I saw them on this tour! Neil blew out a kick drum head (the side towards the audience) early in the show -- failed right by the port. One of the techs had to come out and cut it out so it wasn't flapping.
I thought his 1994 (Ludwig?) kit sounded the best. After that, his Vapor Trails kit. I thought the VT kit had a better sound than the R30 one. I know, this is extremely geeky gear talk.
@drummer78 I think the RTB ludwigs (same kit as the Counterparts kit?) sounded awesome too, but it just didnt have the range that the HYF/Presto kit had, couple that with the projection that the vibrafibed ludwigs and even the 94 kit sounds better than the DW's.... Dont get me wrong, I think the DW's in the recent tours have been great, but they almost sound comical, a little too much projection and resonance. I think Neils playing here (At the peak IMHO) really does alot for the sound too...
Did you ever notice though the discernable change in sound/tone from the Vapor Trails kit to the R30 one? To me, it boiled down to the heads he used. On Vapor Trails he used coated ones (as far as I can remember) and they sounded great. However, then on R30 he had the clear heads and they did not project in quite the same way. Also, their tone was duller/less "live". Still, to me, his best drum sound ever was that brief Ludwig era. Then again, I am geeking out on this thread.
@drummer78 And I wish DW would make him a 6" tom, because he has to crank the 8" up so high that it sounds like a timbale, in fact all his higher toms sound really timbale(esque)
@sgtpepper1138 6" single headed toms kick assssss. i agree.i have an old ludwig kit with a 6" single headed concert tom and theres nothing that sounds like it. my 6 8 10 and 12" singled headed toms are the best sounding ever. with a remo black dot..... heaven....
@dorian2112 6" single headed toms are cool, but the 6" (and 8", 10"... all except the gong bass drums) are all double headed on Neil's kit on this tour. He did away with single headed toms when he switched to Ludwig.
@drummer78 IMO I have to say that when he played Pearls was his best sound. I think DW sound like cardboard boxes. I would prefer him go back to Ludwig and throw these DW in the garbage. Of course someone out there is going to attack me for not liking DW. But it's only my opinion so chill please. Before you ask, I do play and had Tamas, Ludwigs, and then Pearl Masterworks. The latter ones were perfect to tune and had a great sound. I used coated heads on my Pearls. Awesome. Just awesome sound.
that was sweet. thank you. to see him improvise and change some of the most classic phrasing is cool. very rare. 5 stars. can you redo it with an amped sound? it would be worth it. it was like watchn a buddy rich type rare vid!
I think it was a music convention when I was in college years ago in the mid-90s. It was essentially a clearing house for rock memorabilia, which meant a lot of bootlegs.
anyone know what the name of the tour was that this was on? was it actually called the "Presto tour" or did it have another name?

no matter if he plays Tama, Ludwig or DW - his high toms always sound incredible - almost like timbales.

Wonder if he could just sit down and play that thing today. Chances are that the traditional grip wouldn't work with this layout.

My favorite Peart Drumset... You cant beat Neils HYF/Presto kit... the best sounding kit he ever played...

Where did you get this. Cool how it goes right into "Scars". Didn't know they played that live.
