Kate Winslet is my favorite actress, but I hold Emma Thompson's acting in this and in Remains of the Day to be the finest I've ever seen. Not overly dramatic, but highly intelligent and very, very real. She conveys more information with her eyes than anyone I've ever seen.
@Victorian9322 Both - Marianne is deeply upset by this news because she hoped that Elinor would at least find happiness with Edward, after her own misfortunes with Willouby. Remember, Marianne did not know previously that Edward and Lucy were connected. Her cries are profound in this scene due to her feeling the loss of men they each loved.
One of my favorite quotes from this movie: "What do you know of my heart? What do you know of anything but your own suffering? ... Believe me, Marianne, had I not been bound to silence I could have provided proof enough of a broken heart, even for you!"
Elinor says that Edward will be happy knowing that he kept his word and tries to convince herself that this is true. She is a woman of true nobility and character. In this scene she painfully places credibility over emotion. Perhaps this is why we love her so much.
She's terrible cold...and she would have lost Edward if Lucy wouldn't let him go ==_ come on Wilohbey left Marianne , not because she was sad, but because he finded better...and Elinor should show more feelings ..If i would be in Eddie's place I would have thought she feels nothing for me...I do not say that she should cry or smth like this, but it is so hard to tell him the true and to give vent to hers feelings even for ONE TIME IN HER LIFE!
What I love the most about this scene, other than the fact that Emma Thompson played it beautifully, is that even in the end Elinor is still the one taking care of Marianne, she's still the one comforting her. Elinor just revealed the biggest secret she's been keeping, she made her feelings very well known, and though I love Marianne and am not surprised that she teared up because I did as well, it's Elinor that ends up comforting her. Brilliant!
"After all... that is bewitching in the idea of one's happiness entirely depending on one person, it is not always possible and we must accept." I love that!
One of my favorite scenes of my favorite movie!! Thanks for the post.
the BEST clips in the movie. I absolutely love the "face to face" between the two sisters, and how Marianne realizes her sister has feelings of her owns, but just couldn't show them. And Elinor tries to reason herself, breaks down, begins crying...and ends up comforting, once more, her sister!

Why am I the modern day equivalent of Elinor? You know, I think every woman has felt like both of these girls at least once in their lives.

Kate Winslet is superb in this scene as well....she didn't receive as much recognition as Emma.
