Great Whites can differ greatly in personalities,some can generally be very aggressive while another one is a bit more of the opposite.
The water also has to be clear so both the diver and the shark can observe eachother without any problem,especially for the divers part.You can clearly see that he has done this many times before.If he sees the sharks behavior change then it is best to calmly get out of the water

just watched the doco, recommend it for sure. he can put the sharks into a trance by playing with their nose. this one that he got a ride from he rubbed its nose first and it submitted, a minute later he was catching a ride from it. amazing
I just watched a documentary on Mike Rutzen and he held on a great whites sharks fin and it carried him about 75 feet. It was a placid shark. They arent always in a hunting mood and different sharks have different attitudes some can be aggresive and others can be known as 'players' they are less agrresive and more interested not in eating the person but diiscovering what they are and he tests the sharks out before he goes swimming with them.

I've dived together with great whites. They only become hostile if you swim away from them or wrattle. Then they start going after you. They're really big cows in open clear water. Then they do not have the act of surprise, and they rarely become hostile. I do not however advise you to swim in shark infested water because it's safe. It's not. But Great whites usually make one large bite by a surprise attack and then let their victim bleed to death.
Id love to av the chance to do that, always dreamed of doin sumfin like that, i fink id rather go with a great white out the cage than a mako out the cage

Mike Rutzen has been swimming with great whites for ten years and without the protection of a cage. He has learnt to read and interpret their posture and their body language. This is a knowledge that keeps him safe.

I can't help but feel like they fefd this shark in advance.. making him less 'active'... fact remains that even though the shark isn't interested much in eating human flesh.. it does take a bite of you out of curiousity and a bite from a great white could mean death.. .so yeah, social animals bla bla bla.. but if I was a surfer , this video wouldn't make me feel comfortable at all.. cause I would be too busy surfing instead of watching for a shark and it's 'body language'. nice vid though!

cool video of freediving, the "sharkman" episode of michael rutzen is also great, but for me andre hartman is the master of freediving with great whites, he learned michael rutzen how to do it. still it is so cool to see people freediving with great whites

Yes species do go extinct, some with little impact and some that impact a little harder on their ecosystem.
The point is that sharks are the top predators and to lose them will have a devastating impact of those marine habitats.

If you're suggesting that if we lose sharks, then the sea lions will run rampant over the mackerel etc... I don't buy it.
Just watch a few episodes of Deadliest Catch. We've been decimating the ocean's populations of species for decades.
The species of the ocean are already all out of whack. And yet the ocean carries on.
We cull sea lions to protect fish. We cull anything that is an eco-danger to other species. We should cull sharks too.
Keep swimmers and kids safe. Cull sharks.

He is not crazy at all, he is a true professional and he has scars all of his body to prove how far he will go to show this stupid world that they are not the man eaters they have been protrayed to be. There are about 4 deaths due to shark attacts a year yet we kill 10 million sharks a year, unless you want to ocean turning into a waste land don't kill off the top predator which cleans it all up, think about that before you make your decesion. The ocean is their home not ours.

All the species of the oceans are already out of whack, partly due to humans, but partly due to marine life itself.
Sometimes an animal has a few seasons of population explosion... then everything is unbalanced.
To suggest that the ocean needs sharks is dumb. Things go extinct. Life goes on.
All this guy is proving is that when a shark is not hungry, you might be OK.
But if it is hungry... look out...

Sharks aren't so bad, and Great Whites aren't even the worst. Bull Sharks are the man eaters that everyone doesn't like. In fact, Steven Speilberg messed up Jaws, because the actual event that the movie was based off of was a man-eating Bull Shark, not a Great White.
Either way, this is still amazing. 5 starred and fav'd.

I've dived together with great whites. They only become hostile if you swim away from them or wrattle. Then they start going after you. They're really big cows in open clear water. Then they do not have the act of surprise, and they rarely become hostile. I do not however advise you to swim in shark infested water because it's safe. It's not. But Great whites usually make one large bite by a surprise attack and then let their victim bleed to death.
