I was expecting to get a large tune-up bill or be told I needed a new lawn mower until I ran across your video. I did not have carb cleaner so I just wiped down the surfaces.....had to go back and clean the surfaces again due to leaks, but now have a lawn mower that runs like new! Thanks!
I have a similar mower. Mine started to rev up and down now,but I noticed about 2 min before it dies due to no gas it runs smooth. Could this be the same issue. never any smoke though.
So the black smoke is a tell tale sign? My mower died several weeks ago and has been put putting for a while like it wants to cut out while running but then kicks in again... it finally died, last night I discovered the spark plug was really black and with lots of gritty black oil, but once I cleaned that it started but then put out a lot of black smoke and died.... same all day today. It'll start but then cranks out a big puff of black smoke and dies. Thanks
@Ruberduky99 I replaced the diaphragm today, cleaned it off with the carb cleaner, and it ran awesome for like 3-4 minnutes then the revving started and the black smoke started and it was done again! Lasted a whole 5 minutes. Any other ideas?
@ryzer349 i replaced the diaphragm and gasket. now it runs like a new mower. i also bought a new blade, filter, and muffler. it now only takes two tanks to cut my grass as before it took 3. the diaphragm kit was about $6 at small engine shop.
My piece of crap lawn mower runs again! My wife shrugs her shoulders and asks when willl I be done with the yard now... Dude, you are a GOD. One hand carb repair holding a camcorder...too friggin awesome. Thanks for the post. My better half may not be impressed, but in my book you rock big time.
Thanks! Guess what I get to do tomorrow?! My mower shows all the signs of a bad diaphragm. Fouled plug from too much fuel, black smoke. Starts fine, but then loses power after a moment.
@TheDirtbiker712 From what I saw in the video, it looked like the diaphragm had a little dent on it that fit right into the mount, the gasket was completely flat.
@TheRealKdub59 Same problem here, exactly. Do we need a new diaphram? Mine started with this problem ever since I tilted it on it's side to clean out the blade and deck. I'm using twice as much gas too.
i replaced mine and it is still doing it i double checked it and everything looks right but right before the tank runs out of gas it starts to run right. any ideas?
Great video. I'm sure this is the repair my mower needed, except when I got it back together it wouldn't start. Has a new spark plug. Any suggestions?

@TANK5134 sometimes the smoke is present, but really faint. I would still replace the diaphragm because its a small investment, and i will bet thats the problem.
@BAJANCHAMELEON don`t listen to him you can replace the primer bulb!! it just takes a flat head screwdriver!!!pry the old bulb out gently with out scratching the sides where it goes and place the new bulb in placeand lightly tap it securly back into place with the flat head screwdriver without scratching the sides or puncturing the new bulb.it is so easy and way cheaper!

I'm from the UK and found your video extremely helpful. I nearly had to pay around £80 - $130 to get it fixed. Just ordered the little kit which should arrive tomorrow.
What a great Video. Changed my carb with ease thanks to this and now the mower sounds better than it ever has done! Also meant I didn't have to take it to the repair shop so saved some cash there too. Cheers, Cambridge UK
Really liked this video. Just changed my carb and now its running better than it ever has! Saved me a bundle too as I didn't have to take it to the repair shop! Cheers. Cambridge UK
Thanks for a brilliant video - there is a garden lawn in Oxfordshire looking fantastic thanks to your great advice. 9 minutes with one hand, unbelievable!
I found the original parts cost around £5-£6 in the UK, although there are a lot of ebay sellers offerring a pattern part for £1.50 delivered!
This video is great. I work in the auto parts world but no nothing when it comes to small engine. Just a small side note, I work at O'Reilly Auto Parts and we keep the diaphragm kit on the shelf for $1.99. Thanks for the video Craig.
@MunkyDog2026 your welcome, and thanks for the sincere comment. Even though i rebuilt a Briggs engine back in high school i dont consider myself a professional small engine mechanic, so dont feel bad. I just know the basic diagnosis of troublesome running small engines. Most mowers that i fixed, and resold only needed 5 dollars in repairs. Its good to know that O' Reilly has the part for cheaper. Thanks for the info! A thin coat of Vaseline prolongs diaphragm life i later found out.
@gbsk12 i have not done this type of repair in awhile, but yes i would coat both sides. Place diaphragm on a piece of cardboard when applying a thin coat of Vaseline to both sides. Also grease up the spring a tiny bit.
Thanks Craig...after Googling and looking at a lot of articles I luckily ran across your vid...I smiled when I saw it was the exact configuration of a g'friends mower that she was ready to throw out because it would run for 2 seconds and stop. I guess mine have been more expensive models because I wasn't familiar with the diaphragm...I'll tackle the gas line trimmers next! Thanks!

