I don't think you can make it work as good as a new one, but cleaning one will certainly help. Of course, they're only a couple bucks each, so if you can get them out to clean them, you might as well replace them with new ones.

What do you mean? Champion is a good plug. I collect spark plugs and I've seen the other brands. There all good plugs at some level or another, but sometimes you'll notice poorly manufactured plugs from Brazil or China. Small engine plug quality is often neglected in mass production. Regular Autolite small engine plugs look poorly manufactured, so I use NGK, E3 or Champion.

Can someone help me? I have this 5hp engine and it works really well for about 20 minutes then it bogs out and i check the spark plug and its pitch black, i clean it then it works amazing for another 20 minutes and it just gets dirty really fast, its a cj8 plug...could it be bad gas or old oil?

How old is the engine? Check the air filter, change the oil, drain the gas and use fresh gas, and maybe try running some stuff called Sea Foam throgh it. Be sure to follow the directions on the can for small engine application. Maybe this things will help but they won't hurt. If the engine is old or has lots of hours on it the problem could be it is just worn out and in need of a rebuild or replacement.

Hmm...This could be the result of at least two phenomenons. The first question I have is... what kind of engine ( 2 or 4 cycle/stroke)? Use some carb cleaner for starts. If 4 cycle, then you may want to make observations like the manufacturer's stock plug # (proper heat range helps the plug stay clean)and the oil level before running and after to see if you're burning oil(use the stock grade of oil). If 2 cycle, then use stock plug # and if using premixed fuel, then check your mix ratio.

Also, check your air filter. If the air filter is made of paper and is black, brown or gray, replace it. If the air filter is made from a green or yellow foam or sponge, then clean it in a small tub of warm water and soap(repeat as necessary until dirt is gone). Let the filter dry or put it in the clothes dryer for a few minutes until dried.

sounds like your jets are misadjusted. A/F ratio is too rich, and thus when you are cold, it seems fine but when its warm you have too much fuel so it bogs. That also is why you get a dirty plug so fast.
