Well she likes to go through some type of vocal tantrums around 8 every night. It only last about 3 or 5 minutes. I do not respond in any way. If you think of anything that may help please let me know.
does there seem to be any reason behind why they do this? is it for attention, or because they are moody animals? or is it merely something they do in the wild as a way of finding mates and they cannot control it? im a psych major and maybe its the doctor in me that sees this and wonders at a solution using training, or if it is something that can even be dealt with through behavior correction.
This is because he is alone. A pair of cockatoos would never make this sounds, because they doesn't feel lonely and Coco is just screaming for you. you are his only social partner and he feels lonely. they are very social and faithful animals!
Does he do that 'clacking'? Peaches will use her beak and feet against the bars of her cage to make this clacking noise she uses to voice her displeasure when the screeching doesn't work on us.
My budgies do it, too. They literally scream me out of bed, knowing that this will make me tend to them. People underestimate how loud these small beings are (and damage hearing and grey your hair). ^^ In all fairness, they belong into the wild and not into our homes.
IMHO I think Cocoa just relishes the thought of spending all day with you. Maybe he just doesn't like being confined in his cage when he can be snuggling with his "mommy"??? Our umbrella cockatoo was also did this when she was put back in her cage after being out all day. They are very social.
my molucann cockatoo dana does the same thing one day we do our tricks and have a grand o time and then he is demon child. but i love him . he screams like hes being killed and no one can be around . thats why alot of people give them up for adoption bc they cant take the squacking they put out. mine even bits and draws blood at times when he wants me to leave him alone . again i lo0ve him and i will do anything for him to live his life out in a family that cares , iam his third owner
i used to live with a friend who's mother had a Cockatoo... it was a evil evil bird, and was in a abusive home before she got it...as such, having the bird out of its cage would result in bloody limbs from claws or bites. BUT THIS NOISE... This noise was heard all day...every day... its maddening, trust me... words can not clearly ever put to power behind what hearing this for hours on end will almost make you willing to do just to get them to shut up.
He needs some hand toys to play with. Like sport water bottle tops. The ones that flip open.
When he screams do not go by the cage. If you do he is smart and this is why he screams! He knows he gets your attention. Ignore the screams even if it takes a long time until he stops. When he stops wait a few minutes and go by the cage.
I have had a Moluccan cockatoo for 18 years, he is quiet all day. When he does occasionally make noise that is when I ignore him.
That's what a water bottle is for. My bird never has to actually get a squirt (though he might get a shot across the bow if he's being particularly stubborn). All I have to do is show him the bottle and he shuts up immediately. This only works if you don't use a squirt bottle to bathe them. Mulder showers with me so the squirt bottle has always been a tool that says "that is not acceptable". He also understands Time-Out, which means he's put in another room with the door closed. That also works.
oh my I was just thinking to myself "I kind of want one of these birds" but Coco sounds as if she's being murdered.... is this an angrey cry or something they just do?
Also want to add for everyone to not forget to turn your volume up COMPLETELY...& it will still not be as loud as these beautiful creatures are in person.
They can permanently hurt your hearing...I have three Scarlet Macaws that relish squealing with delight at me wearing earplugs by times..lol
Toos are EVEN louder!!
Coco is still a darling though...Mr. Hyde or not!! ;O)
@sue345sue I agree,i have experienced the foghorn blast of sound that these beautiful birds make, even my cockatiel can make an ear shattering noise when she wants to,and my friends little senegal bruno can make you wince when he shouts, you can give your birds everything, sometimes they just want to misbehave...I still love my birdies though.
@sue345sue But they are so loving :P and they even like to cuddle true more when they are young but very attention grubbing and not shy about saying it. Birds will be birds thou.
Glad you posted this. Too many uninformed people get these beautiful but oh so needy birds thinking that they have acquired a gentle, quiet little cuddlebug.
The harsh reality is they do scream horribly, destroy all things in reach, poop (a lot) & sometimes bite pieces out of us & leave scars, & can never be tamed completely, as they are & always will be wild animals.
Then they sadly end up being abused, neglected & if lucky, rehomed over & over.
when i was in indonesia i was in a small island and the resort we stayed at have cockatiel who learn to speak by listening to tourist and laugh and he was just a social bird. He's not cage ever ( well i was in the island for 2 months ) not seen him cage. anyways i keep going there every year ; 3 years straight. the last i saw the cockatiel was brought in the city in owners house and since then all the parrot do is scream and being mesirable. i was sad. he lost all the talks and being happy free.
