  • those poor, poor drums...

  • i love these guys but their instrumental abilities are equivalent to a band of five year olds with a.d.d.

  • @beaneroopie Umm, that's the whole point.

  • Whats with all changes since I was aware?

  • this is the first song I heard by AnCo...and I'm so glad..this song kicks ass

  • this song gives me good vibes

  • Imagine a normal person just passing this concert while walking on the sidewalk. Imagine how much "WTF" would be in their system.

    I love this song.

  • lol dave makes some crazy faces

  • Great performance...wish these guys would come to St Louis

  • how about accept what is?

  • i just feel like ripping my face off when he yells. its so good.

  • it's unreal how much i love this band..

  • Idont get what that songwriting comment means theyre lyrics are usually pretty deep and abstract/visual which leaves room for interpretation.

  • I'm so happy Deakin's back again! They're great live as a trio, but it's a whole nother level with all four of them.

  • don't get me wrong but this song is just absolutely spectacular!!!!!! everyone criticizing Animal Collective and saying what and how they should change about their music please be quiet... it's music they have created, it's their game, once you change one aspect of it (someone saying they should focus more on songwriting, less on atmosphere) it's not their absolute music. leave it as it is - perfect

  • ...maybe he should have adapted the song into a more easily performed version. - or maybe even this is the wrong performance of Grass to be on YouTube.

  • Thumb me down, but sometimes I can't stand Avey live, he doesn't hit his notes. All you hipsters will justify it, saying it's about the soundscapes, or an unpolished sound, or about the building up of a song from ground up - bullshit. The studio version would have this off-key melody if they wanted it too, Avey missed some of his notes, mainly at the beginning, I loved the chorus yell, and even the later verses, but damn verse one, I think he may have had trouble transitioning from previous song

  • @kblavie hahahahaha the whole time i was reading this I was thinking "Holy shit! My friend litterally told me the same thing" whats going down Kyle?

  • @imjohnandyouare Stole it from a blog

  • @kblavie He has a very high, difficult range to belt out rants for 5 minutes straight in an almost painful voice to sing in. If you go to a show to hear the song how it sounds on the album, just stay home and listen to the CD. But I guess that's bullshit hipster talk and all things have to sound a certain way.

  • @grf0492 I still disagree, composing a setlist is vital to a musician's success, and if the artist feels that he can't produce a quality performance as a result of fatigue - either play the song first, or don't play it at all. And I actually support your statement about staying home and listening to the CD if you want to hear an exact replica, a live performance should be adapted to the performer's talents - while playing live. Obviously Avey Tare is having problems hitting these notes

  • @kblavie Take into consideration that they're making these shows out to be a collective of animals, thus the name. It's not so much about musicality as it is about having a great time with other animals and basking in human beings' ability to transfer emotional energy, because that's what art comes down to at it's most primitive state, and that's why only humans can make art, so take it or leave it. But I sympathize with your standpoint, I was trained classically as it seems you were too.

  • @grf0492 I gotta say, I once again agree with you, even if such a stance contradicts my previous opinion. I embrace the immersion in music, and the personal aspects of live performances, and as you say "basking in human beings ability to transfer emotional energy", i also respect your stance as a musician, as I am also classically trained as you say.

  • @grf0492 ONLY HUMANS CAN CREATE ART!?!?!?!?!?! havent you ever heard a goddamn bird sing?? thats art motherfucker. have you ever heard wind blow through trees??? or waves crashing on a beach thats all art. you are a fool

  • @imjohnandyouare Well, you have to take into account that the concept of appreciating a moment in time and space as a work of art is exclusive to the human brain's superior processing capability. Birds' singing is a sub-conscious reaction to a visual stimulus to impress mates or ward off predators, not simply for the satisfaction of creating sound concealed in time, in other words music, because they cannot process that emotion. Basically, humans define what art is from their surroundings.

  • need to see them with the deakster

  • Best performance of Grass. Because the AC' songs are hard to play live (for the trolls who want the same thing on albums), so here's a good live.

  • @TheIndustrialism They're hard to play live because they have to sing really loud.

  • Fuck MGMT Animal Collective is 10000x better!

  • @kelwfoolPJ Or maybe it's possible to just enjoy both bands? Fuck hipster elitism.

  • @kelwfoolPJ You're so stereotypical.

  • this is a really cool performance

  • 3:04 omg

  • 1:32 OH MY GOD DFUYGSDHIKIHDS DEAD

  • what's panda saying @ 2:45?

    hahahahaha!

  • @aesrp he's singing the song.

