  • Superb as always, see my videos if you're a fan of Show of Hands. A must see live!! this is great thanks for posting.

  • What is the song next "Downeaster Alexa"?

  • The Song is called „Cocaine Blues. Hannes Wader sing a german version, I guess Bob Dylan performed it before.

  • LOVE THE DOWNEASTER! - do you reckon he's tuned to C-G-D-A or what?

    Jimmybaino

  • I asked him what the instrument was, when I saw Show of Hands live, and he told me it was a tenor guitar, tuned D, G, B, E going upwards, same tuning as the top four strings on a normal guitar.

  • Possibly, but I'm pretty sure this is CGDG going by the chord shapes.

  • I had a play around on my tenor guitar - I reckon that low to high it's C-G-D-G.

Same tuning seems to work for the Youngstown vid by SIMMO7TS.

Saw them twice last year - Phil is a stunning musician.

  • This is awesome. I want a tenor guitar

  • Phil Beer has one of my favourite male singing voices ever....Like the stuff he did with the Albion band too.

  • What a man! What a performer! Seeing him live in Poole, Dorset on 5th March at Wessex Acoustic! Woohoo!

  • Magic, Dave of splinter village BZN, Stanford in the Vale folk festival, Folkforms & White horse folk festival.

  • My mate owns this very actual guitar now! g! The one Phil is playinHonnest! He bought it on holiday from a bloke. He is the third person to own it. SO jealous, sounds and looks like such a nice guitar, and is handmade!

  • Tenor guitars are coming back into fashion. They're (normally) tuned like a tenor banjo (C-G-D-A) and are great to play. (Thinks ... must get one...) :-) Will

  • Yeah, I agree they are cool I just bought one -- will go nicely with the mandolin and tenor banjo. I think it is interesting how much "thinner" the tenor's sound is compare to a 6 -stringer though.

  • He plays such a wonderful array of 'different' instruments. Top bloke indeed. And oh so cute :) *sigh*

  • top bloke indeed and fabalous talent

  • does any one know what the first tune is called???

  • The first song is The Downeaster "Alexa" by Billy Joel

  • what a brilliant cover

  • The first song is called 'The Downeaster Alexa' written by Billy Joel it is on a number of Billy Joel albums. There is an acoustic version by Show of Hands (Phil Beer & Steve Knightly) on their album 'Covers'. If you 'Google' the title there are a few interesting articles based around the title on the demise of the Long Island area fishermen.

  • Top man, is our Phil.

  • Fantastic, Who else can play every String Instrument faultlessly? Cheers Phil!

  • Steve howe (yes) can!
