  • At 2:16 she states that 20 years ago the average model weighed 8% less than the average woman and today there is a 23% body weight difference and then she says, "women's bodies haven't changed". That isn't true. According to Robert Lustig on Sugar the bitter truth, "we all weigh 25 pounds more today than we did 25 years ago" and that's evident. Of course advertising is making us sick, but it works both ways. Our diets backfire and while some get thinner and thinner, some get bigger.

  • @b451cello I think what she means with "bodies haven't changed" is that the "default" female anatomy hasn't evolved in a significantly different way during those years. People can get fatter or thinner, but that particular build that implies of being extremely slender and boyish, with virtually no hips and no breasts (tough trust Photoshop, implants and padded bras to hide it) is not a build that occurs naturally in a lot of females. (running out of chars cont. in next post)

  • @CelebrenIthil (cont.) Look around you, then all around the world, in art and statues from as far as art goes, anatomy books and other documented images of the female body. Standards of beauty, health and wealth has changed with time and societies and is not the same everywhere, and humans in general have gotten taller than in the past (better nutrition/health) but you get a general idea of how the female body looks in general. Most women in the world will be close to this than the extremes.

  • @CelebrenIthil (cont. again) And that very tall, extremely thin, devoid of (natural) breasts and hips body shape that is being pushed by the media as the ideal to attain, is one of those extremes. It is not given to every woman- far from it if, as Jean tells, it occurs naturally in about only 5%- to ever look like this try as they may. Basic bodily and bone structure can't be changed to reach their ideals no matter how little fat you can take off the frame. Most healthy & thin gals don't get to.

  • Doing my masters thesis on how women interpret contemporary fashion advertising....The information I am coming across is shocking....but will this change and stop advertisers from using thin models, even thought deaths have occurred....sad really.

  • furthemore, about the comments on whether or not people want girls who are curvy or more plump rather than skinny: it's just another box that women are supposed to fit into. girls need to accept their own specific body type and be healthy, instead of trying to push them yet into another popular body type. the video isn't to alienate and condemn those who ARE skinny. it's to encourage those who AREN'T skinny to not starve themselves and, those who ARE skinnier, to make sure they are also healthy.

  • women are not only killing themselves to have a body like Kate Moss or another underweight model. they, at the same time, try to have a body like selma hayek or kim kardashian (sp?). so when i see a comment like "skinny girls are ugly! girls need to get some meat on them bones! girls with curves are better!" it just makes the situation worse. what i take from jean kilbourne is that women are supposed to be curvy and skinny at the same time, to have a completely impossible body.

  • @cowboyslostatsea You're saying this because most people in America are overweight to the point were it has become the standard. You're probably a bitter, lazy fatty, filled with cellulite. Why don't you like slim or athletic individuals. Not all slim people are sick. What happens is that you americans are not used to seing a slim or even a normal weight person. Obesity is far more big than eating disorders. Obesity has become the No. 1 problem in America, not this. Lazy you!

  • @akawhippy

funny, i'm none of those. sorry that my comment apparently went over your head. i thought that i was being clear. what i'm saying is that society, media, or many other things pressure expectations upon women that ESPECIALLY parallel with their image. this especially has to do with weight, and it also works both ways. obesity is a problem, but so is health as a whole. i'm not condemning athletic or slim individuals, i'm actually celebrating it. but only if it's done by their choice.

  • @akawhippy yikes, i ran out of space. i just want to ask you to reread my first two comments again because i really do think you may have missed my point. and if you should reply again, don't reply to these more recent replies with more immature attacks on my body: of all YouTube videos, this one is really not the place. think of more positive things to say than try to make me insecure about my average BMI'd body.

  • @cowboyslostatsea Oh Jesus! I'm so, so sorry, I know I really misinterpreted you comment. I truly apologize. No problem. I thought you were being serious. SORRY. I've read your comment already and I clearly understood it now. So please excuse my misinterpretation, please. From what you said, i got it now. What you're trying to say is that we women are brainwashed to obtain an impossible body just like Barbies: rail thin with Big round boobs. Yeah. It bothers me too. Or how do you feel about it?