Thanks!!! My mower will start and run for about ten seconds, the slowly die. I've already tried a new spark plug, filter, and changed the oil with no luck. I'm going to get the new diaphragm and gasket to see if this will fix it, thanks for the post, perfect instructions.
you saved me a hell of a lot of money and made me get off my lazy ass and do it myself this was fun thanx! the diaphragm only costs 5 bucks. i learned DO NOT LET YOUR MOWER SIT IN THE RAIN! it will rot the diaphragm.
I've been looking for the info in this video! Thanks a lot!
I laughed out loud when you were holding the camera with one hand, the tank and carb with your foot, and trying to unscrew the carb with the other hand! You need a camera man!!
Great Video. Kudos on holding a camera and fixing the mower all at the same time! Thats exactly the repair I have to do. Thanks for saving me a couple of hundred bucks in a repair shop.
Good video! Thanks for putting it up! Now I know how to replace the diaphragm in my mower, it don't need to be replaced yet but helpful for the day it does need to be replaced.
Ok guys. i am back. opened up the carb again and this time i cleaned 4 holes in jet with thin copper wire. intalled everything back again and bang,,,,, mower is back to normal. Thanks craig for diaghramgm instruction.
Hi craig. Very helpful video. But i am not able to get my lawn mower going even after changing the Diagphgram. As long as i keep priming, mower works but the moment i stop priming it dies. so do i have to change the carb?
My mower was revin up and down but was not smoking to bad an could not figure out what was wrong . I was looking all over the internet and asking question at different sites. Then I thought youtube and came across your vid. I never took apart a lawnmower before and thanks to you I now know how to , well at least how to change the diaphram on it. Now it's on to the Chain Saw and then the gass trimmer. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP , I can now go out in the blistering florida heat and mow the yard again.
Great video. I have a B&S 3.5 that was reving up & down. It died while cutting grass. I hope this fixes my problem. I thought B&S was reliable. Thanks!
my mower used to do that I didn't evean replace the diaghram, i just took it off and cleaned it with some carb cleaner and re assembled, it fucked up on me a few times, but after the third time it didn't do it again, piece of shit plastic carbs I hate them!!!!!!
thanks man for the video i just had diaphram replaced along with bulb ran me 85 bucks used the lawm mower 3 times on our small lawn it is doing it again , you prime it it runs for a few seconds and dies its a briggs just like in your video im taking it apart in the morning and giving it a shot, thanks again
Coat the new diaphragm with a coat of vaseline when reinstalling. After i made the video a small engine mechanic gave me that tip. The vaseline prolongs the life of the diaphragm.
thanks for the video and your precise instructions. I always had problems with the carburator and had it fixed twice. Now I had the same problems again and already thought I had to buy a new mower as all the repairs would be too expensive in the long term.
Now thanks to your video I could repair the mower myself and it is running as on the first day again.
If the diaphragm fails again coat the new one with a thin coat of Vaseline when reinstalling. A small engine mechanic gave me that tip after the video was made.
Thanks for the video, I was getting ready to take the mower to a repair place because it was revving up and down, then it would turn off after a few minutes of mowing. Did everything in the video and now it mows like new. Funny thing: Me being a woman, when I went to the parts place to buy the diaphragm, the clerk automatically assumed that someone else was making the installation. He said "tell him to place the paper on the tank and then the gasket on top" Great video, Thanks again!
Considering that a woman did the repair i find that to be super awesome, and a turn on! No offense please! If the diaphragm fails again put a thin coat of Vaseline on it before installation. A small engine mechanic recently gave me that tip after the video was made. The Vaseline keeps the diaphragm flexable, and prolongs the life of it. Your welcome, congratulations on your repair, and i wish you the best of luck! Craig
I followed your video instructions - changed the diaphragm without problem. The mower starts first time & runs as sweet as a nut ! Brilliant - I got a good as new mower for GBP4 ! Thanks
Great video. My mother had the classic symptoms of a bad diaphragm - I owe my life to that fact! ROTFLOL (I don't think the young guys will get that joke.)
I replaced the diaphragm and gasket and it worked beautifully. Thank you for the video

