  • NO ONION???

  • I use brown gravy mix, beef bullion, Worcestershire, beef broth, a flour slurry, garlic, salt and pepper, a tbls. of paprika, and onion powder.. And it tastes great.. I have a weak appetite so my food has to have a lot of flavor so give this one a try and I think you will be pleased. It also served over mashed potatoes or white rice in my house..Or we have biscuits with our stew.. Good luck..

  • @TheTinywhitedove thanks, sounds good!

  • Aaaw, the ending was cute - it needs more flavor, its okay, well its missing something but well its okay... its okay, enjoy... :)

  • @Dimanta lol :) I don't like just 'okay' meals. I want flavor!

  • @Dimanta

not to be mean but i thought it was very funny and sweet in a way. i did chuckle quite a bit and that alone made the vid worthwhile. it kind of reminds me when i made my first meals when i went to college.

  • it seems like you like your food like me with a good favor .... i do my beef stew almost just like you do but i had a pack of the beef stew seasoning you get for maybe $.79 store brand and the (lipton) onion mushroom soup/dip/stew season ....2 packs come in a box but only use 1. they always have great recipe on the box too.

  • spoon full of the beef bouillon. And when the veggies are done, add the peas and add the broth and mix it together. Then I just let it go on low for a little while, about 30 minutes, then dished it up! It is soooo flavorful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You may want more salt, i always add more salt or pepper for my liking but others may not like it that way. You are promised bursting flavor with this =)

  • @michellenn93 thanks sounds yummy

  • SEPARETELY mixed about 1 cup of flower with about 3 cups of water and mixed it til the chunks were out then mixed it into the broth. You want a light to medium brown color for the right flavor so you might have to add another mix of a half a cup of flower and cup or so of water to it if its not light enough. And I also added about 5 spoon fulls of beef bouillon to that too. If its too think but the right color, just add a little bit of water til its as thick as you like it. And add another (...)

  • add the broth until last! The veggies looked over cooked but once I added my broth they came back to life and they are not over cooked at all, my broth was: a jug of beef Swanson cooking stock, 3 packets of brown gravy (doesnt matter what brand really) not sure how much water but my pot is about 12 by 12 inches and it was about 3 and a half inches full of water and the beef stock, then I added a dash of garlic pepper, dash of seasoning salt, teaspoon of salt, teasoon of pepper, then I (.....)

  • I just made my first beef stew in my crockpot tonight and for the beef i roled each piece into a mixture of about a cup and a half of flower, 3 spoon fulls of beef bouillon, and a packet of beef stew seasoning then I browned the beef just a little so it wasnt fully cooked just browned on the outside. Then i put it at the bottom of the crock pot then my mixture of veggies which were red potatos, carrots, and onions, all copped about a square inch. Added peas when almost done, and I didnt (.....)

  • IT NEED DUMPLINGS!!!!

  • @shannan2000 I have never had dumplings!

  • Nice video. Worcestershire sauce is pronounced "wuss-ter-shire". I should know, I'm english xD

  • @jimthehappymonkey1 Thanks

  • @CookingAndCrafting Theeeeaanks.

  • @jimthehappymonkey1 you say arshole i say asshole you frickin teabagging knute.

  • @jimthehappymonkey1 wow, goo for you my man

  • Great video, My wife got me a slow cooker crock pot, since I bbq slow smoke cook in a large scale, she thought I would like this. I like the cuts on your vegetables, as for flavor and spices, play with it a bit, I have learned that when bbq'n, spice balance is very essential. It is a science which to use with what and in what volume. I look forward to trying it out this week. Your meal looked great.

  • @rubiconramblers Thanks. I love digging out that crock pot and hope you do too!

  • Nice recipe, I'm getting started on the whole slow cooking thing and I like the the way you chop your vegetables into big chunks as I think it just presents better. For extra taste I'd recommend bbq sauce & mixed herbs. In future I hope to make a beef & red wine casserole. Thanks for sharing: Tommy - Brisbane Australia.

  • @tommybrisbane2011 I chop them big for two reasons: One, I worry it will dissolve (ha! but it doesn't) and two, I HATE fishing around for something. If I want a potato, I know I can grab one, same with the carrots. My mom used to cut the potatoes up smaller when we were kids and it seemed that they just dissolved into the stew itself (she is notorious for totally over-cooking everything)

  • worcester needs to be used more generously and adds a tang and sweetness, but shoyu would have given you more depth. i would use both/will use both if i try this one. i dunno, browning certainly helps but for me it kind of negates the ease of the crockpotting. i would use more spice/flavors to deepen it yup.

