There must be something about the sand at Portmeirion because when the tides out and the top surface has dried a bit and there's a breeze, it behaves exactly like that, trailing across the beach.
The original Rover was a mechanical prop which resembled an iced cake with a blue light on the top and was moved by a go- kart hidden underneath. Unfortunately the driver couldn't see where he was going and was being choked by fumes. The meteorological balloon was a last minute replacement. It was filled with a mixture of air and helium and was pulled on fishing line, sometimes with the shot being printed backwards. Even without the eerie sound effects, this clip still gives me the creeps!
@Lowerthetone1 I remember reading about that; it's funny how some of the most iconic images in media come about as the result of accidents, budgetary constraints, or impracticality.
My younger daughter was afraid to go to be last night so I told her about being afraid of the Rover when I was a kid. For some reason, every time I had a fever, I had the same nightmare of being chased by the rover.
@fharding Absolutely! I remember being five or six years old and watching TV and this weird, white egg thing chasing someone on the beach. And then it repeated like Deja Vu. Very disconcerting for a little boy!

Why did you think a big balloon would stop him?

I was watching the series on IFC recently and when Rover showed up, I had a goosebump flashback to when I was a kid and I was scared all over again!
even though it was just a balloon, it was a pretty effective plot device TO ME...but it needs the roar...

That actually looks awesome. In the days before CGI they couldn't have come up with a better look for Rover. Like a giant white blood cell.

It's hard to imagine now, but Rover scared the shit out of me when I was a little girl

Woah, no joke, me too.
