Let's see. The University owned the property and wanted to make a parking lot. Isn;t that their RIGHT! This was nothing like the free speech movement!
its kinda scary how such big crowds let so few people push them around, just cause they are wearing riot gear. This is what the 2nd amendment is for, to protect against government tyranny
I was too young to remember this at the time, but my mom was working as a secretary in Sproul Hall while these protests were going on. She said they had to close all the windows tight because of tear gas, but even so, some got in and made her feel ill. So sad that the police reacted the way they did. Hopefully, things are different now.
RIch white kids throwing tantrums and throwing rocks and bottles at the lower class white cops who they looked down on. No wonder some of the cops beat the hell out of these pricks.
@krushnoi It was a bunch of Jews leading those protests. They're always stirring up trouble wherever they go. They need to be exposed of immediately. They were trying to stir up a Communist revolution in the 60's with this shit.
Hello I'm a student at an east bay high school and am doing my project on the protests at Berkeley due to the budget cuts. Would it be possible that I could use some of this footage? If so, how could I transfer it to my project with the highest quality? Thanks.
I grew up in Berkeley, and Oakland. My friends parents went looking for her, while this was going on. They got beat up really bad, by the police, who had been up for about 3 days. I think there were a lot of court cases, over this.
OK.I cant stand these spoiled brats, i mean they taste terrible. The following goes for now and then.WHY DONT YOU JUST DROP OUT? If you REALLY wanted to change something and/or disagree so strongly with UCB policy..WHY DO YOU WANT thier degree? If you dont like BK do you protest? NO you drag your ass to MceDes. VMI (a PUBLIC university) only RECENTLY started LETTING GIRLS IN.The only changed under finacial presure from weak enrollment....Why protest then send your kids here? Spoiled Brats.nasty
its not necessarily the school itself they are protesting. they are protesting the war. this happened all over the country during 'nam. what about the kent state massacre? when the national guard came in and killed four students on campus for the protests... people were protesting the war especially when nixon who promised the end of the war decided to start a draft to go into cambodia.
Awesome. 70 was my last year there. I remember the TAC squad (they seemed 7 feet tall). Now my daughter is there and saw the 2/26/10 riot last night. But the reasons are so different. Do it politically, don't trash the school. Most of the rioters don't even go to Berkeley. I hope the police put them in jail and they have to pay for the damage.
Well, no, they were peacefully protesting, because they thought they could express grievences publicly in this country without tasting tear-gas.
But now days we know better.
We fight back, and we don't even wait anymore to be provoked by the police, because we know, just like the authorities knew all along, that we are in permanent conflict.
i agree, berkeley has changed since these days. The students are not as involved in political issues like they were back in these days.... My uncle took part in the demonstrations at berkeley, from what he described it seems like it was one hell of a time...
The so-called counter-culture is now the establishment in Berkeley......Talk about a closed-minded collective of intolerent ass-wipes!....They got their fat home in the hills and to hell with anyone else!.....NIMBYism at its finest.
oh my those were the daze.... events in Iran....vapors from tear-gas shooting down the street.....caused me recall.. these day's.. remember the classic photo of me picking up the gas-canister to throw back
i was in hong kong in "67" and they were first using wooden bullets againt protesters there. stuck between (angry)protesters and the H.K. police, we pushed in a bar as they tried to keeps us out. hiding-out then it was over and everyone left!
What a trip! I was in the service for 8 years, got out and came home to San Fran in 1970.
I remember riding on the bus and seeing "Question Authority" spray-painted on a wall. That completely blew my mind! The concept was totally alien to me.
I ended up in a rock & roll band and didn't get a haircut for 9 years.
I agree. Berkeley has become much more apathetic on political matters. I don't know if this is due to the controlled media of current years or if it is due to the paid militia that the US is currently using.
What you see tells us who you are... What I see is who I am ... This is the generation that changed the world Revoloution in the streets of America Fighting to stop The Vietnam War Fighting to preserve the planet , clean the air, clean the water... Human Rights Civil Rights Equal Rights Ammendment So what have you done lately??? Easy to criticize what you perceive BUT... Your perception was wrong The World Is A Better Place thanks to a generation that believed in a dream
There were three riots of varying sizes while I was at Berkeley. Aug 85, overflow crowds outside a non-student event at Pauley Ballroom resulted in a bunch of trashed storefronts along Bancroft and Telegraph. Then the anti-Apartheid riot the following Spring and a People's Park riot in Spring 89. All three times, any political message there might have been got lost in the noise of ratpackers and random kids just looking to cause mayhem and steal crap.
Wow, that was a great video! I first got to Cal in 2000, and obviously things are much different now...now tear gas on Sproul Plaza! But I do believe the spirit of these times pictured still exists, though in a much less overt fashion of course. Thanks for posting!!
Amazing footage. I love the way the students are standing up to the pigs. No one has balls like that now, when it's most needed. Thanx for posting this.
people never hear or see anything about this time in berkeley. i have lived in berkeley my whole life and have never seen videos of stuff like this in berkeley
Wow, you would never see this happen on the Berkeley campus today. The students are way less political and sedated by mass media and consumerism. Why protest when you have an iPod??
Thanks for taking this footage, preservinhg it, and posting it here. I like the Cal Marching Band soundtrack, too. That was how life was back there and then, with many Berkleyans whipsawed between the old "alma mater" ambience and the new Nixonian police state.
Thanks for posting this great video! Wow, I heard there was a lot happening here at Cal back in the day but wow, I don't know if I quite pictured it liked that!

You should be able to get the software to download it for free and then you have my permission to use it in your school project... you could also shoot it off the screen.
