All of the networks did "theme pieces" like these from the late 70's through the mid-late 80's. But when cable opened up more viewing choices, research showed these kind of (expensive) campaigns, while fun to watch, had little or no effect on viewership. People watched shows, not networks.
@therevphil The actress at :41 is Barbara Cason who was appearing in "CARTER COUNTRY". Her other most significant role was that of Garry Shandling's mother on his self-titled show. In real life, she was married to actor who appeared in everything on American TV for thirty years, Dennis Patrick, until her early death at 61.
@therevphil To reply to my own post, I'll guess the actress at 0:04 is Roz Kelly...wasn't this the year she was all set to become a recurring character on Happy Days ("Fonzie Loves Pinky"), but she and the producers couldn't agree on contract terms, so she left the show?
I miss the network talent ensembles like this. Nowadays, you can't get all the network stars together for a nice little sing along without bankrupting a network. Back then, the stars got up and promoted the hell out of their network because they knew where the check was coming from.
I remember those days well. I was 13 years old at the time. TV is not like it was back then. Now all you mostly see are reality shows and in my mind they really suck. Thanks for posting.
If only I was born 5-10 years earlier! I wasn't born til the end of that year. Tv seemed more entertaining back then, and they look like they're having a great time in this promo. If this were done now, could you even begin to imagine all the drama between the celebs along w/the crazy payouts?? They seemed to be more into teamwork back then
WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TURN TO WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TREASURE THE ONE YOU CAN PLEASURE TO SEE WE'RE THE ONE YOU BELIEVE IN WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE IN A MILLION ABC WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TURN TO WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TURN TO AND SEE WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TURN TO WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE WE'RE THE ONE YOU CAN TURN TO ABC
I'm pretty sure the Mom from happy days is the same actress who is in the Weber grill commercial ( she spanks herself with a spatula). Wonder I'd she was tapping into her disco experience (at least she's not waving her arms around like she's Bern doing rails)
The 70s are the REASON shows are rated now, some played fast and loose the time slots. They finally pushed for "family hours" till 10pm when things needed to be toned down.
Thank you so much for posting this! My father (AKA "Father of the Flying Logo") was ABC's Director of On Air Advertising at this time and produced this campaign.
He was frustrated over finding a theme that include the concept "One" and I suggested adapting the Oak Ridge Boys song. He paid me a $500 finder's fee!
He also held the same position at NBC and CBS at various times and produced many memorable spots for those networks - I have several of them uploaded on You Tube.
Is it sad that I was 4 years-old when ABC used to air this, yet I remember it vividly, because of that damn song?
Until about 1982, ABC owned Tuesday nights. CBS owned Mondays. And ABC did have the rights to finally brag. 1977-1978 was their first #1 season, in ABC's (then) 25 year history.

That being said, family hours don't exsist on network anymore ( they gotta compete with cable).

At 00:18 to 00:23, it's Hal Linden, who at the time was on ABC as the title protagonist in the sitcom, "Barney Miller".

Why can't ABC do these kinda promos? They absolutely rock and I luv to sing along!

They wouldn't have time to air 2-minute promotions like this in the age of 4-minute long commercial breaks.