  • @snarkdetriomphe YOU GET IT... the other 42 people didn't. The browning is something you'd do if you had the time in the mornings to do before zipping out to go to work. It is probably something I would do if I weren't presenting the recipe exactly as is from the book. I don't know if all the browning in the world would have given this exactly the flavor I was looking for only because I said the stew we grew up with was tomato based. My mom is totally ghetto. I should make her do the stew recipe

  • @snarkdetriomphe In fact I should make her do most of the dishes she made us growing up. You'd be appalled at her cooking "skills" lol and what we had to eat growing up

  • mmmm the ingredients read yummily! tomato-based stuff like stew and meatloaf is not my thing... this sounds amazzzzzing. as i have mentioned, my mom is gonna give me her crockpot... can't wait!

  • oh where are my manners... hey kid.

  • holy crappola i am so farrrr behind on yours and tammyyoyos vids!

  • @snarkdetriomphe You've been busy ;)

You need to make your mom give you the crockpot faster... just sayin

  • Hi, this recipe looks excellent! A friend once made a similar recipe, she used the pressure cooker.

You mentioned that it needed more salt, and I'm wondering maybe next time you could try adding soy sauce--I'd experienced a similar problem with "blandness" when cooking with consomme soup, and then heard about using soy sauce. I was skeptical, but it brought out a nice flavor and so I try it with other things too. And shoyu is great with beef :)

    Thanks always for your videos!

  • @sionnach8 Thanks! Great idea... I was thinking worchestershire sauce, but I think shoyu would give it just what I need. Lots of people said browning the meat would have added the flavor also. So will try that too. This was really good, just sort of missing that certain something

  • Dammit! Brieannas21 beat me to it. Dredging the meat in the flour, searing it quick over high heat (so as to not cook it), and then dumping it in drippings and all, would've added that missing robustness.

Going technical, the flour didn't cook, the meat didn't brown, so the roux never finished, and it came out bleh. If you could call that technical..... LOL

  • I just told my hubby I wanted some beef stew. lol! So now I know how to make it! Thanks girl! ;)

  • @AshleyFD26 yey! You're welcome!

  • I think that if you would have tossed the meat in flour and a little cornstarch and browned the meat first, then added the meat and drippings into the crockpot, it would have given the stew more flavor. Also it would have thicken up the gravy.

  • looks delish i think the veggies might need some salt or something....

  • I have to share the easiest crock pot recipe with you: put a roast of beef in your crockpot, pour over a packet of onion soup mix, and a can of coke. Cook on low for about 8 hours - don't scoff, you will be amazed!

When I do crockpot stew, I use the coke and onion soup mix over the stewing beef and let it cook on low overnight, then add a can of tomatoes, garlic, onion, potatoes, carrots, corn, and peas. Then let it cook until veggies are done. Yummy!

  • I make this type of stew all the time and I sear the meat first it does make a difference. Plus I use one of those spice packages for stew. I cook mine on high then when it's close to being done I thicken the liquid into a gravy with flour. I also add frozen peas in at the end.

  • I was thinking... OMG that's going to be good while you were putting everything into the pot. Wonder what you could have done to bump up the taste? It looked good though. Hugs!

  • I bet it was missing a caramelized taste. Sear off the meat before and I bet it would be much better.

  • : )

  • Sista you making me hungry!!! It might need some spice to it. Looks yummy!!

  • I was drooling through the whole vid. As much as I hate the cold & snow I love the crisp fall weather so we can start having beef stew. pot roast and chciken and dumplings again lol.

I would have maybe added an extra beef bouliion cube to punch up the flavor. I often do this if I'm no browning somehting. Thats my 2 cents lol.

  • I like the allrecipes website and would have browned the meat too, it brings out the flavor:-) Looks wonderful as always!

  • wish i had a slow cooker...you might have inspired me to buy one. ...looks great.

  • @Pevebra1 I hope you do! I love using my slow cooker!

  • I wonder if adding some powdered gravy or stew mix would help bump it up a bit more... I know my mother uses it when she makes beef stew.

