Magnets may cause more problems than it solves for camera. The magnetic field if strong enough may distort the sensor (I don't know what it's made of). It could also effect the memory cards. But I hope they can put magnetic stabilization in their lenses one day. Imagine not needing a tripod or a monopod.
Wow this is awesome! Canon electronic stabilization is great. Have you ever tried mechanical stabilization with high-end binoculars? That's when the whole optical system floats on magnets the moment you press the stabilization button. No batteries, no gyros, no moving parts. Magnar Optics dot com. Check it out.
@snaphappy7530 Too many mechanical parts, just like in zoom lenses. I recently got an 85mm f/1.4 prime lens, and I use it almost exclusively. But I am old, so take a slant on me.
@dvamateur IS is good for guys who shoot in bad light conditions. If you don't shoot in bad light, you don't need it. IMO I would take 50mm 1.8 without IS than 50 f2.4 with IS
@veyronman I didn't say that 600mm lens doesn't need it. It is good to have it with long tele lenses. But I don't see point it when it decreases f stop. With 400, 500 and 600mm IS is very nice.
@dvamateur Too much electronics! The whole system can be just hung on magnets without any hectic movement. Canon is stuck with their electronic stabilizing technology and that's the best they can do. Check out Zeiss 20x60 cardanic suspension or Magnar Optics Magnar 20x50 for example. Well of course those binoculars are 3K+, but so worth it.
idk whats the differnece between is and usm
joshlandes1 2 months ago
@joshlandes1 IS is the actual image stabilization, USM stands for Ultrasonic Motor, which is the super quiet autofocus system.

I'm new to this concept what exactly am I seeing, and what's awesome about it?
stone4bread 4 months ago
@stone4bread the element moves inside the lens to counteract camera shake, so smoother video and sharper images.

After I've seen this, I don't think I'll ever buy a stabilized lens. It looks kind of flimsy compared to a regular lens.
