@ceterafan123 have you got one? i am thinking of gettting an ereader and just dunno what to get. Can you buy ebooks off of waterstones to put onto the kindle? thanks if you answer
@LeonProof2007 I'd say that ppl who are interested in the politics of our country would read Alan Greenspan. (Hhhmm.... You're stupid as hell...) The guy is an Arab and appears that he's Kuwaiti. They tend to read more educational books rather than titles such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...
i found that the best way to get music onto the device, was to either download media go, put your SD card into the computer and then copy your music from there, or you can just drag the selected music into the Reader Library and sync it from there
If it has a build in dictionary and thesaurus or you could buy it that be cool, and would you be able to buy banned books or material, I assume since we are paying for the book files.
This is a gorgeous overview. I think this device import the open and free .epub format. I have an anatomy of the file format described in a video. Cut and past on the end of the video address: vvGrFZdSDww
OMG, and again sony delivers a e-reader with a very reflective screen. They should look at the Onyx Boox or Irex DR800S(G) with wacom screen to see how its done.
That's funny yeah..I am staying in Singapore and Sony e-book is not available here at all at Sony or any electronic stores. I wonder how can I obtain this product other then going to the US to obtain one.
The Kindle is a technological piece of garbage with unecessary proprietary software implementation. I give props to Sony for realizing readers don't want to be held down by the tyrannical oppresion that is the excuse for DRM management!
LotusElise05, that is your own opinion. I own the Sony Reader, and I can tell you taht since my sister owns a kindle I would just arther own the kindle. However that is your opinion and I respect that. However, in my point of view, the reader is just to complicated with its MANY unecesary buttons, and plugpoints
One thing about this system, how much are the books to buy and download? I know it comes with 15 free books, but how much do people have to spend if they want more?
@wayneleon100 they are really expensive if you want to buy them from the sony page, BUT the good thing with the sony reader is that you can buy the book from whatever page you want! It reads many different file types.
Kindle bites. No epub support. Amazons book store uses a proprietary format, so if you want to switch to a different eReader, all your kindle books are lost.
Thank you for the review. Are there any issues with viewing PDF files at all? Does this thing read other languages well? Are there any problems? I see you showed arabic so I'm assuming there are no issues, but I want to hear it confirmed.
From what I can see from the specs on the sony website, its compatible with msWord, pdf, several ebook formats and text formats. So you can download free (public domain) ebooks from google library or any ebook store and they should work fine.
As far as I can tell you could write your own book in Word and then put it on your reader. On the Kindle (the Amazon reader) you can only get the books from Amazon, which means paying more money overall.
yes I think so you should buy it to your mother. I've bought one for my mother and she loved it she get used to use in a half of an hour.
it's very easy to use you just have to teach her for 10 minuts and she can do it alone, but I think that you should load the books for her because it could too much for her
This will be like the first ipod that ever came out....people thought it was so cool and it was also super expensive. They're going to come out with way better version with better features over the next few years and it will probably be at a much lower price. So I would probably just wait it put to see how people react to the reader and stick to good ol' paper for now :)
This eBook can be used as a normal PDA on which to take notes and write as on a sheet of paper? Since PDAs are now fairly small screen (3.5 inches is standard) I would like to purchase an electronic PDA similar to the old with the big screen. What can I say? I do not care to use it to read books, but as the agenda? Thanks for your reply! :)
I received my device yesterday and I really like it. I couldn't enlarge the Arabic text though.when I click on S, M, L or XL its all the same. Is it the same with you?
Understand that this is new technology, that is why the price is so high. Consider what we all know about technology, over time, it gets cheaper.
No, a Kindle or Sony Reader is not a wise purchase at this time. However, in the future, since this technology will allow you to carry all your text books, personal books, and I'm sure in the future some applications, at a price around 100-200 dollars, see? Don't just condemn a new piece of technology. Help make it better.
its really cool but its damn slow......... u cant read well with this.........why not go for laptops with some more money into it with so many more features and lcd screen that doesnt strain ur eye much......... the reader is good but like all other readers.......its slow....so time consuming....... more of electromania than gaining knowledge.......
There's nothing "bad for your eyes" about reading books or looking at computer screens. Extended use can cause eye strain, but it's in no way permanent. That's a myth.
with this, one no longer has to go to the library! secondly, why not put hundereds of books into one! one could practically carry around an entire library! haha this reader combined with torrents = free books forever lol
They also destroy your back (did you go through university?). Not to mention they cost more (digital = much lower production costs). You can get them instantly, etc. The list is endless.
Can anyone tell me more about the accessability to books, papers and so on? I's a nice device, but its usefull ness depends on what you can charge on it.
It can read PDF and Word documents. So if your book, paper or document is in those formats, the yes. Plus it's got access to Google Books and Sony's own ebook store.
PDF and Word been the most popular ebook and document formats there are AFAIK.
My main concern with these e-readers is that they're only useful (now) for consuming content. I'd love to see this sony reader with a note-taking program like OneNote (obviously a 'lite' version).
Also, another awesome dream feature would be the ability to connect this to a laptop via USB as a "second display". Then, you could send a document (eg. word doc, excel spreadsheet, webpage, etc.) to the e-reader for display, while using your laptop's main screen as normal to type and do whatever.

