  • What grit did you use on the belt sander? I was either going to use a sander or a grinder. I was trying to figure out which would be best.

  • if you were really picky what would you fill the rest of the pin holes with?

  • Where did you get the sporter stock from???

  • I am not a gun smith or a machinist, I am however a hobby blacksmith. I was wondering... the rivets for the rear site that didn't fit flush.... could you have secured them from the other side from moving while clamping the barrel firmly into a vise or something.... heat the end of the rivet and peen the hell out of it to fill in the drilled hole better? I make tongs which requires making a rivet and fitting it... that's just what came to mind when I saw this part.

  • What finish did you do on this barrel? Is that parkerizing? Anyone have a good place to send it to have this done?

  • you should have filled the holes with weld, not the pins

  • a basterd file lol

  • @travis199urkul That is what it is called. A bastard file is a file that has the cutting grooves that run in two different directions, instead of them all being running the same direction, parallel.

  • this is pretty awesome, thanks guys

  • Don't know if it's been said yet, but peening the pins in would have eliminated the gaps in the finished product. The round end of the ball-peen hammer is underrated.

  • your doing the same thing i am wanting to do but making my own bolt and im using the ati scope mount and ati synthetic stock. Im just using the gun for deer hunting though. i am going to polish the bolt and possibly jewel it. The one thing i really want to do is parkerize it but dont have the equipment and no one around her does it anymore. theyll only teflon coat it and its way outta my price range. Im gonna be 450 bucks in including the price of the gun itself.

  • Could you fill in those areas with a tack weld if you wanted to without damaging anything?

  • your vids are awsome man

  • I think it is importanant to note here that if you are looking for a scout configuration, that part you all are sanding off is a perfect weaver rail and those pin holes are a great way to keep your weaver scout scope mounts from moving on you.

  • how many inches is the sight base on the mosin 91/30? i was thinking of getting a 3/8 to picatinny adapter for it and was just wondering so i make sure to get the proper length one.

  • That Laminate stock looks very nice. I will look for the other videos to see the progress. Thanks for the video...

  • If you used a ball peen hammer and peened that front pin in place it may have filled that void when you ground it down. Just an idea. Like your series on this project.

  • my sights dony have the 2 pins

  • where can i get that stock

  • in my book thats a compliment...

  • When parkerizing a barrel, how do you keep the inside from getting parkerized? earplugs? wax?

  • Hey man, love the videos, very informative. I have a New England Westinghouse 1915 model. Will mine have the 3/8 dovetail as well. I wanted to make mine into a scout rifle or somthing of the sort, thanks for the videos and the info.

  • what did you use on the barrel? i like the way it turned out and am thinking of doing to my own.

  • Great work. Thumbs up.

  • I had the same problem with pin holes on my sight base. I thought about filling them in with silver solder but I thought that the bluing wouldn't look right.

  • I was thinking of taking a modern bolt action rifle, remingotn, savage, and converting it so it looks old. Cant alter a good rifle.

  • @Mauser2012 Yeah that would be a cool project. Just look at some of the modern CZs and that will give you some ideas.

  • @Mauser2012 why cant you wait just 50 years?

  • I know its too late and all, but for future reference, you could have taken a dremel to the pins and cut the ends off after you put them back into the gun, though it did come out very nice

  • how would you go about putting a new front sight on the shortened barrel. or cutting a dovetail for the original sight

  • @aerodynamicband You could probably go with a set of Williams peep sights if you wanted to. Either that or try some of the Marlin-style sights. Wouldn't be hard to do.

  • @aerodynamicband Uncle Larry has a video showing how to cut in a dovetail by hand on midwayusa's youtube channel.

  • @aerodynamicband You can use a M38 type front sight works the best. Though your barrel would have to be turned down.

  • @JSR990 Okay. Are you wanting to go with a Boyd's stock? You can order direct from them. The mounts are available directly from Rock Solid Industries. The rings can be purchased from Midway USA.

  • You sir, are the Bob Ross of gun refinishing.