  • @akawhippy exactly! if it's not one thing, then it's another. if women aren't starving to become underweight models, then we're supposed to get breast and butt implants. this becomes an absolute oxymoron because, when weight is lost, then boobs and butt are two of the first things to go. we're never told to just have a healthy weight, but to compare ourselves with airbrushed women.

  • @cowboyslostatsea I see. So it starts when a chubby girl is ordered to lose weight by telling her "lose weight, you look like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man" she's gonna lose her ideal big boobs. And the same with a slim girl when she is told to put on some weight because she is flat chested and unhealthy, her boobs will get big but the weight will fluctuate all over her body as well, but again, she won't be lean anymore. Being thin is the equivalent to wanting bigger breasts.

  • @akawhippy that's what i think, but i'm also generalizing women's body types. not everyone's body works the same and that's why health should be promoted more than society's idea of beauty. it shouldn't be about "i'll be pretty when i'm thin," nor "i'll be pretty when i'm thin and have ginormous boobs," nor "i'll be pretty when i'm curvy." it should be about "i need to lose/gain weight to be healthy"

  • @martinishot I seem to recall that Oprah's been on a few diets. You're not exactly an expert on what Oprah's telling women. Sorry that hasn't stopped you from sharing your opinion.

  • @DemonicFigment And you conveniently do not recall that she then would then announce that she does not care anymore and is going to eat what she wants and get bigger than ever.People magazine in the early 90's had that as the cover for example. Her thin chapter lasted what, 1 year? She has yo yo'd up and down and has been on the up for some time.Don't hold your breath waiting for the next Oprah weight loss.Time for everybody to stop using food as a hobby when they are bored or feeling bad.

  • @martinishot Actually, martini, I didn't "conveniently forget." I confess, I don't exactly watch Oprah religiously. It seems, however, that you have never missed an episode. So I defer to your superior knowledge of everything that has ever come out of -- or gone into -- Oprah's mouth.

  • "only one (body type)we every see as acceptable or desirable"" What crap.No Paris runway skinny model looking girl has ever been on the cover of Sports Illustrated or Maxum or Playboy as far as I know.

  • @martinishot You know what? the acceptable and desirable body is a combination of those two: thin with big melons. Like barbie.

  • Im not sure why this is always about women. Im male, and I feel pressure to look like super heros and movie stars. Cut muscles and a six pack. Can we please just be happy with who we are, and the media stop telling everyone how to eat and what to do. Surely we have all seen enough bowflex commercials.

  • @AUTOKANNON It's true that this pressure affects men as well, and that is regrettable. But the argument is easy to make that the pressure on women is greater. Don't expect much sympathy if you can't acknowledge that.

  • Ads with negative messages aren't the only ones responsible for eating disorders and poor self-esteem. What you hear from real people around you (insensitive comments etc) play a big part too =\

  • I saw this in class, at my college. This is a GREAT video! Jean K is womnderful at calling this out! The video is expensive, but I would recommend mothers buy this for their daughters. Its thr truth. It could help mommies also. I have a son, but it would be nice to help him understand what we have dealt with, so not to objectify women himself.

  • It's pretty messed up. I recently cleaned out my garage and found a diary of mine from when I was 11 years old. In the diary I found two pages that were filled with the following quotes: "Fat is evil. I hate fat" "Things to do: Get on a diet and get SKINNY."

Let me tell you, I was 5'3" and had the body of a model.

    It's sick. Really sick.

  • @EYEwantKANDY hahahaha, very good reference sis. It's creepy when you reflect on evidence from the past T_T

  • The thing is that the slim women are not so ..how to say it correctly ?..Hot ? warmer in sex! ..on the other Hand speaking from experience plumper women are THE thing!!!so stop eating this bullshit women!! A woman is hot and feminine as they are! Each woman is pretty on their own way!!! Eat but with measure ;) .. :) LOVE CHUBBY WOMEN! :*

  • So sad that it is the influence girls are being exposed and hope one day every girl will love themselves without worrying about how they look.

  • Umm, most Americans are either overweight or obese. That is a much larger issue than the few who are too thin. I read somewhere that if everyone in the U.S. were to bring their weight down to a healthy level, 33% of the medical expenses in the U.S. would drop. It doesn't seem to be a problem that advertisement is making people worry about their weight...seems to me people need to worry much more about their weight.

