I was too young to remember this at the time, but my mom was working as a secretary in Sproul Hall while these protests were going on. She said they had to close all the windows tight because of tear gas, but even so, some got in and made her feel ill. So sad that the police reacted the way they did. Hopefully, things are different now.

I grew up in Berkeley, and Oakland. My friends parents went looking for her, while this was going on. They got beat up really bad, by the police, who had been up for about 3 days. I think there were a lot of court cases, over this.

its not necessarily the school itself they are protesting. they are protesting the war. this happened all over the country during 'nam. what about the kent state massacre? when the national guard came in and killed four students on campus for the protests... people were protesting the war especially when nixon who promised the end of the war decided to start a draft to go into cambodia.

Awesome. 70 was my last year there. I remember the TAC squad (they seemed 7 feet tall). Now my daughter is there and saw the 2/26/10 riot last night. But the reasons are so different. Do it politically, don't trash the school. Most of the rioters don't even go to Berkeley. I hope the police put them in jail and they have to pay for the damage.

What a trip! I was in the service for 8 years, got out and came home to San Fran in 1970.

I remember riding on the bus and seeing "Question Authority" spray-painted on a wall. That completely blew my mind! The concept was totally alien to me.

I ended up in a rock & roll band and didn't get a haircut for 9 years.

There were three riots of varying sizes while I was at Berkeley. Aug 85, overflow crowds outside a non-student event at Pauley Ballroom resulted in a bunch of trashed storefronts along Bancroft and Telegraph. Then the anti-Apartheid riot the following Spring and a People's Park riot in Spring 89. All three times, any political message there might have been got lost in the noise of ratpackers and random kids just looking to cause mayhem and steal crap.

Wow, that was a great video! I first got to Cal in 2000, and obviously things are much different now...now tear gas on Sproul Plaza! But I do believe the spirit of these times pictured still exists, though in a much less overt fashion of course. Thanks for posting!!