  • @InvictusUnited Don't know whether to take that as a compliment or an insult....thanks? lol

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Haha, It was meant as a compliment, yes.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 InvictusUnited means that in a good way, I agree with his statement lol, you are a gun guru

  • @Iraqveteran8888 that would definently be a huge complement

now you just need to grow an afro like Bob

  • @Iraqveteran8888 More like Bob Vila.

  • @InvictusUnited Only if he Duracoats on some Happy Little trees when he is done.

  • @InvictusUnited No he is not. I have not seen a single happy little tree in any videos. ;)

  • @InvictusUnited why did i think the same thing

  • @JSR990 Okay. You paying for the base and rings?

  • why not fill the pin holes with a tac weld instead?

  • @SacoreyRugger You could do that I suppose. I wanted to try it with the pins to see how it would turn out, but the next one I do, I'll likely peen them and spot weld for good measure.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 when the guy from midway was filling in the locking screw holes on a mauser i think thats what he did, but when he was filling scope holes he did it with a set screw and filed off the head i think, if you wanted to look at midway usa's series on it for some different ideas

  • @SacoreyRugger I MIG welded, you get a hair line crack around it anyway. Maybe with more heat on the barrel like brazing or TIG welding. But like he said, its no big deal.

  • I'm wondering if you've thought about turning down the barrel shank to remove the markings.

  • @Gorbachev Yes, I have, but remember my videos are geared towards doing things on the cheap, so I know many people don't have access to a lathe.

  • I love these project videos dude! Very very cool.

  • @JSR990 Are you providing the parts?

  • @apoe1234 There's really no way around it. The cheapest ones I know of are sold by Midway USA

  • I am almost willing to bet your rifle is going to look 1000 times better than the build I am planning! love the vids man!

  • I saw a video where a guy used the old sight base to clamp his scope mounts too. I think he used 22 scope mounts.

    Nice looking finish!

  • Shame you don't have a lath to smooth out the barrel but, it looks like you did a nice job just with sand paper.

  • Would it shoot alright if you just left the iron sights on and did not use a scope?

  • @TheSouthernGentleman The gun is going to shoot as good as you can shoot it. Putting a scope on it will help you shoot thus improving the "accuracy", but the gun will shoot just as accurate without it.

  • @apoe1234 You can make your own if you have a welder.

  • @MrDowneast Yes, I considered it. Should have done that, but I'm happy with the results.

  • @apoe1234 i bought my off ebay works well 90 dallars

  • If it mattered to you enough, would you be able to get away with a spot of weld for those holes? TIG maybe?

  • @kalliste23 Absolutely! This was the first time I performed this operation, so for a future one, I may do that or possibly peen the pins flush.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 saw another vid where someone removed the sight and used 22mm base rings on that dovetail to mount a scoutscope. Looked pretty neat.

  • @kalliste23 That's what Ray did with his scout rifle.

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • This is a great series! I especially liked the shortening of the barrel and the re-crowning.

  • -- Fantastic work sir. Thank you for sharing!

  • : )

  • wow this gun has come together nicely sofar looks great cant wait to see 'er in one piece

  • I am really enjoying this process. It is very interesting to watch, as I'm not very familiar with Mosen's. You two seem to be having fun with this. Thanks for documenting it.

  • Can't wait to see this beast when it's done. Thanks IV8888.

  • lookin pretty good

  • really good video glad to see some one sporterizing a nagant and actually taking their time and making it look good enjoy all of your videos

  • Sweet I can't wait to see the finished rifle.

  • What is the usual cost of a nagant ? im 16 and will eventually go to college to be a gunsmith, so i am very interested about starting to hone my skills now. your vids have been very informitive thank you

  • @MrAnynoumous $100 flat.

  • @MrAnynoumous A "nagant" will usually be about $100. A "Mosin Nagant" on the other hand, can be from $60-$400. Your average 91/30 will be about $100.

  • This is very very interesting

  • Can't wait for the finished rifle.