  • @darkness88ew look at the magazine stand. Kilborne discusses this: Get thin now! Lose 10 pounds in 10 days! Other cover- ice cream sundays! They are harming womens self-esteem, and for you to minimize what we go through shows your insensitivity. Im only 10 lbs overwieght now, by BMI, but I couldnt get here because of this contradictory industry. I did it when I saw what they are doing to us, when I broke free of their game. by the way, at 10lbs over, I look THIN. So now what? Who set it?

  • Men say that they are pressured by media images as well. It is less frequent, but when they are they are sold images of vitality & strength. Women are sold images of underweight models, an idea of illness and poverty

  • @DanceswithUtube it's also the case, as Jean says in the Killing Us Softly 3 videos, that women are portrayed as passive ('takers', probably originating from the ideas of men and women in sex) while men are 'masculine' - the 'givers', active breadwinners.

  • Yes, totally shaped by media

  • I get to watch this movie for my Anthropology of Food class and I have to say that seeing this 5 min preview is sickening. What a sexist!

  • @BlackHeartMetal666

she was metaphorically speaking. its not a pathogenic disease. its a mental disease thts why ppl cant just snap out of it. and what she said is that the disorder becomes u, it takes over ur personality and ruins everything good about u. turns sweet ppl into empty nothings. and its not just about losing weight. and its harder to get help than u think. i developed one and regret doing so soooooooooooo much and id give anything to have my old self back.

  • What a wonderful video.

  • Men are targetted by advertising just as much as women are, mostly just on different grounds.

Although in terms of physical stature, we are BOTH held to unreasonable standards by advertisers.

Women just seem to be effected by it more since they are also taught that most of their "Worth" lies in their physical appearance. Advertising and marketing is a soul-less game, but ultimately it's the parents who have the responsibility to teach their kids to see past all of this....

  • @BlackHeartMetal666 Agreed. People are doing very little to educate themselves about their health and instead of seeking information they need, they seek information that satisfies them. Kilborne provides the latter, the idea that their misguided attempts of losing weight are blamable on advertisers and not the individals themselves for failing responsible measures to lose weight. Wanting to lose weight and get into shape is a positive thing, blaming others is not for why you're not isn't.

  • Actually no you cant become anorexic or bulimic instead it becomes you.

  • @KyleighBoBiley How? Seriously, I thought that it was a disorder, not a sentient being that possesses people. The U.S. and UK ( I believe) have the highest rate of eating disorders in the world. I know for fact that this is treatable, and yet people categorize it as some pathogenic disease.

  • Who is more likely to perpetrate violent crime upon men? Men or women? There you go. Men commit most of the assault, mayhem, and murder. Period. Since the vast majority of men are heterosexual, females are of course going to be the vast majority of sexual assault victims. Take women out of the equation, such as in prison, and the male-on-male sexual assault stats skyrocket. Men commit most violent crime, like it or lump it. Man-hate? We make ourselves easy targets, don't we?

  • @SweetSweetWaldo Yeah but how are we women making ourselves easy targets for sexual assault?

  • I like this woman's voice. She seems so nice!!

  • smart lady lol

  • wait...marilyn monroe would be considered fat?

    MARILYN FUCKING MONROE!!????

    wow

  • Yes. She would be. I think she was beautiful.

  • yeah, she was actually quite large compared to the women portrayed in advertising today. Its unbelieveable right?

  • marilyn monroe was also an actress and not a model

  • No, she was a model too

  • okay, that is what this woman said. but that is hardly basis for anyone to assume her statement as true. yes, there has been a shift to thinner models (though actually more curvy models like lara stone have become popular), though it was not a result of advertising. and obesity affects far more woman in america than anorexia.

  • Yeah the obesity rate has gone up but also so has the eating disorder and also the eating disorder is starting in younger ages there are even 3 year olds thinking their fat now.. I know one. Its insane. and yes obesity does over rate anorexia but anorexia is far more dangerous. I mean come on they dont have to have thin thin models everyone thinks they're gross they just like to be assholes i mean god look at tyra banks dissing on what the models wear. thats her opinion.

  • @CurlehMustash She is right how people would view Marylin Monroe these days. I read once about how child actresses like Shirlee Temple and Judy Garland would be considered "fat" by the health standards of our times.