Yeah my Amazon used to make ear piercing screams over and over and there was no way to get her to stop. Leaving the room and even taking her out and holding her did not help. Couldn't figure out what she wanted.
It's ear splitting and sometimes very annoying and has given me headaches. I just leave the room when mine starts doing this and keep her in a central location in the house so it's not heard as badly outside. I keep mine out most of the day except when she's sleepy or makes these annoyingly loud noise. I'm like you, I LOVE my too to death, but it;s these loud sounds and her extremely big messes that I could do without.
if you can find a way to except these things and have the time to be with one, they're amazing birds! Mine is so smart, silly, cute, adorable, and affectionate. She's a great companion. People who subscribe ot my videos love how cute and silly Baby (My U2) is. Next time I get a chance, I'll do a video fo ehr loud screeches and film how big her messes are as well, right before I clean up after her.
i totally agree about birds not being caged, but unfortunately someone brought him to domesticity(don't know if that's a word). I feel that our job is to make him happy and comfy. He yells like that anywhere, shower, cage,my lap (which scares me) so please don't think it's b/c he is in the cage that he is doing this. He is very much in love with me, trust me, and he usually does that yelling because he wants my attention, even if I'm cooking dinner, doing laundry, cleaning, etc...he's very needy.
oh my, again exactly what my parrot does accept billie is alot louder, she gets very angry!! they are lovely but they are very very loud!!! im glad you posted this so people can see exactly how loud they can be so they don't just buy them recklessly
I watch all of your videos and I have a Hahn's Macaw. That little teenie thing can blow my hearing out in two seconds. I'm very glad you posted this so people who are relatively ignorant about parrots and their behavior will see this and rethink having a cute, cuddy 2. Coco is properly cared for in every way and we're seeing the reality of an undomesticated, wild animal. This is just Coco being a Cockatoo! Kisses from me.
I totally agree.... 'toos are extremely loud! I do think I'm one of the weird ones that really enjoys this type of screaming. I wish out U2 screamed more than she does.... most days, she doesn't scream at all. Our Goffin's is more of a screamer but I too, enjoy her screaming.
More videos like this should be posted for prospective owners to be aware of instead of obtaining one of these beautiful birds as pets. They NEED to know what they're getting themselves into!
That is the reason we posted it. Too many people think they are just cuddle birds...but there is certainly another side to them. I will try to post some more.
Cockatoos are often said to be worse than a human newborn child for attention. We had a Goffin for a very brief time but had to give him up due to a prior owner issue. He was quite loud but his aggressive tactics were the final ticket. We have a Congo Grey and he doesn't scream much, just talks AND when he really wants out, he bangs all his food dishes!
Hope YOU feel better. This kind of noise will always seem more annoying when your sick. My Amazon is a real pain in the ass with screaming when she's upset, or wants more attention. I toss a blanket over her when she pulls that. I give her treats when she's nice. Normally she's fine. Late afternoon--cover the ears while she nests!
Yea, we typically get the noise in the morning while getting ready for work (or when I am in the shower...he wants to be with me), when one of us comes home from work (usually the second to come home and finally at night while watching tv...I guess he figures he has not been out enough..go figure. We don't even cover him, because he just pulls the cover off. He gets treats, but eats them when HE wants. He is such a trip.
The joys of temper tamtrums. I have a Grey and a Conure and they like to scream in choir. Does Coco also throw food at you? My Grey is a sharpshooter, lol.
Coco doesn't throw food at us. Each time he starts sqwaking our Grey makes a telephone ringing sound hoping to shut Coco up, but the distraction from Max, the Grey never seems to work. We appreciate him trying to help though. :)
I know, but at what? He has everything he needs. He was with me today for about 4 hours then again I gave him a shower...I guess he wasn't satisfied. Go figure.
Still put him in the tub, and use a spray bottle. If he flaps and flips, he likes it. If he cowers he doesn't like it. I also then groom her by breaking her waxy feather sheaths with my nails. She'll sit for hours. Then she insists on fleaing me all night. I let her most of the time because its a function of birds and their mates.
