Yeah, that's what they sounded like we they blew in St. Paul. But they didn't sound just like that back in the day, because they are badly corroded and bent from water pressure, and they didn't blow them full power. And they were saying we might be able to hear them across the river in Minneapolis, but we never did. LOL
I happened to be there that day. It was sad to hear it. Frankly, as far as sound quality goes, it was kind of lackluster. Still, very historically significant and really reminded one of the tragedy.
i have have been facinated about her and her sisters for 7 years and to hear her whistle words cannot describe how that made me feel it literly made the hairs stand up on my neck and make my heart throb! that was such a beutiful sound
it is a somewhat chilling feeling to hear that whistle blow, knowing the history of the ship and that the last time that those whistles were blown prior to recovery and restoration people were going to die
@starball23 A South African tycoon named Sarel Gous had the same thought and tried to build one in 2000. He didn't get very far, since most people (including Titanic survivors) thought it was a bad idea, and current shipping regulations don't permit ships of that design any longer since there are too many fire hazards and the lifeboats are slung too far above the waterline, among other things.
Yes Shaanongreene that's Titanic's real whistles. They were recovered and cleaned up a bit, and sounded just this one time. They pumped air through them instead of steam though, because they thought the steam could possibly damage them.
Hey, Kurt, good to hear from you. Low note is C#, upper is G, but it seems to me that one of the three chimes isn't sounding, so what the full chord is is anybody's guess. Remember, too, that blowing these with air sounds VASTLY different than they would with expanding steam. Cheers!
I would love to blow that EVERY time one of the idiots goes down my street, especially in the summer, with their mobile noice poluters-I mean CAR STEREOS!!
I was at this event in St. Paul. It was the first time the whistle was publicly sounded after its restoration. It was an amazing sound to hear...very, very moving.
@btomimatsucunard The whistles would have blown out every window in that building. On departure day they were literally heard for miles. These whistles can never again be blown at 100% due to how fragile they are.
Im sorry but we really need to get all the stuff that is donw their and bring it up becuase as that perosn down thurr said.. it will be gone soon..and theirs ALOT of history on it
the titanic had 4 working whistle's i wish they would make 4 of them and blow this one first o a live new's cast so the whole world could hear the R.M.S titanic whistle in H.D!!!
Sounds like one of the three bells is not chiming in--I suspect with adjustment we'd hear a full chord of more majestic character. Glad this is being preserved and displayed. Thanks for sharing. Kurt.
I wish I would have been there in person to hear it sound. I wish the ship had never sank. I wish it would have been damaged badly and had to be repaired and still brought about the saftey changes that the sinking brout fourth.
Titanic's original whistle can't be blown at full pressure due to implosion damage, not age. The water pressure is so massive at Titanic's grave that the whistle's internal components were crushed. There is a recording of a "replica" whistle on YouTube. It's Mauretania's original whistle, blown at full pressure steam using modern recording equipment. Both ships' whistles were identical in 1912.
omg i was there that day i never seen downtown st.paul that crazy loads of people all over. my grand pa said that was not loud at all, ship horns in duluth are louder then that. well they are. it was fun to see that anyways.
122cadet; they ddn't want to damage the whistle. so they blew it at low pressure. I was there also.I am from Duluth, your grand pa is right the boat horn are pretty loud in Duluth .
I was too! I was just about to say that. I was standing right next to that pillar in the background. I had to cover my ears partly because it was so loud.
I was there. Notice the woman plugging her ears at first. THey all instructed us to cover our ears that it was going to be deafenly LOUD!!! It wasn't. We had to uncover them tto hear it. There were somme guys in the apartmentsup above banging on drums ocasionally and hollering to "Blow the whistles". People were dressed in clothes of 1912. Ladies in big hats with feathers. men in old suits. And after the whitsles blew it was a mad rush getting out 2 smallish gates.
I am so happy someone took a video of this! I remember being there when this happened--I was only eight at the time--and it was still an amazing experience. There were soooo many people!
The sound of this horn in 1912 is supposed to be higher in pitch, they have reduced the airpressure because they were affraid of blowing the horn to pieces. Anyone who know if this is true?
Yes. Actually, the tone would be louder and richer with full-pressure steam. The hot steam would heat and enlarge the chambers. The high tone would be higher and the bass deeper. The volume would be much louder also. This is still essentially what it sounded like. There was fear that decades of corrosion under water might have weakened the whistles, making them fragile under full pressure.
@Dirtboy101 There's a guy named Mike Daugherty in the United States who makes whistles for a living. He could make a replica for a few thousand dollars. Look up MDWhistles.
Really the only difference in sound with steam blown whistles as opposed to whistles blown on compressed air is the fullness and richness of the sound. Hot steam has a density much greater than air alone, giving it more molecules in a tighter area to "rub" the metal. It's a much fuller sound with steam definitely great to hear them on air though especially the ones too special to subject to the heat and damage of steam.
I was there in St. Paul that day, it's cool to see this video! thanks for posting! It was surprisingly quiet, everyone had their ears plugged, but once they started going, it was like "oh, that's not so bad!" It would be cool if they made some replicas and blew them with steam, that'd be cool to hear too.
