Thanks for this posting (and Phil, of course). My god! I looked like a pro last round! I used this shot twice over sand traps... I birdied twice! I only got 2 birds the whole round but what ever they were fun....Giggity
I can't stand Phil Mickelson when I'm watching him fluke shots in tournament (it's OK, I know they're not really flukes) but you know, he does genuinely seem like a really nice guy. And as travdaddy226 and remmy100 said, he seems really good at explaining these shots too.
@pommyadam you might be standing up in your swing then, try standing up as tall as you can while still having some knee flex, then you wont blade it, atleast that was my problem
also remember to open your stance relative to the amount you lay the club open or you will probably shank it, and keep the ball forward as well. I have tried this technique in competion and its amazing how agressive you can be even on the smallest of shots if your technique is sound and remember we are talking about the high soft lob shot here......thats my take :-)
(cont) hands lead clubface at all times on downswing, brisk action, and most importantly he swings the club towards the hole, no cutting across the ball, this leads to shanks etc, essentially the steep decent into the ball reduces the forward momentum and coupled with the open clubface creates the nice high soft lob shot with plenty of spin if your grooves are clean but the trajectory alone should be enough to place you very close to the hole....
Heres my take on his technique. 1. open stance 2. open club face 3. ball played forwards in stance(left instep area) 4. Weight on front foot throughout swing. 5. more wrists than arms off the ball in the backswing so the club is approaching more vertically into the ball(Hinge). 6. downswing is a "choppy" action steep decent into ball, the key here is impact and beyond( club enters just before ball 1/4" but slides under and through, clubface stays low post impact and faces skywood right through
easier said than done... open the club but where do you really stand ...they don't show you how to stand... open but your club placements and stance is not really explained...
At 1:39 my mind was blown. How do you swing that hard and go UNDER the ball without it even moving?!?!? That was more impressive to me than anything else.
I can't believe how good he is around the green, but yes, risky shots. I guess that's how he can miss the cut one weekend and win the Masters' the next. He truly goes "all or nothing" like no other player... my favorite golfer to watch.
Phil Mickelson is the king of putting a ball on the green and making it stick. That guy is a monster. I've never seen anybody that could put a ball into the air and just have it drop and stay right where it landed.
For those who haven't seen, Phil could have done watching his own video before the 16th at HSBC in 2009. HA! Search "4 worse golf shots els woods mickelson watney 2009 hsbc"
His Video, " Secrets of the Short Game" is a must buy. Watch it, practice his methods for a few weeks and you'll see an insane amount of improvement. It took 4-5 strokes off my handicap in two months.
I love hitting the flop shot - it doesn't always work out well but when it does there's few shots that look as good. And it's rare to see at your normal club so it's got that little extra 'wow' factor :)
I don't see how he has a 60* and can open the face all the way and still have the shaft that straight. When I open the face all the way the face turns to the side and the shaft.
I have the feeling the whole bounce thing is another variable that makes more clubs to be sold in the market. Guess what in 2020 the 1irons are gonna come back!! ;-)
I appreciate how difficult this shot is, but I dont understand when you need it and why Phil Mickleson plays it when he does. Can someone explain it to me? Why doesn't he choose a chip and run shot at the final green example he shows here? Thanks!
@golfguyuk I'm a noob but my guess is that because he's standing at a downhill slope, he's worried that a short chip would land on the slope and run out too far.
@r32adt3db All I said is that i dont like him??? I guess you might be his secret butt lover and tip ur hats together and have the same gay/fake smile all the time???
I thank Phil for his wonderful information video. I can actually almost do this shot, I just don't have a 60° wedge, I have a 55 ° sand wedge, but it's almost just as effective. :)
The flop is an impressive shot if you pull it off. Phil is absolutely correct that it is a low percentage shot. The majority of the time a more conventional approach will produce better results for far more people. It sure is fun to try though.
The term "bounce" is used to describe a specific design of the soles of irons and wedges that is intended to reduce the "drag" of the sole through sand, longer grass or Bermuda grass; or, to reduce the incidence of hitting behind the ball. Dave Pelz has a good 4 pages dedicated to the description in his short game bible (it's a good read). You'll understand why pro's and top amatuer golfers have so many wedges. (Different bounce for different course conditions, grass, types of sand.)
thats why u have to be committed to the shot. u have to hit it hard to get the elevation.u might blade the ball at first but eventually u will get the hang of it. i try to do the flop shot as much as i can cos it looks cool when u can do it right.
ive always been very comfortable hitting a flop shot from rough, considering everyone else finds it one of the hardest shots to hit ive never minded it
but i wouldnt have ever tried it from the fairway through fear of blading it, but this vid has most definately helped!
Wow. With the lake behind and a flop shot from a ball that's settled down in thick grass to a green that slopes away for the win. That's gotta be the most pressure packed situation in golf ever. Maybe if someone said "Make a hole in one, or I tell the sniper to fire." would be worse.
Actually I was doing that a lot today practicing from the rough. But yeah I'd want to avoid doing that in my next tournament. At least it just looks like a practice stroke. :)

bounce is the angle that the leading edge of the club sits off the floor
low bounce is better for tight lies, hard ground etc, high bounce is better for wet lies, soft sand, fluffy fairways etc