  • It's pretty sad and sickening to see some of the video clips on tv these days of women happily objectifying themselves all to get attention and sell records. Some of them are pretty explicit, too.

Perhaps they fail to realize that it's not only their fans that watch their videos but also pervy old men. I also wonder what some of their children think seeing their mothers dry humping guys and doing all sorts of other things in their videos.

    It's disheartening, really.

  • highly doubt some pervy man sits and gets off to rihanna or lady gagas videos.

  • you are joking, right?

  • 2:06

thats just gross ... she looks like a stick ... give me monroe any day

  • Well if it bares no importance, why mention it? The very definition of a cigarette requires it to be small. If you're not an idiot, you don't need its size advertised to you.

It's like describing an orange as "orange". Yeah... we get that from the name. Tell us something useful.

  • The ads don't say that the cigarettes are "small," they say that they are slim, as in, slimmer than ordinary cigarettes. That's why they mention it; not all cigarettes are the same size.

  • Yeah, but there's not going to be a huge difference between them. Seriously... (the ones featured in the video) don't look "slimmer" than regular cigarettes. And it seems like they ALL describe themselves as "slimmer than the rest" these days.

  • well, this video is actually a lot longer. She makes the point later on that models in the 80's used to smoke cigarettes because niccotine decreases your appetite and relieves hunger pains.

Because models were doing it, a lot of other women picked up on this, too. Her point is that the words "sleek" "and "slim" in ciggarette ads have a double meaning of not just the shape of the cigg. but also it speaks to the notion that smoking will help control hunger and mame you thin.

  • Or you're just not very perceptive ?

  • "Look, body image issues are not caused by magazines."

    lol

You must be seriously delusional if you believe that

(and I'm tall and slim, so don't go there)

  • I wish it had subtitles in spanish so I can show it to my classmates :S Anyways, it's really good!

  • I have to say, I think this video is very good. It's short and simple, but very effective. Being a teenager, I have seen my share of videos similar to this, but I like how it tells other people about the dangers, not just preaching at "at-risk" teenage or preteen girls, and even boys. I love how she mentions that most of the models are born with that body shape because it reminds us that very few people can actually look like that. Excellent points.

  • There's no need to be so defensive. It is a well established fact that nowadays around 10% anorexia is in males, but this was not true when this video was made. None of what people are saying is a personal slight against you, so get off your high horse and calm down. And there's no need for the swearing. I have bulimia, too, before you comment on me not knowing anything about this stuff.

  • Why wasn't it true? Anorexia in males isn't a new thing, perhaps just even less reported back when this video was made?

Other than that, great comment! Got me really hot again!

  • You are right; anorexia/bulimia in males is NOT a new thing, but it is certainly more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago. It may be true that it was not reported as often, too, like you say. Only in recent years has advertising depicted men as 'perfect', muscular and toned, while the 'thin' female ideal has been around for much longer.

  • A lot has changed since this was created. Men are far more body obsessed these days than they used to be. Ironically, most of the men I know are more attracted to women with curves.

Oh, a friend of mine worked with Kate Moss, said she was wicked to work with and ate pretty much whatever she wanted to. Kate is not anorexic, just skinny.

  • soooooooooooooooooooooooooo true!

    thanx 4 posting

  • this is very useful and informative , thanks for sharing , i agree with all the points mentioned , ppl need to land back to earth and return to reality , fat is beautiful , slim .. anorexic .. is just gross .

  • While I agree with the film, I do NOT agree with you, indrreee. You said that "slim" is "just gross"? I'm slim. You're calling me gross? You should love and accept ALL healthy body types, not just the one that you have. Body-acceptance means EVERY-BODY.

  • oh im sorry :D i ment like too slim :/ i didnt make it clear enough , apologies

  • I agree, whatever size you are, you should accept people, and even thought this seems unimaginalbe, boys actually develop anorexia too

  • I agree. I'm as tired of seeing all these totally bony models as others, but that doesn't mean we should victimise women who are naturally thin.

  • Indeed not. But it is quite clear to see the difference between an anorexic woman and a 'naturally thin' woman. VERY few women naturally are that thin. It is an advantage to a woman to carry extra fat so she can support a healthy baby. This is WHY women are the shape they are, and, naturally, men are attracted to it.

