The friends overreacted, but they are not that bad. If you pay attention towards the end of the movie, you will notice that they are driving around listening to the one friend read them some lesbian story. That scene tells me that they were processing it together and perhaps trying to "understand" Evie's situation. They also noticed her car and pulled in to the car park meaning they wanted to see her. Everyone reacts to things differently. Sometimes people need time to process things.
