  • FMS Fabrication Branch / Metals Processing Mar '84 - Sept '87

  • I was a cook at the main chow hall, the inflight kitchen and the alert facility from '84 to '87. Lots of trips to the OTB, Blue Bonnet in Montreal, Lake Placid, Burlington. Good times, except for all the cooking... Then on to Fairford RAF.

  • Can you please edit the title from "Plattsurgh" to "Plattsburgh"

  • @tjcrowley913

you know i never noticed the typo.... thank you so much. bet i get tons of hits now. lol i hope you enjoyed the video. wayne

  • I was assigned there from 1983-1987 after serving 4 years at Shaw Afb in Sumter,SC.

  • I was stationed at Plattsburgh in 1957, 58 with the 26th Air Refueling Squadron. Our squadron was transfered there from Westover AFB. I was a crew chief on a KC97G tanker. We were often sent to Thule Greenland on TDY for 30 to 60 days. I like the Plattsburgh area, but the "brass monkey" didn't have a chance there in the winter time. Working on the flight line in the middle of the night was tough. I remember going to a couple of bars there which was The Fife and Drum and Brodies.

  • USAF SPS 1976 - 1979..."A" flight Animals...Nice memories

  • I was there from 84-88. 380FMS Fuel Cell. I still get back up there from time to time and it has changed quite a bit. The old maintenance group dorms are piles of rubble now, housing has been sold off to a developer who remodeled much and sold it off. Hospital is gone. The Old Base still looks great though.

  • I was stationed here 78 to 81. 380th FMS Engine Conditioning Jet Shop, call sign MIKE 4.

Remember many cold nights changing and engine or two on the line or trimming on the 360 pad. Water runs on the KC's. Thats right young dudes WATER RUN"S. Big BLUE Oh ! the memories. THANKS ! ! ! ! ! JET NOISE THE SOUND OF FREEDOM

  • I was there in 1978. I hope the old barracks near the track were preserved. Those barracks were used to house Union soldiers before being sent off to the war. The area was a battle zone in the American Revolutionary War. And of course, the base protected the USA from Russian attack for many years.

  • Remember walking and tumbing to downtown Plattsburg with my buds in the mid 70'S[,very few had cars] ,to hit the bars,Mothers , Rainbow,Herbies were local bar names, mothers was a disco bar in the day, there was a dominos right outside the base ,pizzas were 3 bucks.

  • I was stationed there fron1976-1981,we were a major support for lake placid olympic in 1980,I worked on the flight line POL-fuel system specialist,I remember those buildings, brings back alot ,I dont miss those miserable winters on the flight line though ,thanks

  • Very nice video. I was stationed at Plattsburgh '92-'94. Good to see my old dorms, hangar, base housing and all the other buildings, including the old base side. Cold almost all year, but a great SAC base nonetheless.

  • Great video. Sad to see a closed air base. Reminds me of the former USAF bases at Woodbridge, Bentwaters, Alconbury, Upper Heyford and Sculthorpe in England:(

  • Nice video, I was there 1967 - 1969. Only 8 years old. I remember the snow, baseball and fishing on lake champlain. My Dad was the EWO on a B 52 that crashed January 21 1968 Thule Greenland.

  • What a great video find. I was stationed at PAFB from 1967 to 1971, DCM staff. Great times!

  • Lord knows how many warheads the Russians had targeted on this base. Hope the FBs would have made it out in time had the Cold War ever flared hot

  • Spent a month in Plattsburg AFB in summer of 1985 for my ROTC Field Training. great memories.

  • I was there from March85-April89. Worked in control tower, met my wife (,a local girl) ,been back 5or 6 times more sad every time I see it. Always wanted to move back to area someday, but with base gone it lost it's charm.

  • I was fortunate enough to make it back thru there in the late 90's after it had been shut down for a few years. Kinda wierd seeing it dead and dormant at the time, especially having been stationed there at full strength with both FB-111's and KC-135's.

I was assigned to the 380 OMS Red Flight from September 1986 to September 2001. Crewed FB's and pulled quite a bit of duty on "the pad" and on swing shift on the line. Did a lot of growing up during my stay there, and have alot of memories.

  • I was brought to tears by this video. My AF career began at Plattsburgh AFB. From 1973-1980 assigned to the 380 FMS Propulsion Branch. Spent a lot of cold nights on the 360 pad. It looked like my house on Montana drive in the video. Remember the parties in the black hanger after the Bombing Competitions? Those were the days. Can’t believe it’s all gone and dilapidated.

