  • as long as e ink light on the eyes, good battery, and pdf freandly card slot maybe wifi, maybe. font increase yay never thought of that.

  • Zooming into PDF files, YES, I agree that is hugely important.

This is what turned me away from the Kindle, I heard it had lousy PDF support. Though to be fair I hear their latest models have gotten better.

  • i cant find the prs-700 on sony.com,, there is still a 650

  • Excellent review but contrast is nowhere near as good as the kindle.

  • Excellent review

  • can u download books to it free or it costs?

  • He sounds like "Peggy" from the Discover Credit Card commercials. I bet you that's him..

  • I can't wait until they don't have to constantly flash and refresh. Then I'll buy one.

  • Yeah, I'm choosing between prs-700 and prs-600. I don't have any idea what is their difference.

  • How come no one compares the prs 600 with the 700?

  • I vill suk your bludddddd!

  • lol i got this when i typed PRS guitars :P

  • the flashing kind of irritates me

  • 1 e- reader 2 e- reader 3 e- reader...... Wahahahaha!!!!!

  • prefiero un libro real ¬¬

  • fuck...Alan Greenspan??!! Who is reading this shit?? f...ing joke...

  • @LeonProof2007 I'd say that ppl who are interested in the politics of our country would read Alan Greenspan. (Hhhmm.... You're stupid as hell...) The guy is an Arab and appears that he's Kuwaiti. They tend to read more educational books rather than titles such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...

  • VAMPIRE!!!!!!!! :O

  • Thanks for the demonstration!

  • can i read Arabic books with this Sony reader ?

  • How do I upload Audio into this ?! Can someone help me please

  • i found that the best way to get music onto the device, was to either download media go, put your SD card into the computer and then copy your music from there, or you can just drag the selected music into the Reader Library and sync it from there

  • Dude, you sound like pavel chekov from star trek :D

  • you had me at "hello", your voice is over 9000!

  • If it has a build in dictionary and thesaurus or you could buy it that be cool, and would you be able to buy banned books or material, I assume since we are paying for the book files.

  • seriously tho, I hate the flashing when you change pages and so.. it is that what keeps me from buying e-readers

  • Coolest voice ever! I'm buying this shit

  • This is a gorgeous overview. I think this device import the open and free .epub format. I have an anatomy of the file format described in a video. Cut and past on the end of the video address: vvGrFZdSDww

  • How about Kindle or iPad do you think?

I must decide to get Sony reader or Kindle.

  • OMG, and again sony delivers a e-reader with a very reflective screen. They should look at the Onyx Boox or Irex DR800S(G) with wacom screen to see how its done.

  • is there handwriting where you can write notes in books in your own writing or even create your own exercise book

  • cool review

  • I would buy Sony's rather than Kindle!

  • Great review ! Is the screen in colour ? Or is there a reason why its in Black and White ?

  • that screen has awesome response time lol

  • sebs30v:

    Grow up you ignorant ass.

  • best reader

  • so many good feature then kindle

  • Sony always jack other companies ideas

  • kick ass accent

  • If count Dracula advices you to buy PRS-700 you better fucking buy it

  • @Lywald OMG your comment made me LOL

  • @Lywald ahahahahahhahahaha

  • Good review thank's.

    I got the PRS-600.Its cheaper.

No light and and a bit smaller.

But I liked the screen better too, less glare.

  • That's funny yeah..I am staying in Singapore and Sony e-book is not available here at all at Sony or any electronic stores. I wonder how can I obtain this product other then going to the US to obtain one.

  • Awesome review man, thanks :-)

  • people JUST GET THE KINDLE and the backlight hurts more than helps

  • @GuruR97

The Kindle is a technological piece of garbage with unecessary proprietary software implementation. I give props to Sony for realizing readers don't want to be held down by the tyrannical oppresion that is the excuse for DRM management!