  • I totally agree with you there, but I was merely pointing out that it's not thin women's fault that their bodies are upheld as the standard right now.

  • I agree. It is the media who've spun up the notion of 'thinness' to be synonymous with beauty, power and success. As you say, naturally thin women just happen to be the unlucky ones who bear the consequences of it all.

  • Just like anorexia is an illness and unhealthy for the body extreme obesity is also unhealthy, so I don't think saying 'fat is beautiful' is quite appropriate. Every body type is beautiful but those who are on the extreme ends of either side to the point that it is unhealthy for them should seek to recitfy that so they can live a healthy and long life.

  • One of the cigarette slogans is 'the slimmest slim'. What a combination, dangerously underweight models and the destructive terror that is tobacco.

  • Marilyn Monroe is so beautiful!! she's thing there. i don't know how they can say that she is 'overweight' or w.e.. she has a body to die for!

  • I understand what you're saying. There should be more emphasis on male disorders as well, because males go through self esteem transformations in their teens just as drastically as some girls do.

I am sorry you are suffering through that, especially as a male, because male symptoms are highly overlooked. Have you ever sought treatment for this disorder? Or have friends and family who are supportive and understanding of the condition?

    Good luck & God Bless!

  • i think that she said that boys dont getting because the video itself is old. And even today the man that suffer from anorexia are a minory. I think is 90% women and 10% men. And she speaks about Kate moss, she is not longer working as a supermodel, she is still famous but she is not on the runways anymore.

  • how old is this video? looks like is from the 90's

  • Shes generalising it anyway, shes saying that MOST boys dont suffer and she will have proved this by survey. You need to calm the fuck down. You dont specialise in this at all seeing as though your 16 years of age.

  • oh my god....give us a break!!

  • I can't decide if u r being serious or if u r just being sarcastic...

  • thnx!!! it does take it to know it, and if we just want to be fucking sexier then just leave us alone about it.

  • This comment is so crap.

If your serious then you have a warped view on life and seriously need to take your head out of your arse and if your joking then do you realise that sufferers of anorexia come on these sites and talk to each other and stupid idiots like you influence them further.

    What a joke YOU are.

  • I think a spring might have come loose in my brain just from trying to read your horrible, broken english.

Maybe if you ate something, you'd be more coherent. 8)

  • "Paris Hilton is naturally very tall"

    She's only 5'8"

  • Am I alone in thinking Marilyn Monroe is WAY prettier than Kate Moss?

  • AndromedaMariaCarmen: you are not alone! Everyone's idea of beauty is certainly different and I think that Moss looks stunted figure-wise: sadly she is not womanly and she has no curves or softness to her like Marilyn did. I was slim not thin before I had children then I filled out, this is the natural order of things and why are we fighting this??? I dated a thin guy in my teens and it was very unsatisfying to me just nothing to hold onto...

  • Today's women models look like spaghetti sticks. I don't find them attractive at all.

  • most guys don't. I wonder who the heck came up with this idea of beauty.

  • Some control freak who hates women.

  • He was probably into little boys too.

  • That wouldn't surprise me.

  • Does anyone happen to know how old this video is? I need to site the date for the report I'm doing.

  • well, actually 1 in a 100 have anorexia. not 1 in 10

  • yeah, because I'm going to believe you, who as far as I know have done no research, over her who does this type of research for a living. Yeah right. Who the hell are you?

  • you can be a smart ass and act all laid back and stuff- but i have a doctor and a dietitionist that i see regulary, because i have ana. and they have givin me the statistics. also, every website that ive been to about ana, have said 1 in 100!!! and for who i am- well im 12 and live with ana. so ya, stop being so concieted.

  • She never says that 1 in 10 people have anorexia, she says 1 in 10 people have an eating disorder. I am certainly willing to believe that both you and she are correct. But people are a lot more likely to believe you when you give them your reason beyond the fact. Cause the way it sounded was that you were just trying to be an ass and discredit someone who is trying to do good things for women. After hearing all you have to say I don't think that was what you were trying to do.

  • you are so so right , it is1 in 100 who have ana, my f.... psychologist also told me about the statistics and everywhere (ana websites)it always says 1 in 100, and btw im 15 and its almost 2 and a half yrs that i've lived with ana

  • she's right.

