Oh, what a lovely voice. Just as clear and bell-like as can be. And the words were clear and understandable. It makes me ache for a lost vocal age and a repertoire that showcased voices such as this.
She is a wonderful singer and stylist. Impeccable diction and a charm that does't cloy. She makes me nostalgic for a time that probably never really existed!
My goodness! Wasn't she pretty! She does these two numbers to a T, especially the second one, a great favourite of mine. She's kind of an English Yvonne Printemps, something I would have thought impossible! Great video.
Not only has Evelyn Laye a lovely voice (love the alliteration), but she has also a fine sense of style for this music. Many great divas have attempted operetta and fallen flat; it's an art of its own. Jeanette MacDonald recorded both songs as well; and Lily Pons, the latter. Galli-Curci should have performed them. Thanks for sharing these little gems, Doug.
Heavens! What memories this evokes. Difficult to be unbiased since this most charming and delightful lady was a regular visitor when we lived in London. Many happy dinner parties are conjured up as well as morning encounters when we were both out shopping and would accidentally meet. Boo without her war-paint. We'd pretend not to have seen each other. Pianist on that record may have been Gordon Whelan - her usual accompanist and also a good friend. Happy days & many amusing anecdotes. Vivian
A lovely woman and singer, with great personal resilience and a bracing sense of humour. She is possibly the only soprano who recorded duets with these three popular tenors from rather different eras - John McCormack, Richard Tauber and Sir Harry Secombe.
Listening to her vocal attributes and seeing her in the portrait you've provided, I can well understand how she would have been a success in the lead of Fall's Dollar Princess.
I have a near-fatal attraction for English lyric theater of that period; what you might call the up-scale version of the English Music Hall. Very pretty lyric singing....most entertaining. My, she was a pretty little thing, wasn't she?
beautiful. thank you.