  • LotusElise05, that is your own opinion. I own the Sony Reader, and I can tell you taht since my sister owns a kindle I would just arther own the kindle. However that is your opinion and I respect that. However, in my point of view, the reader is just to complicated with its MANY unecesary buttons, and plugpoints

  • Don't like any proprietary device. The Sony reader can handle many formats.

  • best review- I like the night view feature. Thnx.

  • One thing about this system, how much are the books to buy and download? I know it comes with 15 free books, but how much do people have to spend if they want more?

  • look on the net u can get free ones and they are about %80 of shop prices if u pay

  • Will do, thanks for that.

  • @wayneleon100 they are really expensive if you want to buy them from the sony page, BUT the good thing with the sony reader is that you can buy the book from whatever page you want! It reads many different file types.

  • Ah, OK, that is a good thing then, that people have a choice as to where to buy their books from.

  • I am so excited that my husband is buying this for me for the holiday's! I really appreciate the tutorial and review.

  • Kindle bites. No epub support. Amazons book store uses a proprietary format, so if you want to switch to a different eReader, all your kindle books are lost.

Go with the Nook or a Sony.

  • Splendid review ....THANKs

  • can this one read by it self and just listen to it? coz im lazy reading but i wanna have one of this.

    lol

  • is this like reading off a computer screen or is it easier on the eyes

  • computer screen

  • it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay easier on the eyes. =)

  • Thank you for the review. Are there any issues with viewing PDF files at all? Does this thing read other languages well? Are there any problems? I see you showed arabic so I'm assuming there are no issues, but I want to hear it confirmed.

  • I think amazon kindle2 is much better

  • I bet he gets laid a lot because of it. He sounds like Dracula or something.

  • nice review...

will get the prs-600 that is quite similar

  • Where did you buy it from? I desperately need it!

  • Just wait in like three years it will probably have a phone and the ability to browse the internett and a itunes book store thing

  • i want one of these.

the thing is, what about book availability?

amazon has so many. what about for sony?

  • From what I can see from the specs on the sony website, its compatible with msWord, pdf, several ebook formats and text formats. So you can download free (public domain) ebooks from google library or any ebook store and they should work fine.

As far as I can tell you could write your own book in Word and then put it on your reader. On the Kindle (the Amazon reader) you can only get the books from Amazon, which means paying more money overall.

  • شريته مخيس

  • Nice but would be way better if it was colored.

  • The e-Ink technology still has to develop a lot. In about five years you'll have colored readers.

  • Ok just a few questions for those of you who have bought one of these since I intend to get one as a gift for my mother.

is it complex to operate? my mother is not exactly expert in electronic devices

can you hand wright text using the touch screen? just like on normal paper?

are other languages supported (namely greek or russian)?

generally speaking would you recomend one to a fanatic book reader?

  • yes I think so you should buy it to your mother. I've bought one for my mother and she loved it she get used to use in a half of an hour.

it's very easy to use you just have to teach her for 10 minuts and she can do it alone, but I think that you should load the books for her because it could too much for her

  • Nice review, I should get a reader...as I'm always traveling and carrying tons of books is a pain.

  • This will be like the first ipod that ever came out....people thought it was so cool and it was also super expensive. They're going to come out with way better version with better features over the next few years and it will probably be at a much lower price. So I would probably just wait it put to see how people react to the reader and stick to good ol' paper for now :)

  • how much does it drain the battery because of the touch standby mode while displaying a page?

  • Oh damn i want one of them, but they are sold out...im german can anybody tell me when they will be able to buy in germany?

    Thanks!

who finds grammar failures, can have them.

  • You van buy the new one Sony 600,it's better .

You can copy text and past it onto a word document and read it.

  • can you read all kinds of text on this?

my family's gonna buy one for everyone cept my mom

i wanna know if you copy something from the internet can you paste it onto this and read it?

    it would be handy

  • you can copy text into a text editor and save it as a PDF file which the device can read.