  • She's quite slim herself, isn't she?

  • that doesn't mean she's anorexic. You can have an eating disorder at any weight- you don't have to be skinny to have one.

  • dont understand the panic here, the Humans in the Western countries become fatter and fatter. Now Acting here like the TV tell us to be thin, is a lie to urself.

Most of us are overweight, even with watching commercials. Get real with yourself People.

  • There is no panic and this womans opinion is not a lie...The concern (and the point she is making) is that the media is setting impossible goals that make the majority of women feel inadequate. This in turn causes eating disorders and the desire to mutilate ones own body through plastic surgery.

If anyone thinks this is a positive way of inspiring the obese to lose weight. Think again.

  • of course your view is not wrong, i mean I work in the Fashion Business. But I can tell you that the most Girls there are Natural Thin and the Goals are not impossible.

I mean I see that Girls in my Work time. And you cant deny that People all over the World become fat. For Germany for Example 51% of the Women and 66% Men are overweight.

So to be realistic fat is more than thin People, but of course to thin is a Problem too.

Look the statistic and i guess you will see.

  • I think hollywood is to blame for a lot of girls and women having eating disorders. Back in the day, women had real bodies. I guess Marilyn Monroe would be considered fat, and she had a great figure in my opinion. Kate Moss does not look sexy to me. She looks like she has AIDS. I can't understand why excessive skinnyness is considered sexy.

  • So true...I can't believe I was once influenced...I'm glad I opened my eyes before I was damaged incurably.

  • "80% of 10 yr old girls on diets" dat is f-in disgustin! the media plays a big part in this whole "slim is beautiful" kinda thing but it has alot to do with girls' self-esteem as well!

I'm a girl & i feel sick wen i see an anorexic girl or just a stick thin girl, i cant see how anyone can find that sexy! i'm 17, bout 5ft1 & weigh bout 6:10, size 8 (6 sumtimes)i dont TRY to b dat weight, i just am, i used to b a chubby baby but i do ALOT of sports. girls just need to realise wot's important!

  • do you know how many people die from starving right now?

  • Look, body image issues are not caused by magazines.

As a young woman I had the culturally ideal body type: tall, fine boned, slender, willowy. I never thought about my weight until girls asked me how I got that way. I felt senseless guilt re my genes.

Prior, I'd tried overeating in the hopes I would grow a bosom. The example of my best friends agony over her D cups at 12 did not deter me from wishing.

Media told us each we were the "ideal" and it did not help us with body image.

  • nice I use this for my education purpose ......thanks for posting this video

  • this is a great speech but I very much disagree with the fact that women's bodies haven't changed in America! It seems the fatter the average American, the skinnier the models are in the magazines.

I'm not for anorexia or obsession with food in the least but encouraging girls to be happy with themselves isn't going to help them escape obesity and heart problems! You are beautiful when you are HEALTHY!

  • Well said!

Perhaps we need to shift from a "how you look" ideal to a "how you perform" ideal.

I hated being judged as "good because you are slim" when it was nothing I had DONE.

But I loved riding, shooting, archery, ballet (it hurt like hell my skinny undeveloped muscles) and martial arts.

I'm old now. When I remember the great moments of my life, I don't remember what size I was or what I wore. I remember how my body felt. How it FELT to be inside that body.

  • she was talking about the body type not the body of a woman. Body type is given by your genes, therefore that did not change!

  • I'd be dead if it weren't for you efforts. Thank you, with all of my heart.

  • Fantastic video! Thanks for uploading this.

What's the song and performer at the beginning of this clip?

  • Annie Lennox - Keep Young & Beautiful

  • whatever happened to the good old days where models could be size 12? Now days you have to have your rib cages sticking through to be considered "attractive".

  • It's not the ribs that are attractive. A very tall, broad shouldered small waisted girl is the best body type for showing off high fashion. She's practically a walking clothes hanger, no body to interfere with the design. People are attracted to the design, and think they are attracted to the girl. But in plain clothes, Levi's and a tee shirt, Paris Hilton types are NOT the favourites. Are they?

