!

  • this is great music!!

  • @mmw453

    Yep!

  • I know taste in music is very personal, however, my favorites are Ida Red and Cripple Creek.

II never of this group, and on an impulse I downloaded African-American in the Woodpile, and Run African-American Run. Their music was so catchy, I paid little attention to the content. I find the same thing here with these songs. I have read where this band is one of the forefathers of Bluegrass. The music is difficult to stop listening to. Very catchy rhythm.

    Thanks

  • Thanks, Ed. This IS good music. So good, you can't beat it with a stick.

  • Thanks for posting. I like this alot.

  • neither did allowing great art to pass into the sands of time ever do anything for anyone.

  • Really good to find this song, ida red. thanks for posting iit. (and Big D is a town I know well)

  • Thanks, Karl.

  • Thanks for posting this, My Grandfather was a member of the Skillet Lickers.

  • What was your grandpa's name? Riley Puckett was my dad's first cousin. I've been to Riley's grave and trying to learn all I can about him and the band.

  • Miles (Mike) Edward Whitten.

  • His brother Charlie Whitten also sat in on some sessions with the Skillet Lickers both Mike and Charlie were members of the Hometown Boys before the Skillet Lickers were formed.

  • I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

  • Ida Red is just about my favorite old school song. So jazzy. I sure don't blame you for not posting the racial content stuff. My family is from TX and LA - no matter how old the person saying the word, it has no place today. I don't get in a big row with the old timers over it, but its disturbing and unsettling - and should be. Thank you for exercising discretion.

  • was gid tanner a racist? just using the 'n word' doesn't necessarily make him so, it was just part of common speech back in those days, and not always used in a malicious way.

  • You make a good point. I understand it perfectly and you are correct. I have known some very good people to use the 'N' word with no malicious intent whatsoever. Yet, it's origins ARE of a derogatory nature with condescending implications.

Was Gid Tanner a racist? I don't know. But, if you'll notice, I said 'racial, not 'racist'.

  • Gid Tanner..was a typical rural white man back in those times.

It's still like that in some places.

Are they racist? I don't think so. I call it old fashioned.

  • Intense version of Cripple Creek!

  • Yep. That man can saw a fiddle!

  • These guys inspired some local musicians in my area years ago--that's how I came to appreciate this band and others from this time period.

  • according to chuck berry, ida red was an inspiration to his song maybellene

  • Thanks, Man. That's just what I wanted to hear. You sure know your music!

  • This is probably the best version of John Henry an Ida Red that ive heard

  • the vocals in the background are awesome

  • Yeah, those boys were real cutups. For years, I thought there was a woman singing in the background of 'John Henry'.

  • Ida Red is awesome

  • Glad you like Ida Red. So do I.

    Thanks, Man.

  • Thanks, Johnny,

This music is so good, you can't beat it with a stick!

  • damn good, the best I've heard in awile