  • i just got one,

    the touch edition

they dont really list everything on the instruction manual so for people wanting to find the dictionary double tap a word

    oh

and by the way microsoft word documents dont work on the reader

  • shukurun ya sheikh

  • why does every gadget reviewer have fat fingers?!

  • He stole my video. Sony DSC-S930 plz do something. Report him.

  • Excellent review. Thank you.

  • very good in-depth review.

  • This eBook can be used as a normal PDA on which to take notes and write as on a sheet of paper? Since PDAs are now fairly small screen (3.5 inches is standard) I would like to purchase an electronic PDA similar to the old with the big screen. What can I say? I do not care to use it to read books, but as the agenda? Thanks for your reply! :)

  • I received my device yesterday and I really like it. I couldn't enlarge the Arabic text though.when I click on S, M, L or XL its all the same. Is it the same with you?

  • great review

  • Great review.... I'm thinking of investing my money in this device instead of the PS3.

  • you have an awesome voice D Great review

  • I agree, divine voice!

  • i wont wait for it to improve , i will get one now and get another one if there is an improvement because i need one right now

  • Understand that this is new technology, that is why the price is so high. Consider what we all know about technology, over time, it gets cheaper.

No, a Kindle or Sony Reader is not a wise purchase at this time. However, in the future, since this technology will allow you to carry all your text books, personal books, and I'm sure in the future some applications, at a price around 100-200 dollars, see? Don't just condemn a new piece of technology. Help make it better.

  • not worth the money. not even close

  • Very good review.

  • its really cool but its damn slow......... u cant read well with this.........why not go for laptops with some more money into it with so many more features and lcd screen that doesnt strain ur eye much......... the reader is good but like all other readers.......its slow....so time consuming....... more of electromania than gaining knowledge.......

  • Still not the same as having an actual book in your hands.

  • Its not the same as having an actual book in your hands, its better.

  • Not the same...it's a lot better innit.

  • en el 2015 me compro uno.

  • ive heard this is better for your eyes then actually reading a paper book. is that true or not?

  • There's nothing "bad for your eyes" about reading books or looking at computer screens. Extended use can cause eye strain, but it's in no way permanent. That's a myth.

  • Call me old fashioned but what is wrong with a normal book? They cost less, don't break or use electricity.

  • with this, one no longer has to go to the library! secondly, why not put hundereds of books into one! one could practically carry around an entire library! haha this reader combined with torrents = free books forever lol

  • YOU CANT BUY 283 BOOKS FOR $359

  • you can at a library book sale, but the point is after paying 359 for this you still dont have a book

  • They also destroy your back (did you go through university?). Not to mention they cost more (digital = much lower production costs). You can get them instantly, etc. The list is endless.

  • try carrying 1500 books with you on vacation, lol

    \

  • Welcome to the future my friend.

  • it´s obligatory black & white?

  • Can anyone tell me more about the accessability to books, papers and so on? I's a nice device, but its usefull ness depends on what you can charge on it.

  • txt pdf a plethora of different types of files, also battery lasts 7500 page turns

  • It can read PDF and Word documents. So if your book, paper or document is in those formats, the yes. Plus it's got access to Google Books and Sony's own ebook store.

PDF and Word been the most popular ebook and document formats there are AFAIK.

  • OMG AMAZING ACCENT!

  • My main concern with these e-readers is that they're only useful (now) for consuming content. I'd love to see this sony reader with a note-taking program like OneNote (obviously a 'lite' version).

Also, another awesome dream feature would be the ability to connect this to a laptop via USB as a "second display". Then, you could send a document (eg. word doc, excel spreadsheet, webpage, etc.) to the e-reader for display, while using your laptop's main screen as normal to type and do whatever.

  • looks great! thanks!

  • great review!

  • Excellent video!! I am suscribing right now.

  • Yea, it's expensive, but e-paper and e-readers are relatively new technology. Besides, it's basically the same price as the Kindle. In 2-3 years, i expect e-readers and other similiar devices will be more common and cheap.