  • paris hilton is skinny...not very nice

  • Paris Hilton is naturally very tall, fine boned, and slender. She has developed muscles. Her ribs do not show. There is nothing wrong with the way Paris Hilton looks. She is not painfully thin or unnatural. Now, Jennifer Lopez can never look like that, now would she want to. But don't hate on tall slender girls.

  • She's only 5'8"

  • No disrespect intended. Yes, Paris is tall &gorgeous, has feet so huge she could not buy shoes in a department store, and she is abnormal.

    So am I.

I only wanted to say that girls built like Paris are just that way by nature. Gaining weight would not make them gorgeous lush thick Evas and JLos. It would just make them tall fine boned women with excess fat hanging in all the wrong places.

I know this from youthful experience trying to be full figured. LOL@me!

  • It's so boring too

Overtly skinny is for kids (naturally overtly skinny)

  • @oklapiSome women think its part of their culture to look like GrimaceI call bullshit. No culture at least no culture with access to Ballys, has ever valued fatness. Theres a big difference between a nice ass and thighs that look like the surface of a golf ball and a gut that looks like a broken tube of croissant dough. I couldnt decide which of those was funnier. If that doesnt convince you, think about it like this. Every culture on Earth holds one thing to be true: men are always right.

  • It's dangerous when in countries like U.S. teenagers r getting breast implants; the Dept of Health & Human Services has spelled it out that you cannot breatfeed children with implants! It affects childrens' &(when they become adults) their immune systems, they r 5x more prone to allergies &many studies point to lowered iq or deficient cognitive abilities. &NOW in advertising we ARE SEEING BIG BREASTS EVERYWERE.THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR FUTURE, 4PEOPLE. IT'S SAD,but SURGEONS WILL DO IT ANYWAY FOR $

  • Yes, I agree with you. I am sick of big boobs everywhere! And the surgeons thrive!!!

  • beauty is in us all... found in the imperfections which over rule our bodies. i agree people need to CHALLENGE these impossible expectations placed upon us, however its easier said then done.

  • i agree, im 17 and have been suffering from anorexia nervosa for about 2 years, if only someone could prevent that terrible 'stereotypical' image of the 'perfect woman' from growing in a young girl (and BOYS) mind, /we' all want to be the light feather that a strong breeze could lift in the wind but its simply a battle you cannot win.we cannever reach beauty untill we realise- *nxt message*

  • Isn't it likely that you have issues deeper than wanting to be like the girls in magazines? I'm not saying magazines don't hurt. I remember hours spent trying to get airbrushed makeup and hair looks. But wanting to be a light feather lifted in the wind is NOT a visual, but a physical metaphor. Possibly you want to FEEL differently, not LOOK differently.

  • OK, 11.93% of college women is playing the skeleton gig, but 80% of America is FAT as a hyppo! Let's say 8% is OK. If those poeple would simply THINK, then those "be slim" ads would have no effect on them. I'm afraid if there were ads encouraging people to eat excrements they would happily recycle their own "products" or even buy some premium sh*t.

It just scares me how America acts as a biiig cattle and does whatever the Farmer (=TV) tells them to do...

  • i believe this video is 100% true! in fact,i´m a 16 year old girl and i have been studying this same thing in my IB english class, how the media creates necessities for us,the teenagers, as this industry is so profitable!the diet industry in the US makes 1 billion dollars a year, imagine!girls will never have a perfect body, because a perfect body DOES NOT EXIST!photoshop is used in models as well!

  • Hey, claude! Why don't you go put on your birks and go eat some granola! Maybe you'll chill down a bit!

If ChallengingMedia thinks my comments are out of bounds, they can remove them. Perhaps the channelholder has the ability to speak of these things rationally, something most rad fems can't do.

And, btw, Naomi Wolf got called on her stat that 100K women a year die of EDs. The real number is a fraction of that. OF COURSE any death from an ED is a tragedy, but get the #s straight!

  • It's really sad when a woman who is nearly 40 can't have a discussion without sinking to the condescending and insulting school yard antics that you have employed:

"since you probably got your degree in women's studies, I'll help you out a bit"

"I really hate to tell you this, because I know you probably can't handle it"

"I'll use small words to explain it to your dumb little ass"

"I should surrender my life to listening to sobbing sisters like AnaMiaSucks"

    If you'd like to continue(pt 1)

  • Well, when you get a little older, Ana, hopefully you'll be able to reason better. I mean, when I was 22 I had a pretty self-absorbed view of the world too. Then I grew up.

