@TheInvincible1997 Do you really NOT know?!?!? That's Yifter. A TRUE champion, as is Viren. I wonder if Pre would have even made it into this final...
@Sangesar1919 Dude - you are classless as they come. Why are Ethiopian's classless? If you have a beef with the guy - deal with him personally. But lumping a whole nation into one, I can't even find a word for it. Please don't bother reply - it will be another panoramic view of your empty head!
@Sangesar1919 How about you get lost? You stupid little racist, stereotyping asshole. You're a fucking troll with no life, you have no class. You sit on your computer night and day, typing racist, and bitchy comments on YouTube to try to piss people off and make them feel bad. Get lost, and don't both replying, shut your mouth, and get your head straight.
Okay, YifterTheShifter1..did you know that I coined that phrase after Yifter ran a 54 second last lap on me in the 1979 World Cup 10,000 m. ? I assume that race is probably available here somewhere. No one will ever know what would have happened in Moscow., in this 10K final...if America hadn't boycotted the Olympic Games that year. But, if you look at the race that I ran against a very fit Herb Lindsay in the Olympic Trials 10K....it was not only fast...but broken pace, too. 27:45 Good prep!
When Craig lowered his American record in the 10,000 to 27:29.16 at Paris in 1980, it was the second fastest time in history behind Henry Rono’s 1978 world record of 27:22.47. The winning time in the ’80 Olympics, which the U.S. boycotted, was 27:42.69.
When Craig Virgin lowered his American record in the 10,000m to 27:29.16 at Paris in 1980, it was the second fastest time in history behind Henry Rono’s 1978 world record of 27:22.47. The winning time in the ’80 Olympics, which the U.S. boycotted, was 27:42.69.
@kmkfox12 Kenenisa Bekele ran 12:37.35 in 2004. The winning time at the Olympic games that year was 13:14, but Kenenisa wasn't the winner. What does that tell you? I doubt he could beat Yifter in a last lap dash, which essentially what wins or loses a 10,000 at the Olympics.
Ok, how did you get the email of YiftertheShifter, and why do you have it? Craig Virgin was the first person to name Yifter "the shifter" because of his blasting speed the last 300 meters.
@kmkfox12 Why I have it is none of your concern, although I will answer that I am a fan of Yifter, having been thoroughly stunned by his change of pace. No need to introduce a man who I already know about, but as for the Craig Virgin fact... interesting. You cannot prove that Virgin could've beaten Yifter simply by having a faster time than these olympics were won in.
@kmkfox12 Paul Tergat won the world cross country championships five years in a row... did he win Olympic gold on the track? How about Lopes? Radcliffe?
My comment is purely based on the fact that Craig was at the top of his game from '79 - '81, and if there ever was a possibility of an Olympic gold, it would have been in 1980.
@kmkfox12 I see. Just be careful when comparing cross country and track; although cross country is still long distance running, as many commentators said, "it's a different game on the track."
Virgin had no speed. He'd of gotten blitzed in the last lap, assuming he could have stayed with that constantly surging lead pack with Viren and Kedir.
@knightsxc06 You can't compare winning the World XC with true speed on the track. Did Virgin outkick Viren? No. Did Virgin outkick Yifter? No. Did Virgin outkick Väätäinen, Maaninka, Kedir, et al?
@futuremodal: I'll give it to you that track and XC are different worlds, but Virgin's finishing burst to win the 1980 World Cross at the LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT seems to imply, at least to me, that even if he was not at a kicking level of a Yifter, A kedir or a (blood doping) Maaninka, that his hand would have been on the table and he would have easily been in that final pack of five in the final mile of the 10k in Moscow.
Would have been something to see Väätäinen and Yifter, both in their prime, in a final lap free-for-all. Both could run 48 in the open 400, both ran 54 last laps in their respective championship 10k's.
That is inconsequential. Viren won two 10K titles, just like Nurmi, Zatopek, Bekele and Gebreselassie (who, like Viren, had injury just prior to his third olympics and ended up fading to 5th place, way more than Viren), Viren's focus was marathon running... I don't think he had any real thoughts about taking the gold medal in this race.
Well, so would anybody else who participated in '76, but judging by his shape in winning the second double 5K/10K, I wonder how much he really benefited from the boycott.
Yes, that would have been very interesting. Too bad that Väätäinen and Yifter never competed against each other in major international championships. Väätäinen's best year of running was already 1971.
Well, in a way they did both compete in the Munich 5k. I mean, they were both there, but Yifter apparently overslept and missed the final, while Väätäinen had either "leg problems" or a mis-timed reaction to his blood treatment, or it could be he just couldn't handle the 4 minute mile pace of that last 4 laps in Munich.
But still, think about it: Yifter and Väätäinen in a dead sprint over the last lap - who wins?
Strange race. It is unusual to see runners continually fight for the lead. It was even more unusual to see Viren engage in such wasteful tactics. It should suprise no one that the two runners who ran smartest (Yifter and Maaninka) also finished first and second. Maaninka may have had a chance to win this race but he was out of position at 300 to go - should have been on Viren's shoulder at that point.
Yes, as David Coleman said in the English Commentary of this race, Viren ran a champion's race in this final- he was in a lot pain, which is clearly visible on his face, and he had a stomach patch, which forced him to drop out of this game's Olympic Marathon.
Just FYI, Kaarlo Maaninka (the silver medallist) became religious after his career and admitted to using blood doping. It wasn't illegal at the time, but it was deemed higly unethical.

Yifters change of pace on the bell was quite amazing, highly unusual in such a class field and the Olympic Final.
Viren was certainly no slouch but he looked second class to Yifter on the day.

Blood-doped or not, Viren ran a superb
race. This was the last time he broke 28
minutes over 10,000 metres. In the awfully hot semifinals, he had run 55 seconds more slowly. By the way, on the
second half of the race, the Ethiopians
ran laps at an average of 66 to 67 seconds per lap, except for the last lap
(about 54.5 seconds for Yifter). What
exhausted most other runners was
Kedir's and Yifter's constant accelerating,
followed by a slight slowdown. Viren dropped with 300 metres to go.
Zndwls 2 years ago 2
Yes, as David Coleman said in the English Commentary of this race, Viren ran a champion's race in this final- he was in a lot pain, which is clearly visible on his face, and he had a stomach patch, which forced him to drop out of this game's Olympic Marathon.