hey ibook3503332 the titanic is gonna be gone in 91 years from deterioration, dont you want a part of it to be preserved for the generations to come and learn about the people who died so they're never forgotten.
do you know if the tone is right? they use high pressure air here, but steam is hot and im sure the metal had to expanded alittle everytime they blew them, its cool to hear it after all these years though
@2076839 I would love for them to build one, but coming from experience working on a steam ship (coincidentally the engines on my ship were used in the movie titanic) it would not be feasable in this age to do it the techniques needed are not there any more some of the skills used in building titanic have been lost to time or are becoming lost. and it would cost so much to recreate an exact copy and also run it would not be in any way feasable.
@2076839 however I do wish they would build a full size working replica of one of her engines, that would be done at great expense but it still could be done today!
@2076839 talk to Cunard about that one lol, make it a modern day themed Titanic paint it original colors, use a replica of this whistle for the horn and of course let it trump the Allure of the seas and be nuclear power and jet propelled azimuth thrusters instead of props yes this ship would cost a fortune probably a easy 2-3 billion or so but honestly with as many Titanic geeks like us out there they would make their money back quickly
I disagree....put als many as objects to the surface to learn our mistakes in that time. In a few years the titanic will be gone except the ankers, who will last forever.
Wow incredible! I've herd this elsewhere before, but never saw video. where you there personally? and when and where was it? It is a very sad sound, considering I am a pure titanic freak. It's hard to think that was the first time it's been heard since April 10, 1912.
I also am one of the lucky few who go to touch it. I went to a titanic exibit when i was 3 with my family. My mother placed me next to the piece of hull and I wondered what it was, then, slapped my hand to it. I still remember the look on my mom's face. The greatest day of my life.
The whistle is running on compressed air in the video, which is actually typical when you're testing only the whistle on a steam engine. And plus, considering the age of this beauty, perhaps it would have been a bad idea to put steam through her pipes again.
Here in Port Huron,MI every fall they have a steamship whistle show. They use steam to sound the whistle's. I missed the show last year. One of the whistle's is from the former Bob-lo Boat S.S.Columbia built in 1902 that would make her 107 years old. The Ste Clair was her sister ship built in 1910 she is being restored. In the summer of 07 we had ran the steam whistle on compressed air in our case she didn't sound the same as she did with steam but it was GREAT to hear her again!
Too feel her deck plates shake is a feeling I just can't put into words just a tear to my eye. I'm planning to go up north for the Steamship Whistle Show this year. Thanks for posting this video.
Indeed! Thankfully, a lot of technology such as this steam whistle featured on the the Titanic didn't require electricity (unlike today), so it was all mechanical, which enables artifacts like this to still work when they're in good enough condition!
Whistles tend to be blown on steam and i see none so i assume this was done on air. Sounds nice, but if only it could sound like the one in the 1997 movie!
Although the sound is beautiful, it's also strangely haunting... It sounds almost like a ghostly echo emanating out of a grave in a misty, long forgotten cemetery... As stated below, creepy.
No, but I get information from some of the best sources of Titanic info out there. The Titanic Research & Modeling Association, their trustees, and their books and plans set some pretty high standards for Titanic info.
When Titanic was sinking, and they could clearly see the lights of the "californian" why didn't they (while sending up distress rockets) sounds all of Titanic's whistles? Clearly....being a quiet night and being less tan 5 miles away... the other should would have heard and perhaps made more notice?
but you have to remember the whistle was blown with steam and at the time they saw the Californian she had no steam in her boilers so even if they needed to they could not
Yeah, that's what they sounded like we they blew in St. Paul. But they didn't sound just like that back in the day, because they are badly corroded and bent from water pressure, and they didn't blow them full power. that's not suprising that the horn's sound like that.
it was the beginning of whistle technology in the late 19th, early 20th century.
they had whistles that could be heard about a mile or two,
but nothing more than that.
Queen Mary's horn's are a flat sounding vibrating tone,
that were designed to be heard ten mile's away.

they should bring up the Britannic's whistle, along with one of her funnels!

It probably was cut up with the rest of the ship, but by some off chance was the whistle from the Olympic saved?

It sounded nice but where's the steam? I didn't see any.
mmichaelc 2 years ago

DeltaPhi79 3 years ago
The one in the movie sounds nothing like a steam whistle.
firestar124 3 years ago
Just mentioning it. I don't know what a whistle THAT big would sound like.

Although the sound is beautiful, it's also strangely haunting... It sounds almost like a ghostly echo emanating out of a grave in a misty, long forgotten cemetery... As stated below, creepy.

were you even alive when it was still afloat?
steveoflyz 3 years ago
No, but I get information from some of the best sources of Titanic info out there. The Titanic Research & Modeling Association, their trustees, and their books and plans set some pretty high standards for Titanic info.

When Titanic was sinking, and they could clearly see the lights of the "californian" why didn't they (while sending up distress rockets) sounds all of Titanic's whistles? Clearly....being a quiet night and being less tan 5 miles away... the other should would have heard and perhaps made more notice?
seattlespartyguy 3 years ago
but you have to remember the whistle was blown with steam and at the time they saw the Californian she had no steam in her boilers so even if they needed to they could not
