Just wondering here. Im planning on getting a portrait of Guan Yin tattoo on my back. I' am Chinese, raised as a Buddhist, and whenever I've always been in doubt, I've always made my prayers to Guan Yin for mercy. Anybody know if it's considered bad luck or shameful if I was to get a tattoo of Guan Yin? My reason to get one is just that I want to honour her (no different than having a statue of her on my altar) and I want to feel closer to her.
Speaking from a different Buddhist traditional perspective to have a tattoo of a Buddha/Boddhisatwa would tend to be considered unbuddhist because of what Siddharta preached about idols, but on the other hand if it's done for the right reasons (which it sounds like it is) and it is done well then it should be perfectally fine.
I'm not sure, but I think it really depends on how you interpret it yourself. Some may say if you do get a tattoo of Guanyin behind you and you do habits not acceptable by Buddhists (ie: drink alcohol, steal, criticize others) then you are reflecting that to Guanyin.

limyangyang, *you* need to understand this fact: "Class" is something attributed to a language by people & is politically determined--it is NOT a quality inherent to ANY language. Yours is an argument that's used by the power-elite all over the world against minorities. It's called "language subjugation"--claiming yours is the only legitimate language to conquer/weaken another group's culture. Also, why should you care what people speak if it has nothing to do with you?

Cantonese is Great Modern Language, with Great Songs; whereas
Hakka is LOW-CLASS language with UGLY songs that sounds like SHIT!!
No wonder Cantonese Language become MAINSTREAM int'l Chinese language like Mandarin & Taiwanese.
Hakka language will FOREVER be sidelined even by Hakkas; as a language of uneducated peasants or hill-tribes peoples call "Guests or Kejia"
SINCE MAJORITY OF HAKKA CAME FROM GUANGDONG, THEY SHOULD ASSIMILATE & SPEAK CANTONESE INSTEAD.
