  • Funny how some things just never change...

  • this was really the start of the weekend i was 15 in 1964 working buying clothes going to clubs all over the south coast and up west ( at 15 its incedable to think of it) I loved it all will never get that good again. Mod was real working class having fun and looking bloody good and dancing all night BLOCKED TO fuck loverly.

  • @shorelineboy the disco was the best ...

  • how i envied those lucky enough to get into RSG! Funny, looking at the audiences now, maybe not so much.................awww, come on I was envious......!

  • My Mum was on RSG a couple of times. They picked her out at Streatham Locarno. Apparently there is one episode which closes out on a member of the audience and its my mum blowing her bubble gum. I would like to track that episode down. My mum's best friend worked for EMI records in the 60s and suffice to say my Mum had some very interesting records - Jimmy Radcliffe, Invitiations. She told me that Popcorn Wylie - Brand New Man was the first record she bought.

  • @Variotronic09 any idea who guested on the episode, there's a few in circulation but not many

  • @blacflag No unfortunately I don't know who was on it. My Mum is not well at the moment. The chance of her recollecting further is slim. They should really release all these shows in a box set. Is it Dave Clark who still owns all the rights? This material should be fully archived before it is lost. This is about real working class youth culture - the Mods

  • what's the second song? who is the band? anyone know? great little tune. great post

  • @80sVideoLord Its PJ Proby singing Hold Me.

  • What is the second song? Between 0:26-1:45

Is it called, "Let Your Kisses Thrill Me?" Who is singing it? Sounds great.

  • @VlogasaurusFlex I answered my own question. I took what lyrics I could hear to google and found the answer. It is, "Hold Me" by Pj Proby.

  • Everybody was too cool in the 60s.

The 50s were hardcore - people actually danced together. Notice people after the 60s don't even hold hands?

  • Wow!!! The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck ....The Orchids "Gonna make him mine" : Patrick leading the RSG Dancers, and NEXT to him is my ex-girlfriend SUSAN INSOLE ! (Spooky, as she died in a Plane Missing Disaster in 1979 ) And, theres me in the dancing audience, nice and slim, in my MOD Mohair Suit, watching her......Oh Boy , Memories!!!

  • @GEEJAIME I am VERY saddened by your loss. glad you have the clip here to look at..

  • Anybody know what the dance is they're doing to the Ike & Tina Turner song, 'I Can't Believe What You say'?

  • This brought back so many good memories. I was on RSG about 4 or 5 times. Just loved it. Got balled out by the floor manager once for looking bored when Tom Jones was on singing It's Not Unusual (if anybody has got a clip fo that would love to see it).

RSG really did set the weekend off. If my memory serves me right, and I am 60 now so it might not nowadays, but it used to be Batman at 6.30 followed by RSG at 7pm and then suited and booted and out on the Lambretta TV175.

    Ah good days.

  • cool, i have a few shows, i'll try and have a check at the weekend for TJ one, but if not someone else might be able to dig it up.

  • Lucky you, what golden days those must have been...

  • @jtba26 "and I am 60 now so it might not nowadays"

Come on now. That's no age !

  • I am on this. Its clips from various episodes. It was spring 1964

  • It's kind of scary to think that most of the kids in this clip will be grandparents like (like myself!). I loved RSG, it was mandatory for all mods to check out the fashions and the dances before going out at the weekend. It can never be equalled.

  • Yes most of us old MODS are grandparents now but yet I still can remember, very clearly , what it was like to be 16 and watching this on a Friday night then getting suited and booted before getting out into the night to enjoy the music and, of course, the girls....!! Oh to be able to go back in time.....

  • I suppose the thing was, we didn't realise that is was a real ground breaking time of teenage revolution really and that we were really privileged to be part of it. I don't think there will ever be another scene like the Mod scene ever again because we are watched the same TV programmes and listened to the same pirate radio etc etc.

