@Sasquatch279 You're absolutely right, that even more so these days, without driver or specific hardware support, there will be a struggle to get things working, but my point to these guys, is that any hardware performing server roles, is a server. Regardless of OS, and whether it be a desktop case or a 1u rack mount.
Any room I use to house and run my server collection becomes the server room.
OK, sorry if my comment offended anyone, wasn't really supposed to be like that. Even so, I think the amount of people who agree, out rules the number who don't.
A server is a server is a server. The word is not defined by the hardware, it's defined by the tasks and roles the OS provides in conjunction with the hardware, and It doesn't have to be enterprise class gear to qualify.
Even my internet modem is a server. It serves addresses via dhcp, right?
Is a Dell poweredge running a desktop OS, is a desktop machine, or a server? Obviously, it's NOT a server. Of course, it can do that, if needed.
oh fuck he had a power cut.............. lol oh his server is no longer running. That’s not a server room and that is not a server, its a battered old peace of shit that should now be in a museum. And a server does not have office installed on it. My guess is this is some dude in school who has just installed MS server on his dads pc lol.
Relax everyone, at one time or another everyone considers there first network setup as a grand setup and him installing Windows Server 03 on a Dell is a great practice and learning experience. You can install Office on a Server environment, if you truly understood anything about server environments, you would not response with a stupid comment. Nice little setup, keep up the good work and ignore these idiots. I'm a Cisco Network Engineer, the best practice is hands on experience at times!
i agree my fist server room was my bed room with 2 sun cobalt RAQ servers
now i have a 42U rack with HP IBM and Dell servers
keep it up you will get there
something you can try m8 with ofice installed you can host it over the network so all your comps have it without having to install on all comps give it a try
What's the problem with having office on a server? Perhaps he has thinclients or winterminals that he wants to use office on? Personally I'd use virtualization in that case, however since that computer that he has running w2k server probably isn't powerful enough to run virtual machines, there is nothing wrong with logging into the server to remote access applications - an application server for thin clients or older systems using mstsc , etc
I HAVE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING BUT ACCTUALLY HAVE OTHER COMPUTERS RUNNING ON THE DOMAIN AND MINE IS TOTTALY WIRELESS AND I HAVE 2 WIRELSS ROUTERS TO RUN LAPTOPS ON THE DOMAIN THE DOMAIN CONTROLLER AKA SERVER 2008 ENTERPRISE I HAVE ASSIGNED NETWORK DRIVES MAPPED FOR EVERY USER WHICH IS ABOUT 100 USERS MAPPED ON EACH PC AND ALSO HAVE A WEBSERVER EMAIL AND A WEBSERVER TO ACCESS YOUR INFO FROM YOUR ACCOUNT ON THE SERVER FROM WHEREEVER YOU ARE NOW THATS A FRIGGING SERVER SOFTWARE WISE ANYWAY =[]
@danfratamico I have to agree. Office should not be on there. A Server by default is a seperate machine or a VM that runs a system application. Like a router (pfsense, smoothwall) or a file server (nas) Not a home machine with one hdd in it.
11. a server serves a purpose, what you got there doesn't.
12. server rooms are rooms dedicated to make the correct environment for a server to function at peak efficiency, and what you got is definitively not.
It is a server room. A server room is a room with a server in. So this is a server room! Forgot, you of course have your huge datacentre at your house dont you? Hes just trying to do a bit of learning into the world of computing and for that you cant knock it.
@lukestratton1 I have my Dell servers on a wooden table. They are still servers. Even if the server machine is only a desktop PC, it is still a server if it is being used as a server. Maybe you mean this isn't a Data centre room.
What can I say that hasnt been said already!? Being a Network Engineer for my local county government. I can do nothing but laugh.."Office 2007 installed.......... ...... ... and thats about it"! lol holy cow I figured hed show a domain controller or something along those lines.. :-)

If you think a server is a PC that listens on a port, yes it is a server, and so is everyone's PC. If you think a datacenter is a place to store data, then any HDD is a datacenter. If you think a server is a racked PC running 24/7 with server hardware, a decent OS (not saying that Microsoft is sh*t, but it is), then it's not. @SpNightMare a desktop running server 2008 doing server "things" (DHCP, VMware server, WSUS, Active Directory, file and printer sharing....) can be qualified as a server?
@windowspiratato OP said "My Home Server Room - Data Center" most people would think of a "server room" as a room with many servers, not someone who installed a server OS on one computer...

