  • Louis had a tremendous jab, great power in both hands and always kept his balance. Baer, on the other hand did not seem to know how to use the most basic punch in boxing, the jab. He looked more like a brawler, and against Louis, he was not going to get away with that. In Baer's favour he took some very heavy punishment, before he succumbed. Louis, probably would have beaten anybody in history, except Ali, who was a bigger man (important), and who had unnatural mobility in the ring.

  • Triple left hook at 7:23, you just don't see that much anymore. The greatest boxer ever.

  • My sincerest respect to Max Baer for taking the most viscious triple left hook combo ever thrown by a heavyweight boxer, to stay on his feet until hook number 3. Not to mention the previous left hook and right uppercut by Loius. Many things can be said about Baer, but he took a shot better than most men in the heavyweight division.

  • Joe Louis autobiography, page 67:

"I've always considered the Baer fight my greatest. I've never had better hand speed; I felt so good I knew I could have fought for 2 or 3 days straight."

  • I respect Baer for coming out and lasting as long as he did in the 4th after those vicious combos in the third round

  • Joe took him out but they became very good friends later on.

  • That is the best combo i have ever seen so clean and with such precision.

  • Were boxing rounds 2 minutes back then?

  • @Donal111 No. I think the rounds has been cut a few seconds short in the video for some reason

  • why did you use the words "the youthful Negro"

  • @Aggroymustang - its in "quotes" meaning someone, in this case a sports reporter from 1935, wrote it ...

  • @MaxiesGal hmph...didn't even notice the quotation marks...btw i wasn't trying to start an argument, i was just wonderin

  • Max Baer was game threw a few good combinations on Louis. The only thing Louis combinations hurted Bear more.Baer try to measure Louis with his left but did'nt have a right cross behind it.When Louis finally knock down Baer it took the fight out from him from than on Baer was scare to mix it up with Louis.

  • Boxing was some serious business back in Louis day. No backing up no ducking fighters. Joe Louis was great fighter, that combo on Baer was truly an amazing show.

  • 1:53 Joe never got enough credit for his jab

  • 2:17, it got exciting, and even appeared as though Baer had a chance of smothering the Louis fire. But, nope. Louis was too smart, and powerful (and athletic) to lose the better half of that exchange. 'Good stuff.

  • The film is running too fast.

Louis never hopped around jerkily like that.

  • beautiful work at the end, sneaking in that lead right and then with the left hook. wicked.

  • Louis was a real ring legend, great fighter for his time I just think he's slightly overrated when compared to the likes of Ali, Liston and Frazier. Of course he should be in the top ten yet for me he is just off the No.1 spot.

This Louis would destroy any modern heavy with easy.

  • i c a bit of joe louis in rocky marciano

  • @Allrightteam I thought Max was wearing the star???

  • he definately looks like his right hand hurt him alot

  • Anyone who says that Louis was just a straight up brawler needs to take a good long look at this fight. Perfect technique. He circles him, keeps Baer off balance by poping that jab and moving, throws combinations, puches from all angles, moves his head, keeps his hands up, and keeps Baer at the end of his punches. The man was a true master of the sweet science. We need boxers like this now. RIP Joe Louis.

  • What's with him wearing the star of David?

  • @GitarrPwnz He was Jewish.

  • @aitraining And German?

  • @GitarrPwnz Yes. There were millions of German jews. His mom was Jewish. I don't know how he was raised but the star of David and considering the time fram of this fight and the early stages of their persecution in Germany shows he had sympothy - if not a full practicing Jew. I'm not sue.

  • @aitraining Thanks man I had no idea.

  • The quality of this video is very good.

  • Cognitive dissonance is so weird... how Blacks were treated poorly, but when it came to boxing, Joe Louis was almost everyone's hero (him and Max Baer). When I look at this, I don't even notice color- just two of the greatest boxers ever.

  • piston jab from louis.

  • Funny thing about the Novacaine, would it have mattered? As far as I know Louis was never knocked down by a right until much later.

Louis tilted his head to his right, making it a flat target for left hooks. Look at his fight with Gallento as a younger man. For that reason Joe Louis could take about anyone's Right, including Baer's (although we'll never REALLY know...) but Louis was very susceptible to going down after a clean left even from smaller fighters of that day.

  • @tftmc Problem is, to get off a left hook on Louis was asking for one of his uppercuts to land on your chin, not something you want. And back then, chest to chest fighting meant uppercuts, than who ever got lower and inside would smack theirr forehead against the opponent's chin as your going in & grabbing, than back to fighting.