  • i dont comment very often but i just want you to know that i watch

all of your video's & i appreciate you!

  • @evilapplepie well thank you so much for saying so :)

  • It looks wonderful! :)

  • I do like how AllRecipes allows people to add tips. Do you think the flavors would have melded more if it had been stirred more often? No garlic? That just seems wrong! The juice looked very rich; odd that it wasn't flavorful. Good video; I love that you tell your honest opinion.

  • looks good, Beth. The meat doesn't look over done at all - looks tender, too. - roc

  • Your stew looks great! Browning the meat in seasoned flour first gives a richer flavor due to the carmelization. It's kind of a hassle, but worth it in the end. Some peas also help swetner/flavor it up. :)

  • If I made it without potatoes would I need to adjust the cook time ?

  • When I used to make a beef dinner like this I got some beef stew or whatever flavoring packet. That should jack it up or put some Asian flavors in it!! It looks great to me!

  • Yum, yum, yum :)

  • You sound a little under the weather in this video?

  • I would suggest adding a package of Lipton Onion Soup mix. That will give it more flavor. :o)

  • i'll try it and add a mc cormick beef stew packet for flavor.

  • I have never made my beef stew any other way...I love slow cookers !!

  • yay! the more slow cooking recipes the better. the boys love them and they think i worked harder on them than i did :)

    xoexo

  • I would have used an onion soup mix and a jar of beef gravy...looked really good though now I'm hungry....lol

  • @Carballoca The gravy from this was really good, so I think more gravy might be overkill?

  • @Carballoca WHoops, sorry, mixed this video up with the one that I did today!

  • why must i always watch your videos in the middle of the night!!! i'm going to die of hunger now! *drools*

  • @green2666 hehe Sorry ;)

  • I use beefy onion soup mix, it really adds kick up the flavor. I use it for my roasts, and soups etc.

  • @Pantalooniesconqueso I will have to look and see if they have that beefy onion soup mix here. I bet it would have added crazy flavor to it

  • @CookingAndCrafting I promise you ... that if you can find the beefy onion dried soup mix that the flavors in that pot will drive you wild!!! i don't add anything else except some garlic but then im a fiend for garlic!! I really love your show, bain is adorable too. And you seem such a wonderful and nice person to be around, thank you for sharing your life and food with us!

  • @Pantalooniesconqueso Thank you so much :)

  • @IWalk4tnt I agree with you if you don't brown that flour you are missing some awesome flavor. Even if you don't want to brown the meat, make a roux when it gets to the color of a brown paper sack add your liquid and transfer it to the crock pot. My secret ingredient in pot roast or stew is coffee. You don't taste it but it makes the gravy sooo much better. About 1/2 cup of leftover coffee or a tsp of instant coffee will do it.

  • oops coconut

  • What about adding some co nut milk or cream and maybe some pineapple

  • @Fitange oh my.. I dunno. You mean along with the soup and stuff?

  • @Fitange Sorry, mixed this recipe up with the one I made tonight!

  • Its missing a bottle of red wine ;).

  • @PseudonymxSam hahaha Yep

  • Yummmmm Was it tender? ( For some reason mine wouldn't play all the way through to the end of the video)

  • @yescandles Yep, it was nice. Safeway has the worst cuts of meat though. I should have gotten it at Costco

  • I love those cute little celerys! Lol I may have to do a garden next year.

  • @mandacakes108 hehe Yep, they are teeny but bursting with flavor!

  • I usually add rosemary and sometimes sage to my soups and stews. That could of been what was missing

  • @ArielannaDragonBlood That sounds like it would have added a bunch of flavor

  • I dredge the beef in salt, pepper, and flour and then brown it. I wonder if that is the key to the extra flavor that is missing. Looks delicious though!

  • @IWalk4tnt Yeah, I always hate putting in uncooked meat and there was one recipe that suggested browing the beef..

  • I'm loving these slow cooker recipes! I'm always looking for recipes for mine. Only problem is the 2 that I have are not the same size as yours so I would have to reduce the ingredient amount accordingly. Looks amazing still :D

  • @ArielannaDragonBlood Yeah, all of the recipes I do are reworked to fit what I need to feed the family.

  • Thanks for sharing this.

  • @mrchii06 You're welcome :)

  • Looks Yummy !!

  • @Barginjunkie69 It was, thanks :)
