I asked him what the instrument was, when I saw Show of Hands live, and he told me it was a tenor guitar, tuned D, G, B, E going upwards, same tuning as the top four strings on a normal guitar.
My mate owns this very actual guitar now! g! The one Phil is playinHonnest! He bought it on holiday from a bloke. He is the third person to own it. SO jealous, sounds and looks like such a nice guitar, and is handmade!
Tenor guitars are coming back into fashion. They're (normally) tuned like a tenor banjo (C-G-D-A) and are great to play. (Thinks ... must get one...) :-) Will
Yeah, I agree they are cool I just bought one -- will go nicely with the mandolin and tenor banjo. I think it is interesting how much "thinner" the tenor's sound is compare to a 6 -stringer though.
The first song is called 'The Downeaster Alexa' written by Billy Joel it is on a number of Billy Joel albums. There is an acoustic version by Show of Hands (Phil Beer & Steve Knightly) on their album 'Covers'. If you 'Google' the title there are a few interesting articles based around the title on the demise of the Long Island area fishermen.
What's the third song called? I love it!

Possibly, but I'm pretty sure this is CGDG going by the chord shapes.

I had a play around on my tenor guitar - I reckon that low to high it's C-G-D-G.
Same tuning seems to work for the Youngstown vid by SIMMO7TS.
Saw them twice last year - Phil is a stunning musician.