But it happened more than once, Lewis got knocked down by lefts from guys a lot less powerful & conditioned than Baer.

  • It hurts me to see a great fighter like max baer to lose this way. As far as I know louis was 23 here and baer was 30. I can't be sure of the exact ages but louis was several years younger. I know baer hurt his right hand before the fight how anyone could deny this I don't know, he barely threw his right. Max had always been known for the power in his right, it clearly wasn't here. Its so sad to see max pawing out his left with no conviction, knowing he hadn't the right to follow it up.

  • I think Maxie could have done a lot better if his hand wasn't injured and shot up full of novocaine.

  • Louis always gets knocked on because of his speed. Of course he wasn't a fast dancer who would hop around like a rabbit like Ali did, but he was no slower than any other heavyweight. He was very subtle with his movement, was excellent at cutting off the ring, and had the fastest hands of any heavyweight.

  • i wonder if the outcome would have been any different if the bell didnt ring at 4:53. Baer landed some bombs there...especially that infamous looping right! knocked Louis around quite a bit there

  • Very interesting fight Louis established the jab while Baer just sticks out his left hand. Baer's style not very good against a fighter who can punch like he can.

  • you're the greatest joe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think Mike Tyson at his peak would have beaten Joe.

  • @TennisShow , maybe....but I got Joe if he establishes the jab.

  • Thanks for posting Cat.

  • They all go on when they shouldn't,thats something only fighters can explain.Minimalist Ali is very well put.Great fighter Joe louis, not that quick but very very skillful, patient scientific fighter..

  • he was very quick but deceptive with it.

  • Max Baer looks fat and sluggish here... = P

Still, my favourite! I don't know if he would have won, even if he were in peak form, but I'm sure were he a little fitter it would have been more of a fight.

  • Thats because Joe was so damn good...

  • Joe knew how to fight Max the right way....Max was very lethargic and complacenet in the ring and never used his left properly, plus he kept it way too low.....It seemed some fights Max spent more time pulling up his pants than boxing. That wasn't a hinderance agsist most opponents but a blunder againt someone like Louis.....Joe just waited for the right moment and got his right in and Max was done.

  • Max's hand must have been really bad. He had an steel fist, there was concret or rock in his gloves. His punch (the one that broke Carnera, Schmeling, Galento, Campbell) should battered Louis, left him in worst conditions than here.

  • A little note on that fight: Louis actually dieted down for that fight so that he could come in lighter so that people wouldn't deem it a complete mismatch when he fought the lighter Billy Conn. This caused Louis to come in "flat" something his trainer wasn't too happy about since Joe did it on his own. That said; remember the rematch as well as the result in that first fight. Although it could be argued neither was peak anymore because of the layoff. Shame.

  • But yes, there is an advantage to having the speed and skill set like the LH Billy Conn vs. bigger men: you can use your speed and agility to keep a distance but it also takes a lot of energy to keep it up and what Louis was doing was keeping Conn on the move and when in close, he went to the body to slow Conn down so that he would have to fight toe to toe in spurts which cost him the fight in the end. "You can run but you can't hide."

  • 4:55 Louis had toooo much luck... it would be another history but the bell saved him

  • You never know. Louis had been hurt, even put down before and came back to win. Nothing out of the ordinary with him. He didn't look hurt by the way. Notice he was rolling with the punches after that big right. He was aware.

  • It was a joke....

    whities, blackies.

  • What was classy about Baer was his friendship and open affection for Louis at a time when that still was not accepted.

  • Louis struggled with a LIGHTNING FAST and SUPERB BOXER Billy Conn. Rocky was simply a go for the knockout guy. A younger Louis, one of the great "finishers" into the late rounds, would not have allowed that. But why do we speculate like this? We're all fans and we're all nuts!

  • Granted....

but Louis did struggle against Buddy Baer.

  • This fight united America at the time, this is history, screw arian (spelling?) supremacy!

  • No it didn't ! The whiteys were freaking over a gasp black man working his way up to a shot at the title, and when Louis won, the police were all up in the black's butts for celebrating the victory ! Maybe you're thinking of Baer OR Louis fighting against the German Max Schmeling during Hitler's reign ???

  • Wonder how the blackies felt about the whites coming down on them.

  • Since they had no rights, they had to hold their tongues, school their expressions, keep their anger in check. I don't think we can comprehend how horribly unfair and inhuman it must've been to live in such an atmosphere ... at least blacks now have the law behind them to prevent such blatant, public actions, but methinks all too often, whites have just gotten sneakier at pulling the same crap.