Re-read your comments and place my comments in context. That will tell a lot. Your pal claude has still yet to provide me with the research to prove her point. Instead, she throws harsh language around guaranteed to stir emotions. That's how radical feminists operate.

  • (part 2) this debate without more of those personal insults I'd be happy to, but since your school yard mentality will probably chalk it up to me being either outwitted by you or afraid of you I doubt you would be able to continue this without sinking to that level again. I wish you well Missy and I hope you learn someday that we are not your enemy and it is not necessary to treat us like we are. I hope you learn to get rid of all that hate and anger inside of you, sweetie. *hugs*

  • So I will end by saying, if ChallengingMedia thinks my comments are so beyond the pale and/or dangerous, they are welcome to remove them. However, if they believe in free speech and welcome differing points of view, I suspect they will not do so.

I wish you well with your recovery, Ana, but I hope that in your recovery you are not exploited by those with hidden agendas.

    Cheers!

  • finally - "radical feminism" is the name for the branch of feminism that focuses on the patriarchy - the idea, currently socially accepted in America, that women are inferior to men and therefore receive second-class treatment. it has nothing to do with hating, destroying, or suppressing men. it has to do with equalizing women. i am a blonde, thin, pretty woman who lives in LA - much against your ignorant stereotypes. i am a radical feminist. you should educate yourself, MissyS.

  • I'm shocked...

Why isn't sociaty doing anything about it?

  • Because they are lulled into the brainwashing....

Media is the (not so) new (now) Religion

  • Good Video anyway~ good point

  • sooo fucked upp

  • lol.. cigarettes are the most deadly of all... :P

  • Yeah, if women can then find the unlucky man that inseminated her, she can reward her unchaste, nation destroying behavior, by child support, or a house payment!

The child should go to those that can afford them, and its not women or the State.

85% of hookers, strippers and criminals come from single mother households.

Save America, end Liberal Marxist Feminism!

  • And how, exactly, do we change these stereotypes?

I can't get enough of these "feel good about yourself...or else!" women. Sure, they want to blame different industries (advertising, modeling, I'm sure pageants are in that mix). Do they offer any real solutions? Do they offer solutions that work? NO.

If the fashion industry would start focusing on the look of real women, athletes, professional women, etc. instead of smack addicts (boycott Burberry), that would be a start.

  • I think just putting out these types of videos helps a lot. It's making people aware of the problem.

  • And just how does "making people aware of the problem" make one anorexic girl eat?

The answer is it doesn't. And when you put some 50-something self-esteem fascist who probably hasn't seen lipstick since 1965 in a video, which is preceisely what a lot of anorexics dread becoming, I can tell you it doesn't help. You want to help anorexics? Get the media to show different sized women (other than self-esteem fascist Oprah and lesbian Rosie) in positions of admiration.

  • I agree about there needing to be different sized women in the media besides the ultra thin ones now.

But it's not just about getting girls to eat that aren't eating. It's about prevention and it's about helping parents become more aware so they can help their children. Any awareness of this problem (that is largely hidden in our society) is good.

What have you done lately to help combat the issues of ED in our society?

Please don't criticize someone else's efforts for ED activism.

  • My dear, I used to have anorexia. And as such I have a right to criticize anyone I damn well please about this subject, especially when their "ED activism", quite frankly, is silly. "Oh, let's send a self-esteem fascist up there to tell women who are on the verge of self-starvation, that they must accept themselves or else! Yeah, that's gonna work!" NOT.

If this woman had confronted me when I was sick, I would have preferred to drop dead than be like her.

  • You want to help women with anorexia? Fix the underlying family dynamics, let them learn about real female achievers (athletes and capitalists, NOT women's studies lectureres and Wiccan priestesses...stick with those who shave their pits and legs), and keep in mind that BEING OBESE IS JUST AS BAD IF NOT WORSE! When you have an overweight woman who is a candidate for Type II telling girls with anorexia that they must accept themselves, I can tell you from experience it DOESN'T WORK!!!

  • First - This woman is not overweight. Second -This is video is only ONE way to help people becom