One crappy windows box is not a data center, and servers do not have firefox or ms office. I have 2 crappy dells running Debian, and a HP DL740 Proliant running Xen. What I have is not a data center.
i know. I hate when people fo this. I have half a setup. Running three Gateway desktops, all with Debian. battery backup and a raid box. that houses about 10TB in data.
Why would you install office on a server? Looks to me its just a kid that couldent find a xp cd so he installed windows server instead. Its not a server just because the operating system says its for servers.
Just a comparison: My Server is located in my cold attic (don't need air conditioning up there) where i never sit at it. If i need anything i do it over TightVNC. I only ever need to access it very rarely via Remote Desktop, TightVNC or Sitting at it. It has NO Office 2007, because i don't need it - I don't sit in front of it all day & It is on a CAT 6A 10-Gigabit network. A server is not something which you sit at all day, if ever.
I do have 10-gigabit. I have CAT6A Cabling around my house but its not being used at 10-gigabit yet because i don't have the switch and cards. Its only being used at 1-gigabit at the moment.
A Domain Controller is a server which has Active Directory installed and processes all of the logins. When you log into a network in: Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 professional or Windows Vista business.etc the computer you are sitting at requests the login from the server. Once authorised it transfers all of your files from the server to a temporary cache on the Workstation you are at and it deletes the cache when you log off. Basicly its the Domain Server which has Active Directory.
Also I don't think he lets the "server" on 24/7.On the other hand, corporations need to let their servers always on in dedicated air-conditioned rooms to reduce problems. Can you image 20 computers running continously in a closed room without air-conditioning?It would be like a big risk for the computers. And this doesn't only happen to America, it happens worldwide (I am not american by the way)
C'mon guys, you can read everything here.people saying "You don't have UPS OMG you will lose everything, this is not a server", other saying "this is a pirate copy.I hope you have not revealed personal info, cause I want to see you in jail"lol. He is just a guy who was interested in trying windows server. I have done so in the past (mostly for windows media services used for streaming audio). He is not a corporation to have a seperate room or to have 5 quad core intel xeon servers.Stop being bad
Because all of the american people shit on the environment.
And that's why America is the country with the highest consumption of oil and energy. And that's why the state of our planet is so bad. Look at the videos of the other "home data centers" on youtube. It's only a waste of energy and natural ressources. Air conditioning, that runs 24/7 to cool down the PCs, that makes me so angry, that senseless waste of energy.
You are probably some fuckin' tree hugger moron who hates computers, like my mom. Do you even realize the importance of data centers? Your youtube account would not exist. Your computer would not exist or that we would still be in the computer age of '98 in Q4 2009. You really should be thankful. You would not be able to watch TV without data centers. All home data centers have a purpose! ALL OF THEM. Well this concludes my triumph. You sir, are a moron.
Also, if you hate data centers (and apparently computers) why are you even looking at these videos? Well, your argument seems to be invalid. Good day, sir. And... Go to hell.
PS. BTW don't even think about talking shit to me because I am portugese. But I live in New Jersey. New Jersey is in America. Also, get an education, motherfucker.
Are you retarded? All operating systems are 'stabe' but in the context of a home. NO pc need to be on 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. He isnt servicing an enterprise so he does not need Server installed.
Lol @ dumb americans. When did i ever say that he CANT do this. Sure he can.... but what is the point. He does not need a server with Windows server on it - it is a waste of money. Your the one crying like a bitch. Not me - please keep your retardness in american - k thanx.
thats a decent server for managing things like files and shit so shutup i have a 280 in my furnace room with 2 1TB drives managing all mmy music! so its allright for people who dont have money flying out their ass :)
"Server room"? You installed 2k3 server, with office, on your desktop. That does not make it a server. You don't touch the console of a server unless you really need to... You just don't get it.
That was the WORST movie ever, you title says "My Home Server Room - Data Center". I cant find something that shows its a server only its has a Win Server OS witch you dont even use as a server.... LAMO. Do you even know what a Server/Data Center is, if u call a Home PC with an Server OS a server that dosent even run server apps... omg..
I got windows server 2003 running on my inspiron 100 with a celeron processor and office on it; not to mention my crt monitor....ahaha...What a JOKE !! ahaha
Nice setup! I am digging the CRT and the wooden server rack. Do you have a stand alone AC unit just for that room? Bet it gets really hot. What about raised floors to run all your fiber!! Nice surround sound for the server too! I am thinking of hooking up some speakers in the server room at work!
looool?!?!? WTF, server room? 1 dell's computer on your desctop. A real server room is not in a home library running on normal computer and a crappy modem
my bedroom-turned-office has 3 real dell servers in it, a 420SC, SC1420 and a new 2950. There's a 10U rack with a 16port dell gigabit switch I got for 60% off RRP. granted this is only temporary as the 1420 just coming out of colocation (in a real datacentre) and the 2950's going into it, but I still just call that room an office.
Your server is just a desktop with Win2k3 on it; i'm not sure if that counts
I'm using the old SC420 and gigabit switch as a great big router for the house, lol.
Another home server lab video with servers equipped with sound cards and enterprise edition server software (you realize the list price on Win2k3 Enterprise is in the thousands of dollars right?). This one gets a bonus for having Office 2007 installed.
although i know its not server room but its cool to own a copy of windows server 2003