  • @wdolan840

You were there about the time I was ,I remember refueling and defueling kc-135s at night ,freezing my ass off on the flight line, going to base ops getting box lunches for the boys at base fuels, having section booze parties, and smoking cigs like a chimmy, good old days for sure, seemed just about everyone smoked backed then.

  • Great Video and I loved the song that went so well with it. I was station at P'burgh from 82-88 as part of the 380th Avionics Maintenance Squardon - Automatic Test Systems shop for the FB111s. Those were some of the best years of my life. I was sorry to hear they closed the base in 95 and to see how run down and over grown the place has become, even though I've checked out the old stomping grounds over the years on sites like TerraServer and Google Earth. Thanks for the memories!

  • @jtaur60 I was station there from 82 - 86 in the 380th Avionics Maintenance Squardon AFIS shop also/

  • This isnt too bad at all - the base I went to after Plattsburgh to be an instructor at, Chanute AFB in IL, is rotting in place.

Anyone have current photos of the weapons storage area oppositeside of the runway from the flightline?

  • This was one of my favorite assignments when I was on active duty. Sad that the base is no longer there. Upper New England is a glorious part of the country to be in during the early fall and winter. Check it out if you can.

  • are thet tearing down most of the buildings?

  • @Rick9368 No this one actually has been repurposed pretty well by the locals. The water tower has been taken down as the city of Plattsburgh has connected their water system to the old base mains. Not sure what happened with the munitions area (WSA) I worked in when I was there from 83 to 85.

  • This absolutely broke my heart. My dad was stationed here from 1989-1994. We left shortly before the base closed, but we knew it was happening. To see what has become of the place makes me so sad as we had some wonderful memories of the place. Thank you for such a touching tribute.

  • Great video. I was stationed there from 1993 until it's closure in 1995. I tell people that I locked the gates on my way out. I worked TRNS and shipped a lot of the stuff from PAFB to other bases. I met and married my wife there. We exchanged vows in the gazebo on the "Old Base" oval and I truly miss being there. If it hadn't closed I would still be active duty without a doubt. Instead, Grand Forks sealed my fate in the USAF. My wife's fam is still in P-burgh and we visit whenever we can

  • This was a great tribute, you couldn't have picked a better song,it brought tears to my eyes when I watched it, I was only 19 when the base closed "long ago...but not so very long ago" I was born and raised here, and proud to call still call it home. "our town, love it anyway, come what may, it's our town" Anyone who has ever been stationed here in Plattsburgh, I hope you had fond memories of our little town :) and I hope this little town holds a special place in your hearts.....

  • Wow lots of memories there. Hard to see housing run down and abandoned like that. A lot of memories in those walls.

  • We were stationed here 1973-1979...my Husband was in 380th maintanance sheet metal shop. Our daughter was born at CPVH. We had many good times at PAFB. I remember the KC 135 warming up on the run way and as they take off all the things on my walls would rattle. When I now see these pictures of the base housing and it being over grown it sadden me.....it's to bad it had to close but will always remember the good times and all the friends we made...thank you for the memory.

  • This was one of my many home away from homes Plattsburg is now in my memories and in my photo album dad was a Tech SGT here(lol) back in the late 1960's & early 1970's. THanx for the post.

  • I was in the 380th MMS from Aug 1984 - Oct 1985. It was my first duty station after tech school at Lowry AFB in Denver. I was a 462 (bomb loader).

Only thing I didn't like about Plattsburgh was the cold weather lol

  • Thanks for the video. We moved here in 1984 and stayed to raise our family. I will never forget that sad day the base closed and we watched as the earth took back what once belonged to her. How we miss everyone. My husband was LE and ran Pass and ID

  • beautifully done. many thanks to you for memorializing an important and proud place.

  • GREAT JOB!!!

  • Many thanks from this former AF brat too...this was more than touching...

PAFB was & still remains my favorite base to have been stationed on. I fell in love with the town, that part of the country, the people, & the excellent education system I've never forgotten. I spend a lot of time searching online for pictures or videos of PAFB or the town of Plattsbutgh---so I thank you once again! This is SO very special to me...

  • Wow, this was really touching. We lived at PAFB from 1991 to 1993 and it was our first Air Force assignment. We have very fond memories of the base and the community. The shot of the base hospital being torn down is especially sad because my husband was a new Captain in Public Health there. His office was in the old OB ward on the third floor I believe. Thanks for posing this....many good times at PAFB! So sorry that the base closed.
