The GREATEST sci fi series EVER! I am 57 years "young" now and remember seeing this when I was 9 and it scared the living daylights out of me but was definitely fun to watch! Between this, Twilight Zone, and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine (which devoted a write up on Outer Limits in there 26th issue!), it was a fantastic time to be what we call now a "monster kid" in the early to mid 1960's......
Great to see these rare promos. Never saw them before. Just posted a 4-part "The Outer Limits documentary" with interviews from William Shatner, Harlan Ellison, Robert Culp, et al. Check it out if interested.
This was one freaking fantastic TV show...the second promo, which showed clips of Martin Landau as "The Man Who Never Was", and the clip of David McCallum as the artificially created "man of the future" were two of the best stories ever brought to TV in any era. You didn't need special effects with stories and actors like these!
I go to type in " The Twilight Zone" and once i type in "the twilight" the first suggestion was "the twilight saga breaking dawn official trailer" -_-'
I always remember the one where everybody appears frozen - but they discover they're actually moving very slowly - an idea that got pinched by Star Trek (TOS). Great episode. I've sent you a nice stereo cover of the theme - enjoy!
My favourite tv show, hands down. Close to fifty years after its original run, it continues to impress. Everyone associated with this show should be proud of themselves. My personal favourite is A Feasibility Study, but Zanit Misfits holds a special place in my heart. ( I was sent to bed about half way through this episode and had to get my older sisters to tell me what happened. -I finally did see the full episode,though- about 20 years later!)
This was the absolute best show of its kind. Can not list episode after wonderful episode of creative writing, direction and talent that passed through this small 2 year door. I had to sneek to see it as my parents said it was too scary for young minds. Well I did see a few enough that I now have the total collection and even today they are smart, low tech (that is a good thing kids) and scary as heck! God Bless Leslie Stevens and Joe Stefano, the master creators!
Was I the only kid who was terrified to change the channel when this show came on? "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADJUST THE PICTURE....". Oh man, I could not move from in front of that humongous TV. Funny thing is, we often had a problem with the horizontal control except when watching the Outer Limits.
The Outer Limits gave minority actors significant roles when cast in any of the now legendary episodes; James Shigeta (who my mom adored), Diana Sands, Chita Rivera, Michael Ansara---and too many more to name----all stars in their own right, however not at times given that pivotal lead, or co-lead, role in order to display their true acting gifts. The Outer Limits totally knocked down these barriers and brought these minority actors front and center---as equals to their white counterparts.
The finest sci-fi classic ever made on television, #1, I have the entire collection on DVD and I cherish this treasure. Star Trek? It don't compare. Twilight Zone is very close to it. Lost In Space in the early seasons is good and The Invaders is very good too but The Outer Limits is the best of them all.
I used to watch this as a kid and just the opening sequence sent shivers up my spine! Here's a question though. Can anyone recall a US TV series about the same time as this, like a cross between Outer Limits and the Twilight Zone? The opening titles were kind of out of focus fairground rides. Like Coney Island footage. I can recall the music but no good here!
@alanstarkie2001 I cannot remember the name of the show, but I do remember the intro. It had a camera on a wooden roller coaster. I also remember the music and how it intensified as the coaster approached the apex.
The original series had a very specific character to it (same for twilight zone) that wasn't captured in the modern color remakes.
I felt the new versions were weak and soulless marketing franchise rehashing, that felt more like Creepshow than their predecessors, and suffer from efforting to be humorous and ironic. They felt somehow transparent and more like you were watching it in broad daylight even in a dark room..no creepy, no scary, no hair on the back of your neck standing...just flat.
This was a great show that has stood the test of time! I loved this show as a kid. I did not read the messages below before using the phrase above, but it is so true and I was also thinking about the Twilight Zone as well....two great series!
I remember this in first run when I was a very little kid. Thhe monsters from LOST IN SPACE and the OUTER LIMITS gave me bad dreams. The ZANTIS scared me and my sister out of our minds, and we watched it hiding behind the refrigerator in the kitchen, and the TV was in the living room. OUTER LIMITS was first great SCI FI TV next to the TWILIGHT ZONE, and STAR TREK a couple yars later. 1960s was a magical time, of booming economy, and moon-missions, and secret super-technology, like this.
I just got ALL episodes (on 6 DVD's) of the original Outer Limit series today. The whole compilation was on sale on $30 at Best Buy.I just couldn't pass it up.I remember watching the original series when I was a child.
I have the fondest memories of watching this in syndication in the late 60s with my dad. Good thing it was on in the afternoon 'cause it would have given me nightmares otherwise. And to Happymundo who thinks the '95 version was better ... what brand of glue are you sniffing?
How could a science fiction show hope to score big without expensive special effects? Two words - great writing. Outer Limits and Twilight Zone have withstood the test of time precisely for this reason.
My favorite episode is "The premonition"

These ABC promos should have been included in the 2002 DVD release of
OUTER LIMITS-but MGM was not very considerate-or cared,as it overlooked
such a rareity. compounding the insult, was that this studio had put these episodes
on these cheap.MultiDisc DVDs that made them looked burned-a stupid move!!

No you were not! I used to take cover in a corner until I had seen the "monster" of that episode.
Remember when we had TV's that needed to be adjusted like they did in the beginning of the show?
Or when the TV failed and TV repairmen made housecalls at night?
Great show, fondest memories, thank you for the vid!
