Because it doesn't produce 1000 bhp, it produces 3000 bhp and looses 2/3rds of that, beleive it or not (watch the "McLaren F1 vs Bugatti Veyron" video by pAWLIKON if you don't beleive me).

This is why the things so loaded with heavy radiaters and oversized parts to cope.

All VW cared about when they were building the Veyron was headline grabbing numbers for maketing sake and hell with what makes a SuperCar really special (even it's wheels are Audi A6 copies!).

Actualy, the video I meant was "Bugatti vs McLaren" by timesonlinevideo.

Even so I really don't understand why everyone compares these cars! They're completely different beasts. The McLarens closest rival was the Carrera GT (or even Zonda).

The Veyron's much more like a Bentley for people who prefer bling more than hardcore driving. It has it's place but it's definatley not among the cars I've mentioned here and never will be.

McLaren will always be remembered as one of the best supercars, no doubt. If I had the money and could choose between a veyron and mclaren it would definitely be mclaren. As for as the extra mph...I guess if you live in Germany and have the ball$ to drive that fast on autobahn :) Koenigsegg is definitely faster than all those 3, it just doesn't have the prestige only outright speed. At the end of the day it depends on how much you can spend and what "bells and whistles" you want included :)