The trouble with Sony and companies like them is that they constantly rip off the general public world wide with ridiculous prices for a product that's not worth the money they ask. No E-reader should cost more than 200 bucks maxium. Sony you're a disgrace to the common man and woman who want a fair deal at a fair price. Don't buy into their rip off prices.
Yea, it's expensive, but e-paper and e-readers are relatively new technology. Besides, it's basically the same price as the Kindle. In 2-3 years, i expect e-readers and other similiar devices will be more common and cheap.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OVER PRICED!!! and would benefit by having a colour screen and proper backlight! I'll wait until Sony or some other big rip off company gets the 'reader' right and sells it at a sensible price for ALL!!!
back lighting? it's e-paper (e-ink). it doesn't work with back lighting, and is completely different from an LCD display. Which is why it's easier on the eyes than an LCD display, and works well even in sunlight.
Furthermore, e-paper is relatively new technology, and there's a premium to be paid for that. Color? That'll be MUCH more expensive.
it`s possible, but if you think this is expensive, don´t check the colour displays 's prices
PD: totally agree with you, i 'm also wating for the prices to lower down, but it's been a year since i first heard of this kind of readers, and as you already noticed they are still too expensive
Great Review. Ad Apedcen, it's adjusting. it uses this thing calleb e-ink to make it more paperlike so as to not hurt your eyes, so it's got to adjust after a page.
it's e -ink, curret flows and orients some kind of "carbon capsules", every capsule has a black and a white side, every side comes with a transmiter which can be activated to display the black or white color, they turn black because they are restarting the whole system
Sony PRS-505, its the upgrade of the PRS-500. The 700 is not really $200 more, but you can probably get a used PRS505 in the $150-200 range. Sony is offering a $100 discount on purchases of $299 or more if you sign up for a Sony visa card. If you buy the PRS-505 from Sony it will be $299.
Nice, the Kuwait Towers. I've been there a few times. Good review. Not sure if this is worth $200 more than the 505. I think I like this better than the Kindle though.
Thank you for your brilliant and professional review on this fantastic product. (The future has really arrived!)
I watched your video many, many times lol. After reading and watching many reviews all over the web, I think your review was the one that finally decided me between the PRS-505 and the PRS-700.
Great Video... I've been on the fence with choosing an e-book reader for my collection of PDF's. The 505 was a great looking device but the zoom features you demonstrated sold me on the device. I spent some time in the SonyStyle store looking at this and the glare was a bit difficult to deal with but it seems like a logical choice for viewing PDF's. Thanks
Nice test!!

back lighting? it's e-paper (e-ink). it doesn't work with back lighting, and is completely different from an LCD display. Which is why it's easier on the eyes than an LCD display, and works well even in sunlight.
Furthermore, e-paper is relatively new technology, and there's a premium to be paid for that. Color? That'll be MUCH more expensive.

You can search a word with PRS-700. Can you do the same with PRS-505?

wow...love this reader! It has all the features I would need. The next step could be a colour screen. Is that even possible with e-ink?
A pity it's still so expensive, I think I will wait till the prices go down... :-((

it`s possible, but if you think this is expensive, don´t check the colour displays 's prices
PD: totally agree with you, i 'm also wating for the prices to lower down, but it's been a year since i first heard of this kind of readers, and as you already noticed they are still too expensive

Great Review. Ad Apedcen, it's adjusting. it uses this thing calleb e-ink to make it more paperlike so as to not hurt your eyes, so it's got to adjust after a page.

why this bulshit's screen always blinks to black/negative?
apedcen 2 years ago
it's e -ink, curret flows and orients some kind of "carbon capsules", every capsule has a black and a white side, every side comes with a transmiter which can be activated to display the black or white color, they turn black because they are restarting the whole system

After watching many reviews, this is the first one that covers everything I wanted to know about the reader. Good review, thanks!

Thanks

Is there a way to get one of these if you don't live in US? (I tried Sonystyle and Amazon, but they don't ship to Europe...)