  • Indeed you are right Ann----it is only in retrospect that we can see the wood for the trees. We know now, very clearly, how important the 60's was, both socially and culturally. Having come through a terrible world war with all its privations this very large baby boom generation made a huge impact that resonated throughout the western world.. Of course every teenage generation thinks they are the most important, but the thing was, there were just so many of us and Britain ruled the music world.

  • How cool to see my mum dancing at 6'42"...the one with all her hair piled up who jumps a sec before everyone else...she was only 17, and is now a grandma of 61!!!

  • LOL --- not bad --she would have been just right for me then.....

  • I wish this was in colour! Anyway, although the presenters were fake the audience were the real deal, Mod wise. They were often invited in from real Mod clubs around London and many Mods would tune in to see what the audience were wearing, as would the acts! Many took fashion cues from the audience rather than the other way around. Mods also liked the music though they thought the bits in between, like "fashion updates" naff. This show played a big part in the death of Mod ironically.

  • Ok, now listen up all you young mods...the scene from 2.34,which shows Patrick Kerr, Sandy Sarjeant and the two unknown black guys is probably the coolest imagery of real 60s mod dancing ever captured on British film. The song was commercial but the moves certainly made up for it.Pure brilliance.

  • cock

  • Ace

  • That guy bobbing up and down between 1.38 and 1.42... 'king winds me up.How was he chosen to dance?? If I was there that night I would have decked him.The twat.

  • Actually, the first one is "Sally Go 'Round The Roses."

  • Dave Clark's crowning achievement.

  • Were they just groovy because they were there, or were they there because they were groovy?

  • The Hitchhiker bit is a good one and its done to a great little powerhouse of a tune by the Orchids. Both dance and song work well together. (sure would be nice if someone would post the song in its entirety on YT. even better if it were in stereo.)

  • 5:34 to the end,the dance the couple is leading is called the "hitchhike". "Gonna make him mine" is sung by the Orchids,a schoolgirl group from Coventry. And finally you can see the Beatles and Helen Shapiro in the background.

  • thanks for that....

  • Yeah, I thought I was the only one who noticed that. When the dance line temporarily separates, you can see Helen Shapiro peer out and look, only to be pulled out of the shot by Paul McCartney. Absolutely classic!

  • @dallaskenn At 6:01?

  • One more thing, funny to see people dancing to C'est La Vie when the Pulp Fiction scene is so memorable. Everyone just sort of stands there until one person who can move it shows up at 4:28!

  • They picked these people for the audience because they were wearing trendy fashions, not because they could dance, though asking them to give a sample of their dancing abilities wouldn't have hurt!

  • laugh, i put this together as it's always good to see early clips of the bands but you dont see much of the crowds really. good to see what the day to day fan looks like. they probably could have done with a bit of dance practice first.

  • @sapphiretaurus I know this was 2 years ago, but I have just seen your comment and thought I would respond. Believe it or not there were dance auditions for the 'dancers'. I know because I went, and was selected for a show. Seem to remember the Dave Clark 5 were on. Hey Ho...long time ago....

  • @deedub99 I don't doubt you about that. I saw an interview with people who worked on the show, aired in mid '80s on ITV, where they said they went to clubs and discoteques to find people who were well-dressed and looked like mods, and asked them to be in the audience. Do you remember if the Beatles or the Hollies were there?

  • @sapphiretaurus I don't think either of them were there at the same time as me, sorry. I reckon I am on view around the 19 seconds mark, but it could just be wishful thinking. umskiddy made a reference to Sandy Sargeant, which reminded me that she was a pro dancer, and I remember photographing her, she was kinda halfcast or whatever that should be called nowadays. I did get to sit in the next box to the Beatles at the Albert Hall, when we were all watching Bob Dylan's first concert in London.

  • Thanks ... this is great! I was a mod wannabe back in the early 80's, so it's very cool to see the real thing in action.

  • thankssss ! i love this video !!

I would just like to know what are the main music of this clip. thank you

  • jaynettes - sally dont you go.

    newbeats - bread and butter.

chuck berry - c'est la vie.

and some other stuff....just noticed how blocky this footage is, must be youtube, took these clips from original shows i've had for years.