  • brilliant melodies packed on with amazing and abstract layers of atmospheric trippy sound

  • I've been off drugs for the last 5 years bc of Animal Collective..they're all the high i need

  • come to canada please

  • smoke weed errday

  • @FuckCommis smoke weed every meal

  • animal collective has the wost fans.

  • this is fucking sick

  • you push me down into the grain...where'd that go? or i just cant hear it i guess... :/

  • soooo dope

  • 1:33 <3

  • bagatellamusic, are you joking? please say you're joking.

that was one of the most idiotic things i've ever read in my life.

  • i like their live music just as much as i enjoy their studio work.

  • Sad to hear that theyve comepletely gone over your head Baga

  • hahahahahahah Geo at 0:10

  • the reason the bit at about 2.30 sounds so thin is because all the backing vocals and stuff are missing.

  • This is why feels is so fucking good, the live versions of the songs are better than the studios.

  • Creativity, for the win.

  • it's deakin!

  • They Are Fantastic!

  • sorta reminds me of arcade fire in the beginning when the vox come in.

  • 3:39

    LOL

  • brian licks the side of his beer bottle in the beginning.

  • wow, I didn't know Panda bear shredded the guitars so hard. thats sick

  • @jcskater89

panda bear is the drummer. the guitarist/lead singer is avey tare and the other guitarist is deakin

  • they got better live. with the fall be kind hd vids.

  • @VcookiemonsterV fall be kind hd vids?! where can i find them?!

  • then they are really good

  • I know I know

  • it sounds like your reverse-contradicting yourself. make up you mind.

  • im only saying they are too good to be described with words.

  • @mlpayne89 maybe thats the only reason YOU liked them... anyways if they're too good, they can't suck, right?

  • than thats how good they are that they dont need to be good!!!

  • @Bagatellamusic "They should put less effort into sound design and atmosphere" no way

  • @schmitty3 that IS their sound writing. the sounds are the song dummy. and they have real strong melodies in simple harmonic and rythmic context thats what i call good effort on songwriting

  • @Bagatellamusic "a bit more into song writing" are you not hearing the vocal melodies? Theyre fucking infectious! What I love about AnCo is that they manage to merge the atmospherics with poppy beats and melodies seamlessly.

  • Put less effort into sound design!? That would result in a band that is not animal collective

  • @Bagatellamusic The concept of Animal Collective IS to put more effort into sound design and atmosphere. It doesn't hurt that, in my opinion, they also "write" some amazing songs.

  • @cronoyuha1

Exactly! they're a visual band in everything they do. No wonder they're making a visual album!--I was surprised to find out how surreal this music really is, because on the surface they don't seem so daring. And you're right, David and Noah aren't slouches when it comes to writing.

  • @Bagatellamusic just turn the bass up, and equalize your setup. this is brilliance man!

  • @Bagatellamusic i think that's absolutely wrong. sorry. songs like in the flowers or Daffy Duck and banshee beat would be so different without the amazing soundscapes and atmosphere that make them what they are.

  • @Bagatellamusic your problem is you just dont see there sound design and atmosphere as song writing, just cause they're not like everbody else and dont go about writing songs the same way as others, doesnt mean they're not writing songs

  • @Bagatellamusic I really disagree about what you say about where they put their efforts in their music. I feel like they write really brilliant songs, they are just really different from what everything else out there sounds like which is why you might think badly of it. They manage to maintain their songwriting as well as their beautiful, intricately textured sonic atmospheres.

  • @Bagatellamusic shutup man

  • @Bagatellamusic What do you mean by the concept of Animal Collective?

  • @Bagatellamusic I think I replied to this comment before a long time ago, and just came back to this video and read it again. I still can't get over what a fuckin' idiot you are for saying that.

  • @mlpayne89 Either you like them or you don't,(even if it is ;;Brainwash)Simple as that

  • @mlpayne89

i am liking this whole conversation. i have a strange feeling. like i know i don't like this. but i like it so much. and it has rooted deeply in parts of brain that i dont think i can change. poor branes. my poor branes....

  • this sound is so unique. Its hard to give it a name. It leaves you feeling strange and inspired at the same time. Really cool!

  • i saw animal collective at lollapalooza, and i was truly blown away

  • i think i saw you there

  • Is it just me or do most of their songs sound waaaaaaaaay better live?

  • these malta festival performances are great but the coachella ones were really off.

This one of my favorite songs!

  • What kind of mixer is Geologist using here? I know he uses Mackie now but this almost looks like a Behringer

  • the deakin guitar solo is pretty aweeoms

  • What guitar solo?

  • 2:29 - 3:09. that verse...deakin's playing just sounds like, tinny and weak compared to the band's dynamic on like every other song.

  • Noah banging on those drums makes me SO happy!

  • thats PANDA to you!
