  • Love this live version. Not quite as breakneck as the other live version posted, but much more in control and together. The band here is awesome.

  • back when vh1 played real music programs

  • the piano solo is meant to sound like a banjo....

  • what a performance..the banjo and piano are in total sync...Thank God for Billy

  • i remember once when i went out of town with my family, my boyfriend at the time played this for me (and taped a copy of it for my trip to listen to on my Walkman), and i thought it was SO romantic! what a great song, and an even greater piano man! thanks for sharing!

  • The only band member here that would stay with Billy for a long time is the bass player (Doug Stegmeyer). The rest ended up being replaced. But these players were fantastic.

  • No way that's a bass sax or richie cannata with a huge beard.

  • Perhaps my favorite of his and definitely from his best album. The into alone is enough to do it for me.

  • An extraordinary musician and one of my favorite songs of his.

  • The bass sax player is richie cannata just with a huge beard

  • Sounds like how an auctioneer would sing. :)

  • FAN tastic!!

  • One of the hidden gems!

  • a classic

  • This is SO GREAT!!!! Thanks for uploading!

  • this is from 1975

  • This song is a monument. I suggest you listen to the Bluegrass version by Dolly Parton on her "The Grass is Blue" CD.

  • Nice rendition, but nothing beats that fiddle section in studio version for me.

  • does anyone know if the banjo player is tuned on open G tuning. id like to learn this tune

  • @MarvinLeeAday69

    Hi,

Obviously, the banjo is played in regular open G tuning. This performance may be impressive but it is not so dificult to pick the banjo like this. If you want to learn the tune, I suggest you to pick the lyrics on Ihe net and you listen to the remarkable Bluegrass version by Dolly Parton, on her "The Grass is Blue" CD, with the very best of Bluegrass musicians, amongst them Jim Mills on banjo.

  • To be totally informative, let me say that the tune is in the key of D (picking the C position with the capo at the second fret).

  • RIP Doug. What a great bassist. Drugs ruin lives.

  • The only one member of the Joel band joining this Midnight Special apperance was the late Doug Steigmayer on guitar

  • @MyRickyz - Rhys Clark is on drums, he was Billy's drummer from 1971-1975

  • This is King Billy at his best..I'll never tire of this video..thanks for posting it.great musicains backing the best live performer..does anyone know the banjo players name

  • Hey, thanks for posting this one. Never heard a version with Sax in it before. Excellent find.

  • That is some serious piano playing! But then again, everything Billy does is magic.

  • dont you just hate in when audiences insist on applauding in the short silent breaks within songs.

  • Anyone else notice the guy at 2:23 looks like one of the cavemen off the Geico commercials? XD XD XD

  • Hairy arms and all.

  • LOL

  • Also don't leave out the sax player either...

  • Ah, if only you knew how many of us looked like that in the seventies...

  • I do but you'll have trouble getting me to admit it outside of this web site!

  • Nice one Marsden

  • Bass Guitarist looks familiar....anybody else my wildest guess hahaha

  • Oh and the bass guitarist is Doug Stegmeyer, he committed suicide in 1995.

  • This is awesome

  • Billy Joel never ceases to amaze me. He really needs to school this generation of "musicians".

  • Agreed

  • this si music this is great, this is BILLY! This song is one of the first once i ever heard from him and i like this song so much, i listen to it every day. Thank you for posting this it its a great song :) p.s. OKALY DOKALY

  • oh my god, it´s been 35years since then. 10 years later, i was born.

i hope, that billy is gonna go on stage in europe again.

i like his old stuff.especially cold spring harbour and piano man. turnstiles is great.

bye the way: do you have any of the James performances? i just know one

    thanx

    James

  • You should be able to find some of the "James' performances right here on YouTube. Unless you've already seen it... You said you knew one version, right? Which one? Can you send me the link?

  • Excellent....ahhh..this is what I meant by true good music from the 70s to the late 80s...^_^ cuz nowadays..., the younger generation of today don't know what real music is...as all they know is the irritaing Avril Lavrigne.., Linkin Park.., etc...

  • You are right 100%. Could you please share this video with all your friends for me? I want it to get a lot of views.

  • Ok...No problem..^_^

  • How old are you? I'mjust curious because you seem to have an appreciation for true music, something not seen in many of today's youth. I'm fourteen, so if you could send me an answer, that would be cool.