  • Very much enjoyed seeing this one again. I Also thought Joe was so reserved was because of Jack Johnson. Joe was told to "hold his tongue" by his managers?

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • @MaxiesGal , today it's the other way around . Kid's are now taught to be ashamed of being Caucasion, Irish, Iralian, Polish or etc. And GOD FORBID if one brings up Rocky Marciano!!! All excuses are made why Marciano retired as the only Undefeated Heavyweight Champion. If it were Joe Frazier who retired as an undefeated Heavyweight Champion, I pick Frazier because his style and Height is simular to Marciano's, he would've been dubbed as the Greatest Undefeated Heavyweight Champion ever

  • @2READYCRETE - Coming from this Irish-Scottish-German-Polish girl, well said ! I wonder, if Floyd Mayweather retires undefeated, what they'll say about him decades down the road ?

  • @MaxiesGal The same they'll say about Joe Calzeghe...Hoooooo hummmm. (yawn)

  • Joe Louis!!!!! Go, Joe, go!!!

  • Just wanted to let Maxie's fans know that, based on some family history info I provided to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Max Baer will be among its inductees for 2010.

  • is Jethro going to make a speech in honor of his father?...or even be there in his plastic self

  • Louis was great. But slow-moving and shuffling Joe Louis wouldn't have been able to hit Ali. Ali would beat him.

  • Louis fought as they say Bums of the month. Not so, these guys were great and could hold their ground with the modern fighters we have now. Nova was fast and strong had a great record also; Galento looked bad, but had a great hook. Look at his record..

  • I don't think Ali would've won that one. Ali is phenominal though. A great champion, talked a little too much for my taste, but the man fought the fights and had the success to prove him a great champion. Top 10 heavyweights ever easy. But Joe Louis is the best.

  • it's because of the novacain read (more info)

  • @TheMRgel - thank you ! People endlessly complain about Baer's performance here, but few bother to READ THE FACTS !

  • Except for the first few rounds, Max Baer

hardly used his right hand to throw a punch, and I don't understand why. You

got to let your hands go--that's what you're

in the ring for. Because if nothing else, you have the chance of getting lucky and catch

your opponent with a lucky punch

  • He had broken his hand in the Braddock fight apparently and his right was re-fractured straight away in training for this fight, so I've heard. They injected painkiller into him but obviously it wasn't enough and he probably didn't fancy destroying his hand permanently. It's hearsay, but it explains why.

  • @JoeFraze - Its fact. The son of Baer's accountant for 30 odd years contacted me to share the Novacain injection story. I cover it on my website.

  • Very hard to avoid getting hit against Joe Louis, he's so skillfull, methodical and powerful that just letting your hands go with him is a lot more dangerous than doing it to a typical pugilist. Although that is the only reason Schmelling beat him in their first match was a lucky punch. Then Louis learned and avenged his loss to Scmelling with a first round brutal battery. So maybe that's why Baer was cautious inspite of the fact that he had one of the heaviest hands ever.

  • no way to be joe louise in his prime...pound for pound the greastest boxer of all time...with sugar ray robinson second.

  • The only argument for that would be the other way around, but I agree with you. I hate when I see top ten heavyweight lists that have Ali ahead of Louis, Marciano and Johnson. That really bothers me. Ali was great but Joe Louis would've not just beat him but stopped him and Marciano would've too. Watching Louis fight is like watching a man (the opponent) and a machine (louis). He is so methodical and dangerous, he litterally looks like an industructible robot in the ring.

  • Well no, I totally agree with you about Joe

Louis's boxing skills. Joe Louis is my idol.

But the point I was trying to make is that

    regardless of your opponent's awesome

skills, there's no point to get in the ring if

you're not gonna throw punches, you know. Like I said, if nothing else you could get lucky with one punch.

  • Oh I agree with you completely, I was just making a statement of observation. You and I can say that not being in maxy cap's spot. I was just saying I can imagine how deterring it must have been when you're just trying to find an opening on Louis only to get one of his thunderous straight shots right in your mouth. Lol, that can't be to encouraging. But nevertheless you're right, because if there's no way out and you're getting pounded anyway there are two possibilities if you let your hands fly

  • Absolutely! You're gonna get your ass

whooped anyway, so you might as well do

something. But Joe was a text book. I really think that fighters today should watch Joe's videos as part of their training.

  • 1) you get lucky land a perfect shot and get the KO and go home early

    or

    2) you miss grossly and you get countered with a crushing shot, get KOd and escape the rounds of onslought you would've sustained and go home early.

