Two of my all-time favorites too. Truly gifted; both could write, sing, not to mention perform and entertain. Thank you so much for posting this; it's a treat to see them back in the day, looking and sounding so good.
Sorry for Gordon on this one, Cash only had so much vocal range so you know whos key they did this in. Sure took away form Lightfoots beautiful way of carrying notes, you see him try and do it hear but he cannot in this key.
It's just like they sat down and started jammin. Absolutely beautiful. I could dream that they did this in my living room, except that no musicians anywhere near their class ever set foot in there.
That was absolutely beautiful. An American and a Canadian together doing a unified tune--very North American country! Great stuff! Johnny, we miss you here in Canada. Gord, you're legend!
This is so rare...Gordon Lightfoot harmonizing to his own song! Notice how they dropped the key to accommodate Johnny Cash...in this key, Lightfoot can't get the low notes at the end of the verse.
both these men have inimitable, center-stage voices and unbounded spiritual energy! really hard to occupy one space at the same time, even a musical space ~
i would have liked to see more collaboration between johnny and gordon; if they could have managed a blend it would have been phenomenal ~
I have to admit I was never a big fan of the music J.C. sang although I loved his vocals & musicianship. However, hearing him singing with G.L. gives me an entirely new appreciation for J.C. This was extraordinary. Thanks for posting.
More of the same we lost a great gentleman, mentor and ambasador to music when Mr Cash passed away. People forget that he sang with everyone and he took songs and made them his own. Just listen to the song Hurt.
Gorden and John I sure would enjoy and hour by the campfire listen to those 2 on Guitar.
These postmodernist days (2009), in a national variety show (if such a thing still exists), could any two current Gen-X or Millenial males sit down and play & sing with this combination of authority, dignity, yet relaxed, but tasteful humor--on prime-time TV? Kids, go ahead and give me their names.... You can't touch Gordon and Johnny, kids....Current male vocalists (girly men with squeaky voices) scurry in the shadows of these older masculine giants....
@bboucharde awesome comment i wish i would have said it,but i will add a byline line.... you give any two of these "brady bunch'' pop singers a guitar and they would probably try to blow into it,and i dont think they could even write their names, let alone a song and what would their singing sound like without an engineer and a mixing board 2 blocks long!?
Would someone like you be able to sit down at his computer and write such a comment if it weren't for the present moment and its technological advances that allow you to relive memories?
Read my comment again, and think about it. I made no criticism of modern communication technology. "Postmodernist" refers to values, not communication hardware and software. Also, the fundamental physics and engineering knowledge that have given us the Internet were developed decades ago, for the military. Look up DARPA.
Yeah, even though I don't care for jargon, actually I know what postmodernism is, thanks. You wrote, "These postmodernists days (2009)..." In other words, you were talking about the current time period. Behind your jargon, age-ism, and sexism, you were whining about how things today aren't as good as the old days, and I addressed that. It's all up to you if you want to live in the past. Go ahead.
Thanks. I will enjoy 1972, the year when US living standards (in real, inflation-adjusted terms) peaked. 1972: No HIV, no Herpes, no anything that one visit to a doc wouldn't resolve. Plus, the US had roughly twice the factories that it has now. Huge areas of California, NV, & Arizona were not paved over like now. Phones worked better, women looked better, and gasoline was 35 cents per gallon (about $1.20 in current terms). Yeah, I am getting in the time machine now!
I love their casual mastery of their craft . . . they must've had it tuned down for Cash, but then it was too low for Lightfoot. So in the second verse when Lightfoot says he can't do it (the last line of the verse), Cash picked it right up and neither of them even missed a beat! They may both be icons . . . and in the middle of a perfomance . . . but this is a couple of guys with guitars, just having fun making music, trying things out, and enjoying the company. Fantastic!
Two of my all time favourites. Back in the day, my young twenties, sittin' with my dear friends we'd enjoy a taste of this and that on an autumn night and listen to true greats like these two. Miss you "JC".
And long may you run, Gordon Lightfoot, our Canadian friend and neighbor.
And there should be again TV like this. Pure, honest, comraderie, and talent. I am glad I saw it.
you said: "fantastic duet! love that corny joke Johnny makes! " i missed it. i heard him say something liker "i got carried away there" but didn't here a joke. please tell where the joke is. this is a great vid.
holy ****, this is great footage. i had the good fortune of seeing Gordo live at my college. his voice and his songs are so much like velvet...loved PP&M's version of this song, but Gordo sings it like he lived it...which he probably did.
Ahhh, yer bringin back sweet memories! I watched Gordon Lightfoot perform on The Johnny Cash Show way back in 1971. He sang Canadian Railroad Trilogy on that episode. I think this Performance is from the same Show. Perhaps someone out there in Computerland can tell me. Thanx. "Gordie" is a true Canadian music ICON !!!
Unbelievable! This is fantastic. I remember watching the Johnny Cash shown when I was just a kid, so this brings back memories from way back when, with none other than Gordon Lightfoot. Keep 'em coming!