New bulb has new clip that slides into bulb and snaps in carb.
Snap it in and then put on the old outer plastic ring.

TimODon87 1 year ago
I had a cracked accelerator pump diaphragm on the Ford 1bbl carb.
Turns out the diaphragm should be viton to withstand the newer fuel chemicals.
Does ethanol harm non - viton seals?
Are B&S diaphragms made of viton?
Or am I on the wrong track?
Anyway most auto carbs don't recommend vaseline on the diaphragm.
Is this not true?

What a great Video. Changed my carb with ease thanks to this and now the mower sounds better than it ever has done! Also meant I didn't have to take it to the repair shop so saved some cash there too. Cheers, Cambridge UK

Thanks again for a great video - you rock!

@craig1974
Craig Nice video. Do you put the Vaseline on both sides of the diaphram?
Thanks
gbsk12 1 year ago

Problem solved! Thanks for saving me $100+ for a new mower.

you saved me a hell of a lot of money and made me get off my lazy ass and do it myself this was fun thanx! the diaphragm only costs 5 bucks. i learned DO NOT LET YOUR MOWER SIT IN THE RAIN! it will rot the diaphragm.

I've been looking for the info in this video! Thanks a lot!
I laughed out loud when you were holding the camera with one hand, the tank and carb with your foot, and trying to unscrew the carb with the other hand! You need a camera man!!
Thanks again!

Great Video. Kudos on holding a camera and fixing the mower all at the same time! Thats exactly the repair I have to do. Thanks for saving me a couple of hundred bucks in a repair shop.

Thanks!

Coat the new diaphragm with a coat of vaseline when reinstalling. After i made the video a small engine mechanic gave me that tip. The vaseline prolongs the life of the diaphragm.
craig1974 2 years ago
Hi Craig,
thanks for the video and your precise instructions. I always had problems with the carburator and had it fixed twice. Now I had the same problems again and already thought I had to buy a new mower as all the repairs would be too expensive in the long term.
Now thanks to your video I could repair the mower myself and it is running as on the first day again.
Many thanks from Austria, Europe. Wolfgang.

If the diaphragm fails again coat the new one with a thin coat of Vaseline when reinstalling. A small engine mechanic gave me that tip after the video was made.

Thanks for the video.
Now purring like a kitten.

He said "tell him to place the paper on the tank and then the gasket on top" Great video, Thanks again!
patg0218 2 years ago

Thanks

It only does it a few seconds after a cold start which is acceptable. Otherwise the engine runs great.

Any ways good job!

Great video. My mother had the classic symptoms of a bad diaphragm - I owe my life to that fact! ROTFLOL (I don't think the young guys will get that joke.)

Thanks Craig, I 'll have to remember that for future repairs on my mower I bought last year, as it is the steal tank with plastic carb.

UPDATE: I just learned from a power equipment mechanic to thin coat the diaphragm with Vaseline before installation which prolongs the life.
craig1974 2 years ago
Thats good to know, thanks .I'm gonna remeber that.
JASONS1PLACE 2 years ago
In a way it makes sense. The Vaseline keeps the diaphragm more flexable.