If you're going to get KOd anyway you might as well swing. You're absolutely right.

  • Marciano...watch...slow and small (remember also that he beat Louis when Louis was YEARS past his prime..about 37...). Ali was about 5-6 inches taller, 25 lbs heavier...MUCH faster...of course...we're all just guessing

  • bumble: i think Marciano would have beaten Ali. Rocky had a powerful punch that if he caught you the rest would be history.

  • Of course, we can only wonder. But, look at Marciano fights. He was relatively slow. When would he have gotten to Ali? Ali was so much bigger and faster....well...thanks for the polite response.

  • Bee: Marciano fought Louis when Louis was way over the hill. That was not the real Louis, that fight should have never been. Lou Nova was fast and Joe got to him in the early rounds.

  • I agree o wise man...Louis in his prime..would have killed the Rock...Nova and Ali...come on guy...no comparison. Louis and Ali...wow....tough for both...NO decision (on my part!!!)

  • bee: Im trying to find someone for the fight of Louis Vs. John Henry Lewis to post on youtube. John Henry was just as fast as Ali Louis destroyed John Henry in the 1st.round.

  • burtwiseman:

Nice little article by Monte D. Cox called "How Joe Louis Would Have Beaten Muhammad Ali!"

Now I'm not so sure a peak Louis could have beaten a peak Ali but still a good read.

Both had flaws so you never know.

  • Wind: Too bad you nev er saw the Louis/Nova fight. Lou Nova was fast had a quick jab and his moves were lightning.

Look at his record. A prime Nova would have easily beaten a prime Ali on a decision in 15 rounds. Lou Nova was the most underated fighter in history.

  • It wasn't the "real" Joe Louis?

    Now that just sounds silly.

  • @burtwiseman ali survived punches from the hardest hitters eva, frazier , shavers etc

  • @twrules1 - Frazier knocked Ali out and earlier in his career he was flooded by Henry Cooper and the only reason he didn't lose was because the bell saved him - he wasn't getting up before 10. I'm not saying Ali had a glass jaw or anything like that but just wants to point out he was far from invincible and could be knocked out like anyone else.

  • @Freddie19Frazier din not knock Ali out,, he knocked him down. Ali had been down 3 time in his career- Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper, and Joe Frazier.

  • @Freddie1980 Sonny Banks knocked Ali down too. I don't count the Wepner knockdown. Wepner stepped on Ali's foot, then hit him and then stepped off his foot. Louis is my hero! Ali did have Frazier in trouble in the 2nd round of the second fight. Tony Perez the ref thought he heard the bell(?) and ended the round too soon!

  • no doubt about it...louis was the best pound for pound fighter of all time....my grandfather was at this contest in 35,....i recall him telling me that in rounds 4 and 5 he could her the blows from his seat...at least 20 rows back...and amongst 88,000 screaming true blue new york accents....iconic days and an iconic fighter....joe would have knocked out Ali...for sure...and i love Ali too.

  • billy conn made the same mistake of trying to brawl with the brown bomber .the only way to fight a prime joe louis was to ware him down and stay on the outside

  • Conn-Louis I ? Conn was winning until he got careless at the end ?

  • Conn tried to slug with joe louis trying to knock him out ..and it back fired

  • 0:21 it looks as though max baer went on a relentless attack on joe louis out of panic throwing his best shots and .he tried to end it early ....joe louis quickly came right back and beat the hell out of max baer

  • Agreed Fashizze, I always refer to it as the "shoot his wad moment."

  • every young fighter should be made to watch this fight , louis's concentration - his eyes almost never leave his opponent , his short punching and his economy of not wasting punches , how about that triple left hook at the end of round 3 - louis a handful for any champion of any generation.

  • I completely agree!

  • The description says he (Baer) went down in round 2, but he goes down twice in round three? Maybe just a typo or something. I'm not trying to bitch, but someone should change it if it's wrong. I watched round two at least three times to see if I missed it. I'm stupid.

  • Nah you're not stupid, you're just observant, whereas I read a news article to write my spiel ... I'll do a review and a rewrite this week. Thanks for the heads up !

  • There was brief and scary moment there for Louis in the 1st round. Max caught him with a few shots in the corner stunning Louis ever so briefly, and at that moment Max looked close to landing a big, fight-changing punch, but Louis countered so quickly and powerfully and Max was never the same after that.