  • thanks, Alucard. Actually I've changed my mind, no E-reader should cost more than 100 bucks. It's a total rip off at the moment.

  • back lighting? it's e-paper (e-ink). it doesn't work with back lighting, and is completely different from an LCD display. Which is why it's easier on the eyes than an LCD display, and works well even in sunlight.

Furthermore, e-paper is relatively new technology, and there's a premium to be paid for that. Color? That'll be MUCH more expensive.

  • You can search a word with PRS-700. Can you do the same with PRS-505?

  • wow...love this reader! It has all the features I would need. The next step could be a colour screen. Is that even possible with e-ink?

A pity it's still so expensive, I think I will wait till the prices go down... :-((

  • it`s possible, but if you think this is expensive, don´t check the colour displays 's prices

PD: totally agree with you, i 'm also wating for the prices to lower down, but it's been a year since i first heard of this kind of readers, and as you already noticed they are still too expensive

  • Great Review. Ad Apedcen, it's adjusting. it uses this thing calleb e-ink to make it more paperlike so as to not hurt your eyes, so it's got to adjust after a page.

  • why this bulshit's screen always blinks to black/negative?

  • it's e -ink, curret flows and orients some kind of "carbon capsules", every capsule has a black and a white side, every side comes with a transmiter which can be activated to display the black or white color, they turn black because they are restarting the whole system

  • Sony PRS-505, its the upgrade of the PRS-500. The 700 is not really $200 more, but you can probably get a used PRS505 in the $150-200 range. Sony is offering a $100 discount on purchases of $299 or more if you sign up for a Sony visa card. If you buy the PRS-505 from Sony it will be $299.

  • დიდი ამბავი,მერე რა,შენ სამაგიეროდ ფოტოაპარატი გაქ უკეთესი!

  • მადლობა თანადგომისათვის, ცხოვრების ძალა და ხალისი დამიბრუნე! :))

  • I just bought this :D

  • Great Review! Very nice pointed out details.

must you use pc managment software or will it read any pdf from Memory/SD?

  • Nice, the Kuwait Towers. I've been there a few times. Good review. Not sure if this is worth $200 more than the 505. I think I like this better than the Kindle though.

  • After watching many reviews, this is the first one that covers everything I wanted to know about the reader. Good review, thanks!

  • Thank you for your brilliant and professional review on this fantastic product. (The future has really arrived!)

I watched your video many, many times lol. After reading and watching many reviews all over the web, I think your review was the one that finally decided me between the PRS-505 and the PRS-700.

  • astonishing device! and great review man, thanks! question: what about pdf files, do those work with no problems?

  • Where is my comment? Can this device open pdf files with mathematical equations?

  • if you go on sony website you will read this

Unsecured Text : BBeB, ePub, TXT, RTF, Adobe® PDF10, Microsoft® Word (Conversion to the Reader requires Word installed on your PC)

Great review and thanks for saying the camera you took to record this video.

  • Ok. Great.

  • does this show images also??

  • FFS, if you watched the video you would see that!!!

  • quwwa, could you show in a video how the reader deals with arabic pdf? thanks in advance

  • Thank you for the HD review. :)

  • حسافه يالحبيب ............. مو ملون كنت معتازه حق الكومك وبعد كم شغله ...

المهم شكله عتر الله يهنيك في^^

  • هل يدعم اللغة العربية ؟؟ Do you support the Arabic language?

  • Great Video... I've been on the fence with choosing an e-book reader for my collection of PDF's. The 505 was a great looking device but the zoom features you demonstrated sold me on the device. I spent some time in the SonyStyle store looking at this and the glare was a bit difficult to deal with but it seems like a logical choice for viewing PDF's. Thanks

  • Is there a way to get one of these if you don't live in US? (I tried Sonystyle and Amazon, but they don't ship to Europe...)

  • eBay

  • excelente video, me gusta mucho este producto y pienso comprar uno pronto.

great vid, I really like this product and I'm planning on buying it
