Women tend to become defensive if someone calls their man unattractive; hence all the posters who rush to Peter's defence. The men interviewed in the video are not slighting Peter by saying he's unattractive; they call attention to his greater accomplishments, a perspective unspoiled by sentiment. We do Peter Lorre a disservice if we dwell on his superficial attributes. Looks fade as his did in later years. We're all more than the sum of our physical parts. Who wants to be remembered for that?
@CDU916 Oh I definitely agree that fans shouldn't get too obsessed with defending looks over talent. It's just that there's always been so much fuss about how weird and unattractive he was and fans start to get tired of it, hehe.
Those of us who love Peter are not responding to his looks alone but his whole persona: his voice, posture, mannerisms as they work in tandem with his appearance. If Lorre had a flat personality, who would insist he was handsome? The men interviewed speak of "handsome" in the most traditional way: chiselled like Gable or pretty boy like Tyrone Power. I doubt they would call themselves handsome but their wives might. Handsome is superficial; Peter Lorre transcends that definition in every way.
i definetely think lorre was sexy, yea maybe he didnt have the convention handsome looks but thats what makes me totally dig him. bug eyes, funny teeth and all. he had refined features and a sweet set of lips on him. he was a peculiar creature and that is what makes him stand out to me. i would choose him over a muscle man any day.
Christmas eve my step mom and my father were watching Arsinic and old lace funny right? well I knew the VOICE but not the man. When I saw the movie I fell in love with his preformances. I also started imitating him! LOL true story
"Not handsome"? My flaming butt!! He was a VERY FIIIIINNNNNE man. I think my eyes and brain have caught fire from the shear HOTNESS of Peter Lorre's Lorre factor (the ability look hot but still have some narrow minded so-and-so's call you ugly).
I've read from fans before that had Peter been a young actor in the '60s he might have had more options because that's when they were starting to give lead roles to more unconventional looking actors.
It's called "Call the Usual Suspects: The Craft of the Character Actor", a special feature on the DVD of "All Through the Night"... a very interesting documentary, except... Peter NOT handsome??? That man who said that is obviously insane.
I will never understand why so many people say that Peter wasn't good looking. Seriously, have you ever looked really closely at Humphrey Bogart? He may have been talented and I will even grant you that he was charming in a way, but most of the time he looked like he just crawled out from under a rock. Peter was by far the better looking of the two!
They're right - Peter wasn't handsome. He was BEAUTIFUL. He transcended mere handsomeness. Any silly bugger can be handsome, with all the vapidity that denotes - but Peter was beautiful. And male beauty is such a rare and precious commodity. Dwight Frye had this, also, and was in his own way as unusual as Peter.
Thanks for posting this. Quite wonderful. You rock. :)
Peter "played" a Boston Terrier -- in a Disney film called "The Shaggy D.A.". In the "dog pound" sequence. Bogie "played" a bloodhound. Mae West "played" a poodle. Jimmy Cagney and Eddie G. Robinson were "in" the scene, too. As dogs.
Thanks so much for posting this!!! Yes, I do feel very protective when it comes to poor Peter. It seems that men, especially, just don't "get" him, and why he really was fabulously attractive to women. But that's OK. We know. :)
That end had me laughing! Oh God why do I have love him...

"He was not certainly handsome."
Eh, remember that's from a guy's point of view. I think women are a bit more open about the kinds of people they find attractive, hehe. :)

God, Peter thrills me on every level, ev-er-y level. When I think about how beautiful he is, I want to self combust from lust, seriously.
Yes, I have to say that Peter is magically delicious!