  • It's amazing how wide Max's shoulders were , he landed some good looping rights from a distance. The problem is Max stood right in front of Louis, and Joe was punishing him on the inside. I think Max had God given punching power but didn't firm up the rest of his boxing skills. I think Max could do well in today's heavyweight alphabet soup, provided he trained harder.

  • Now back to Max...I loved the guy and knew and read about him when I was in my 20's. The old expression rings true here..I've forgotten more than you'll ever know.

  • LOL...you are 46..I'm almost 57, You are young and uninformed in my eyes sonny. Ali had Parkinson's when he fought Holmes. You know nothing like 98 % of the wannabe on this site,

  • Hey Gents, the video is about Louis-Baer, take it somewhere else okay, thanks !

    ~ The Management

  • What a great boxer was Joe. It is amazing thar Baer could survive round 1. He had a tough chin. Do you know if Louis was the first man to send him to the canvas?

Louis had a great chin too. He took some power punches from Baer.

  • Yes this was the first time Baer was ever sent to the canvas.

  • Man Louis was such a great fighter in those days!

  • i dunno if joe was the hardest puncher to ever hit but his combination punching was quite possibly the hardest to absorb for any fighter, the only guy i can name that has combination punches that hard was a Prime mike tyson

  • it's a beautiful thing to watch is Louis but The G.O.A.T. belongs to Ali. Joe was just an outstanding boxer puncher.

  • hello, joe louis was champion for nearly 12 years STRAIGHT

  • hi back and what was it 25 title defences? Ali would decision him. A great in Louis. No argument.

  • Joe Louis was the most amazing heavyweight ever. There is no heavyweight today who could tie his shoe laces.

Ali was a disgrace. When he won the title he called Joe Louis an Uncle Tom. Joe was a great and decent man who would have taken Ali out.

As far as class goes, Joe epitomized it and Ali had none.

  • Your right, Ali did misinterpret Joe's quiet un-braggadocios personality as being an Uncle Tom. BUT Joe really couldn't handle Ali in a Prime vs Prime fight. Now if there was 1 fighter in the world that COULD do it, it's be Joe Louis, but Ali's head movement was faster than Joe's punches. Ali's hands would overwhelm him, and Ali gets every possible decision, a possible late TKO. Joe's only chance was a knockout.

  • I watched the recent "Thrilla in Manilla" documentary and it certainly didn't display Ali in a positive light !

  • Check out the book, "Ghosts of Manilla" by Mark Kram. That one sheds further light on just how despicable a person Ali was. The truth is finally starting to come out about him. I'll never forgive him for calling Joe Louis an Uncle Tom.

  • Thanks BB, I read alot of non-fiction, will definitely seek the book out. The fact that Ali cannot speak anymore, when he was such a loud mouth in his day, must irk the shit out of him now ! An example of 'what goes around comes around' perhaps ?

  • @bbxx44

You're nuts. Both were great heavyweights, but Ali was and still is the G.O.A.T.

  • Man Joe was an outstanding puncher. The best blend of speed, power, timing, and accuracy the heavyweight division has ever seen.

    THE GOAT!

  • joe louis has done so much for the USA. and then they still put joe in debts! thats horrible! hate them for doing that.

  • joe was THE GREATEST!

  • The top men at the top of the sport. My Dad lived in that era and always told me Louis was the best...ever. Watching him move, and the economy of his delivery makes me agree. I don't think anyone could touch this man in his prime. You were right, Dad.

  • Indeed ... my Father remembers listening to Louis-Schmeling I on the radio as a child, and followed Joe throughout his career and beyond. He always spoke with awe and reverence about Joe's exceptional skills.

  • Joe wastes nothing. Beautiful lokoing fighter, Very impressive.

  • 'wastes nothing' what an apt coupla words ! I was just watching him vs. Marciano a few nights ago, and even though the ending was so sad, there were still moments of pure grace and power, he was definitely one of kind !

  • a joe louis se le ve un box con estilo, muy diferente y avanzado a sus predecesores

  • ¡Sí! Mucho estilo, tolerancia, energía y belleza de hecho...

  • Many old timers alway insisted that this was the fight louis was at his absolute best.Never had his reflexes been this sharp,he was able to easily slip punches and his counters were dynamite. They might have been right.

  • I believe Joe himself was quoted as saying that ... though he did say that he'd never had to hit so hard and so many times to get Max to go down !

  • Joe louis= miniature, compact , muscular, strong and nimble and quick

  • 193......?

  • September 25, 1935

  • Joe Louis was the man!!

  • i like the old ballroom music as Louis slams the left hook home.