I know what 10-gigabit is. Check out my videos if you don't believe me. The blue cables coming into the patch boxes are CAT6A - 10 Gigabit.

what is it a domain controller?
coldironhands1 2 years ago
A Domain Controller is a server which has Active Directory installed and processes all of the logins. When you log into a network in: Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 professional or Windows Vista business.etc the computer you are sitting at requests the login from the server. Once authorised it transfers all of your files from the server to a temporary cache on the Workstation you are at and it deletes the cache when you log off. Basicly its the Domain Server which has Active Directory.

3 Things I've picked up on that really confuse me.
Your running "Enterprise Edition" for 4 machines. Did you really payt for that?
Your running Office 2007 on Server 2003, I know its compatible but In my experiace your asking for trouble.
Server Hardware, it's a desktop PC. Dell Precision my eyes don't decieve me.
If all your doing is file sharing you would have been better off buying a half decent Raid 1 NAS Drive.
Gr33nMamba 2 years ago
Also I don't think he lets the "server" on 24/7.On the other hand, corporations need to let their servers always on in dedicated air-conditioned rooms to reduce problems. Can you image 20 computers running continously in a closed room without air-conditioning?It would be like a big risk for the computers. And this doesn't only happen to America, it happens worldwide (I am not american by the way)
BYE
cbpapi 2 years ago
C'mon guys, you can read everything here.people saying "You don't have UPS OMG you will lose everything, this is not a server", other saying "this is a pirate copy.I hope you have not revealed personal info, cause I want to see you in jail"lol. He is just a guy who was interested in trying windows server. I have done so in the past (mostly for windows media services used for streaming audio). He is not a corporation to have a seperate room or to have 5 quad core intel xeon servers.Stop being bad

what are you a moron? what does it have to do anything with office 2003??
analogfantasy 2 years ago 5
He's talking about Windows Server 2003 Enterprise.
iceflyevents 2 years ago
No shit it is pirated. Windows Server 2k3 Enterprise costs $1000.
sclek2007 2 years ago
Why does he need that?
Because all of the american people shit on the environment.
And that's why America is the country with the highest consumption of oil and energy. And that's why the state of our planet is so bad. Look at the videos of the other "home data centers" on youtube. It's only a waste of energy and natural ressources. Air conditioning, that runs 24/7 to cool down the PCs, that makes me so angry, that senseless waste of energy.

Dude, are you a moron? Jesus Christ...
You sir, are a moron.
agntroboy1995 2 years ago
Also, if you hate data centers (and apparently computers) why are you even looking at these videos? Well, your argument seems to be invalid. Good day, sir. And... Go to hell.
PS. BTW don't even think about talking shit to me because I am portugese. But I live in New Jersey. New Jersey is in America. Also, get an education, motherfucker.

dude, wow. who doesnt want their pc to be stable. if u dont then u are a dumbass.
agntroboy1995 2 years ago
Are you retarded? All operating systems are 'stabe' but in the context of a home. NO pc need to be on 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. He isnt servicing an enterprise so he does not need Server installed.
jimmah55555 2 years ago
it seems to me that you are the retarded one. he can put on a server OS if he wants to.
agntroboy1995 2 years ago
What the fuck is it to you? He can do anything he wants, it's HIS server not yours. How is it hurting you? Quick crying like a little bitch....
RPintorO 2 years ago 3
Lol @ dumb americans. When did i ever say that he CANT do this. Sure he can.... but what is the point. He does not need a server with Windows server on it - it is a waste of money. Your the one crying like a bitch. Not me - please keep your retardness in american - k thanx.

A real server room is not in a home library running on normal computer and a crappy modem
kimiZZZumi 3 years ago 6
so you have a dell dimension 2400 running a server...what a noob. get a real job.
first off, your not running any type of UPS system.
Second your not running any RAID on that because its a 2400 that does not support raid.
third, you have it set up like a work station. you think IT people sit on a server all day?
fourth, how old are you?

matthew376 3 years ago
my bedroom-turned-office has 3 real dell servers in it, a 420SC, SC1420 and a new 2950.
KX36 3 years ago
What the hell? This is nothing like a datacenter...

Another home server lab video with servers equipped with sound cards and enterprise edition server software (you realize the list price on Win2k3 Enterprise is in the thousands of dollars right?). This one gets a bonus for having Office 2007 installed.
